I think it was a couple of nights according to the other guys in the station? What was it, three days or something? Just gonna assume he was sleeping in the car. Marty is a real piece of work.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if "three days in a row" meant he was legit off the grid for 3 days or if he just came to work in the same clothes for 3 days

Soooo, does anyone else feel that
Rust's monologue about not receiving closure is describing how the end of the season is gonna play out
?

I don't see how, Marty mentioned in an earlier episode that they ended up working some 7 years together? It's the same reason I don't think they will be making a mess of the case(at least not publicly), they wouldn't keep Rust around with that winning personality unless he made the department look good in the end.

How many more episodes until the story catches up and we're in the present(2012) day entirely? I think two sounds like it fits, maybe even one.

Did anyone else get the feeling that something bad happens to Marty's wife? After the sex scene reverts to present day he looked pretty broken up after talking about it.I mean, I guess the writing is on the wall for that relationship and he had "a" wedding ring on in the interview. Maybe someone else just ends up mowing her lawn...

He doesn't have his wedding ring on, he has a college ring or something. I made the same mistake earlier in the season. Didn't get a vibe that anything happens to her other than divorce (which I imagine is related to his eventual split with Rust)

They just got divorced. Shit's going bad, and in the scene that you're talking about, they make of point of showing him touching the spot on his hand where the ring used to be. Other people had picked up on it previously, but I think this was the first time they were really overt about the ring being missing. I doubt they would go this far without mentioning her death if that was the case, but divorce? I could see that subject being avoided or glazed over.

I know Bryan Cranston is gonna win for the emmy this year (as he should), but Matthew McConaughey is equally deserving of a win.

This is the best acting he's ever done. Seriously, he is just brilliant. I'm in awe.

Wait, isn't it a different year, BB 2013 vs TD 2014? Or do they not go by chronological years, I don't really pay attention to awards shows...

They really needed a better title. It didn't deter me at all, but I've told friends to watch this, and a lot of people have meh reaction to a show called "True Detective". Sounds like just another cop show.

The problem with giving it a more specific name is that future seasons will have different characters and storylines, and probably even take place in different areas.

No, it's this year. Breaking Bad's final season in the fall of 2013 will have nominations for the 2014 emmys.

The Emmy period begins/ends at end of May. So season 5B Breaking Bad is eligible for the next Emmys, as will this, but this will probably be in the mini-series category.

I assume it's like that for the traditional fall through spring network TV schedule.

This show. So fucking good. Damn you, Superbowl.

Also, Marty is a fucking full-of-shit psycho. Jeez Louise. And cheating on Michelle Monaghan. That ought to be a crime.

I haven't watched anything with Matthew Mcconaughey besides this in years, but he's incredible in this. Is there any work of his I should check out? I always had him pegged as a shitty romance comedy guy.

Mud
Killer Joe
Lincoln Lawyer
A Time to Kill
Magic Mike
Dallas Buyers Club
Probably Interstellar

Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing during the credits?

It must be part of the original score, it's definitely not any of the licensed songs HBO lists on its site right now.

I'd go with 3 days in the same clothes. That's the only thing that makes sense.

So it's pretty much certain that Rust accidentally killed his own daughter right? Something to do with his house being near a bend. Daughter was probably on the street/driveway and he didn't see her in time because of the curve.

Hadn't even thought of that. You're probably right.

I wonder if Rust ends up mentoring drug abusers in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Just saw this lol

great in Mud and Killer Joe.

dude was always a good actor. As early as Time to Kill. it's just this stint of shitty rom com dramas made everybody forget about him.

i think he's our gen's paul newman.

I still feel like I'm looking at a Where's Waldo painting when trying to figure out what you're all seeing in that screengrab. I see sticks; Do I need to go back and watch it in motion again?

It appears to be one of those weird stick teepee things they found at the crime scene and in the shed.

I saw Paul Newman comparasion thrown around when he started out acting and then the comparison died when he started his stint in romcoms. I haven't seen much of his early work but he was good in Lone Star and at the time the comparison was apt.

Oh just a much bigger one? It's blurry so it's hard to tell. The guy with the gas mask and machete in his underpants drew all of my attention when I watched so I missed it.

It doesn't seem bigger, just real close in the foreground.

Wow, he's really that great in all that? I've only heard of Magic Mike, and Dallas Buyers Club. I'll start going through that this week.
Yep. Hell, he even pops up in Wolf of Wall Street and does a great job.

I saw Dallas Buyers Club a few weeks ago and it was great. He gives an incredible performance (as does Jared Leto).

I believe Boardwalk Empire could learn a little bit about how to keep people interested while doing a slow burn. This show is really great in that way.

I'm not bothered by what Boardwalk Empire does, but I believe that this show will do a better job of keeping people interested. They both have extended story arcs that require you to pay attention intensely for a long time. But, truly, I enjoy watching the characters more in this show.
True Detective and Boardwalk Empire are at completely opposite ends of the spectrum in that the former has two major characters with one or the other being in literally every scene, while the latter has a massive cast and multiple interlinking parts. Boardwalk simply cannot afford to develop its characters as True Detective has because it has too many storylines to build and too many people to cover.

They are very different beasts. Boardwalk has its strengths, but it does suffer for being so schizophrenic. We get a few minutes of one storyline and then its abandoned for a while, sometimes for an entire episode. True Detective gambles on the dynamic between two people being interesting enough for people to invest in.

“Not everyone wants to sit alone in a room beating off to murder manuals”

You tell him Marty :D

They'll most likely be in different categories. Cranston will go in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. McConaughey will go in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.

Yeah best option really. No way Cranston isn't going to win again (least of all for the finale season) so no point going up against him.

Did not pick up on that at all. Was too transfixed by the nightmare vision walking along the left of the screen.

Watched the promo:
Every time that bald bearded tattooed dude appeared I kept thinking of MM in Reign of Fire.

Also that lawn talk totally has to be a writers callback to this: -

Also 2 weeks goddamn it...

I'd go with 3 days in the same clothes. That's the only thing that makes sense.

I just figured it was the third day in a row he came in hung over looking like a wrack.

Great episode, lots of focus on the characters as pointed out. Really liked the lawn exchange, you just don't mow another guys lawn Rust.

The investigations are finally moving a little bit in a very dull way. Rust's "people are shit, nothing matters in this world, and being alive is miserable" repeating dialogs are annoying me.

Guess the full character study show type is just not for me.

the show is definitely about Rust and Marty rather than the case. Which is a good thing imo.

One thing which episode 3 made really clear (maybe too clear, since some of it was pretty on the nose) is that Hart never got over his own hypocrisy, and continues to lie to himself about who he is just to enjoy a more comfortable life. On the other hand, Cohle is exactly the same person he was 17 years ago, but he doesn't seem any happier for it, and still sees the world as a miserable shithole.

I have to say though, considering how little screen time they have and almost without any lines at all, the two modern day detectives really add a lot to the scenes they do have. Just the little looks they give each other and the reactions they have to what's being said make them really relatable.

What was it that Russ did to the Eunuch church guy in the trailer to make him shit himself? Did he just question him or toss him around a bit? I thought he said he "breached" him or something?

I got the impression he roughed him up a bit.

I'll admit that I found Eli appearing on the show so distracting it totally took me out of those scenes. It was really weird because the moment he showed up, he had the exact same expression he makes on Boardwalk, and it was impossible not to feel his entire speech on stage wasn't some performance Nucky convinced him to put on. The hair just made it more distracting because it looked like Eli wearing a wig or something.

I didn't mind that so much as that he didn't really sell me on being a revival preacher. I've seen a couple in person, and he didn't really have it.
