(RUMOR) Xbox One GPU reserve getting smaller soon, down from 10% to 2%

Snap was always pretty pointless anyway. As is Kinect in general in my opinion. I'd rather the extra 8% extra graphical boost over snap tbh. But can't help think they might be giving away one of their unique features to bump up specs and after all is said and done, still be a long way off their competition in terms of performance.

I was doing something on the dashboard and wanted to see what I could snap.
When I clicked "More Options" - I turned off the console now, so forgive me if that's wrong - the options of Apps and Games come up. Marvel was the only game under that category.

I find it hard to believe snap would become an option as it's one of the best features of the Xbox One. Despite me having more games on my PS4 I find myself using my Xbox One way more because I can watch something through my Apple TV snapped to the side (such as NHL games) while playing Dead Rising. Yesterday I was even snapping and switching between the Rangers outdoor game and watching Netflix during the commercial/intermission breaks. I'd probably even consider buying some multiplats on Xbox One because of this.

Instead I think the smarter way to handle it is just make the games snap aware if they aren't already so that they can use extra power when not in snap, but when in snap they can also drop the resolution down from 1080p to whatever it is in the snapped mode instead of just downscaling.

It must be due to pressure from developers
Respawn?

Time to start a new one like this?

There is no other reason for a category called "snappable" to exist. I can't think of one at least.

I searched and found the store page for Lego Marvel does indeed mention that it is "snappable":

Well crap. Snap was the coolest thing about the Xbox One in my opinion. I hope the snap part isn't true. People that only want the best graphics are going to get a PS4 anyway, and it doesn't seem like 8% of gpu would change that.

MS really dropped the Ball with this One.
I mean PS4 was announced before anyone knew there will be an X1.

When those gentlemen sat down and watched the PS4 reveal, Didn't they know that this will happen?

They could just have delayed the announcement( at that time none of us knew when it was gonna launch) And have a 6 months buffer zone to get better and release on MARS with better specs ,Hardware and software.

So from a dev point of view Kinect is no longer free.

Bye bye Kinect.

Perhaps MS is finally seeing that neither gamers nor developers have any interest in the thing?

Ah, rumors like this remind me of the pre-launch days of these consoles. Good times.

Anyway, if this snap rumor is true, I have a feeling a lot of consumers will feel ripped off. They'll try to snap a game to perhaps be welcomed to a message popup that says "Sorry, but this game is not snappable. Try something else."

If snap becomes optional then its a good thing that Windows gets the sdk for Kinect because clearly the Xbone isnt gonna be truly pushing any of its applications in a significant way.

Still holding out for Oculus Rift + Novint Falcon + Kinect + that treadmill thing all at the same time

Two things:

1) Six months is not enough time to change specs, which would have been already finalized by the time the PS4 was revealed.

2) Microsoft thought they had the position of power. In fact, they did. Coming off the success of the 360, it was their game to lose and they lost it. It wasn't so much that the PS4 played their cards right to beat them, though they did (and brilliantly, I might add). What caused Microsoft to stumble was their own arrogance and total misreading of consumer reaction to their policies.

MS is responding quickly at least. I can't help but think that Mattrick MS wouldn't have let this happen. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I wonder if tomorrow's announcement/s will shed any light on this front. Maybe a non-snappable Titanfall beta is coming?

if this option thing is true then devs will choose if a game performs better or its snapable?then wouldnt they always want performance over snap? seems weird as an option.

If snap is optional, then it is dead. Surely most devs will go for the extra power, and you'll quickly hit a critical mass where snap is the exception rather than the rule. Seems a bit premature without ever letting snap get its legs.

But how could it use 8% GPU just to run apps? The overlay/snap part wouldn't - that'd be a tiny fraction. So it must be available for the apps themselves. Seems a lot for decoding video.

Is it really an improvement when you basically remove a feature you spent way too much time touting as something that sets your machine apart from the competition?

Now I can't snap video walkthroughs from Machinma.
Gotta have that 60fps Titanfall. I'm all for it if this is what it takes.

Make Snap optional is stupid because it basically kills one of the few selling points of the Xbox One. Most devs, who try to make a AAA title, will opt for better performance hence makign the Xbox One closer and closer to a shittier and more expensive PS4.

Why would you kill one of your few selling points?

The way I see it, Cerney was given a budget, but over all, pretty much free reign over the development of the ps4....

The xbox one on the other hand, engineers were given a budget, then told that Kinect had to be in the box, told it had to multitask, and told whatever else, etc etc. Basically be a jack of all trades, master of none.

Making snap optional. Which seems to be a feature that many people who bought the Xbone want more than graphics performance.

i doubt titanfall had issues with that,it doesnt look demanding.

Well on the bright side, the types of games I would most likely use snap with are the ones that are pure gameplay. It's hard to be immersed in an immersive game with a different video and sound being overlayed. And typically the gameplay oriented non-immersive games are 2D indie joints that would easily be kept snappable.

I just want to keep all those cool kinect voice commands (motion recognition has been useless so far), a smoth UI and snap. I'd take those instead of better resolution or more framerate anytime.
It is kinda sad that, instead of incentivating developers to use the unique features if the console, they go with this.

he said fps

And FPS is directly tied with resolution because the higher the resolution, the more power you need to push the same FPS as a lower resolution.

If Titanfall is actually 720P, then obviously it is either technically demanding, the Xbox One is too weak, or Respawn are awful developers. The only reason to lower the resolution to 720P is if higher resolutions are too strenuous to maintain a high and stable framerate.

exactly,720 is low so 60 should be achieveable.now if it was 1080 that is understandable.

Except you forget the fact that they might STILL have frame rate problems at 720P. Hence why they're asking Microsoft to increase the amount of power available to devs.

Infinity Ward apparently asked Microsoft to do this. And they're running COD at 720P@60FPS. Obviously they're having technical issues maintaining a rock solid frame rate on the Xbox One.

Making snap optional for 3rd party publishers? Yikes. That can't be good for Microsoft if it happens, as that's one of the most talked about features for Xbox One.

Less 3rd party publishers will wind up using the feature, as they'll most likely want more performance out of their games.
