I think Low Winter Sun was bleak just for the sake of being bleak. I watched maybe an episode or two after Walking Dead, and it just felt dead. Everyone felt forced, and looked like they were created just to fit the world.

True Detective is heavy because of the subject matter. Only guy that is on the fringe is Rust. Everyone else is normal (well, as normal you can get in the heart of rural Louisiana). Nothing look forced to me.

I understand that McConaughey's words are not necessarily the personal views of the writer - that Pizzolatto isn't using the show as a soap box by which to spout out his own obnoxious beliefs (he's no Ryan Murphy). The problem (well, one of them) that I have is that the writing for that character feels too...um...obvious? Maybe transparent is the word I'm looking for? Every time he opens his mouth and spouts out one of those dreadful monologues, it feels as though the writers are shouting to us "Look at all the crazy things this guy believes in! See how he's just so damn complex and disturbed?! Isn't this gripping and edgy television?! BE FASCINATED BY THIS FASCINATING CHARACTER!!" It just rings false to me.
Eh. I don't know how you can see it that way when after each of those monologues they've got the foil character ridiculing him, which would undermine any such intentions.

I find this show legitimately frightening. I was watching it last night and couldn't stop thinking about being dosed with acid, shot up with meth and then tortured endlessly. The acting is great and the growing sense of dread is extraordinary. This show is amazing. Detective dramas are the most played out overdone television genre there is but everything about this feels fresh to me. Its just super fuckin' eery. I haven't been frightened by anything in a long while, but the universe this show depicts is the most horrifying thing imaginable.

I've also been wanting a Woody Harrelson and Matthew M. buddy cop movie for like a decade now. Ever since I was in highschool. I always imagined it being a comedy but this is fine too.

- Deadline: ‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto Signs New Overall Deal With HBO, Paving Way For Season 2 Of Breakout Drama
When HBO landed eight-episode drama True Detective in a bidding war two years ago, the pay cable network signed an overall deal with the project’s creator, novelist Nic Pizzolatto. The bet paid off, with the series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson garnering critical praise and solid ratings. Now HBO has inked a new two-year overall deal with Pizzolatto, who is working on a second season of True Detective. I hear he is currently preparing a draft to present to HBO executives who are fully expected to proceed with a Season 2 given the performance of the first installment whose premiere was HBO’s most watched series debut in more than three years and has garnered 7.7 million viewers to date on various platforms. This marks a very fast rise for Pizzolatto who only left academia, where he taught fiction and literature, to pursue writing full-time in 2010 and had only one TV credit, a staff writer job on AMC’s The Killing, before writing True Detective on spec.

Idris playing duel roles? I can get behind this.

Season 2:

Omar from the Wire and Phoebe from Friends team up to hunt that an unlikely murder suspects... in a kinter garden in fucking Florida.

But just went the duo thought it couldn't get any worse, the discover the killer might actually be themselves... from the past

Loved this bit:

the anthology series will keep a duo of detective characters at the center going forward, narrating the story. “If we got to do it again, the setting would be a major character, along with our leads,” with the show set in a place “you wouldn’t normally set a television show,” Pizzolatto said at TCA earlier this month. “I tried to make the format as broad for my tastes as possible in the sense that this is almost the True Detective version of a buddy‑cop movie hunting for a serial killer. And there could be a season that’s much more of a widespread conspiracy thriller, a season that’s a small‑town murder mystery, a season where nobody is murdered and it’s a master criminal versus a rogue detective or something.

Someone pay this man. And get him a god damn production crew. ASAP

The best part: no chance of a season 2 and 5 about less interesting white people.

If you'd told me that Woody and Matt were in a crime series/film and told me nothing else about True Detective, I'd assume it's a comedy as well.

Since Edward Norton seems to be doing fuck all in his career I hope he signs on for Season 2.

I am still amazed that Mcconaughey is doing a tv show. The dude is in the Bale/Dicaprio/Phoenix tier and is doing television. Crazy.

I find television to be better than film nowadays. This is basically like a long, epic film anyway.

Hopefully some actors can use this as a platform to jumpstart their careers if they feel like they are in a rut or not getting the roles they want.

Will Smith could be great in something like this.

I think you can make a joke of dialogue or lyrics or whatever in any medium if that is your intention

Profound.

Preach.

I get sick of this complain so much. If the person isn't into the show or music they find everything about it corny, stupid, or bad.

I think the performances are carrying the show so far, especially MM's, however i'm not super impressed with the rest.
But i want to see where it all pans out before making assumptions.

So far i think it's shaping up to be a series better enjoyed in one single marathon, rather than weekly.

Keep Will Smith away from this one. He'd probably force the crew to cast one of his kids in it.

But yeah, some typecast actors could/should gravitate towards this if they want to do something massively different (assuming they aren't typecast as gruff detectives).

Obviously I meant that if he is doing TV, the show creators would be the ones with the leverage and he would only be using this as a spring board. No way he would be able to convince them to cast his kids into something like this.

Might be just me but I think when given the right material and motivated he is a phenomenal actor and I would love to see him in a show like this.

I think about this show ever fucking day. Damn, it's good.

Also, if Idris Elba signed for Season 2, I think GAF would explode.

Someone like Ryan Reynolds could do well in a show like this.

Also, Michael K. Williams would be fun to see since Boardwalk is over next season.

You know what... that is a great idea. I would not mind Ryan Reynolds in this if they can mine the same kind of gold out of him that they did with Matt. Enough with the DOA blockbusters, give him a shot with something different.

I want Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels starring in True Detective same year as Dumb & Dumber To comes out, both channeling the great dramatic work they have each done, no joke.

Sorry for the dumb question: does that mean the show, going forward, will have its own independent story arcs per each season, bringing in a new cast of characters?

I wonder if the other series will have an overarching type of motif or theme....

Since this is Lovecraftian in many ways, if we'll see it play out like a Call of Cthulhu type thing where you witness seemingly unrelated events, that are linked by a similar cult or symbolism.

I think that could be amazing if they had that in mind for a 3-4 season run of this show.
