Microsoft Studios acquires rights to Gears of War franchise/Black Tusk does the work

Interesting news! I wonder what they will do with it?

Keep the classic MP that people enjoy but add a Battlefield style mode. Much larger maps, class play( bits from Horde mode helps) and Vehicles. They need a BF style game that is way OOT and where a headshot feels like a headshot. :D

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a new IP will come eventually. It's just disappointing that Microsoft teased a game announcement and it ends up being in "been there, done that" territory.

So basically MS is locking down IPs everyone's tired of and passing them onto B-teams, freeing the original devs from their bi-annual Halo/Gears shackles and enabling them to instead work on fresh new IPs not exclusive to MS platforms?

Don't know why anyone would be jealous of the MS side in this situation.

As long as the games are great, these milking arguments make no sense. Gears as a series was great, aside from Judgement I guess (I never played it). Gears 1,2 and 3 were very enjoyable games, and I've put many, many hours into the games.

One would think, but I don't know the economics of stuff like this. The fact that Sony has come out with KZ, Uncharted, and Infamous suggests that these projects are so expensive that you can't afford a flop.
 
You forgot halo which has had 8 games since 2001, and Forza with 6 games since 2005.


Halo:CE , Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo Reach, Halo 4, Halo: Spartan Assault. We aren't really counting Halo:CE Anniversary Edition are we? Don't get me started on all the HD remakes we get from Sony, and Spartan Assault is a stretch tbh.

Can't argue with the Forza, they love their Forza.

Actually, I was right. 5 games since 2009. 6 games since 2004. Crazy that there was like a 5 year gap between KZ 1 and 2

Killzone: Liberation came out in 2006. From 2009 they have released KZ2, KZ3, Shadow Fall and Mercenary. That is Four games across three platforms.

Keep it 5 v 5

Return to emphasis on playing as a team and using strats ( ie, focus on Execution and Warzone)

Include Horde, Beast and Overrun

Make it so any CoG can choose any class in Overrun. Also include all Locust beasts or as many as possible

Lancer/ HB, Gnasher, Snub & smoke at start (no loadout bullshit)

Shit loads of CoG and Locust characters and permutations for players to choose from

Shit loads of weapon skins (all unlockable in game or purchasable)

Forget Judgement exists. Do not include any conventions from that game...

...But remove stopping power. No one likes it

Design maps with clear choke points and areas where teams fight for the power weapon (ie Gridlock watch tower)

Keep in mind that Gears is best when there is a focus on CQC/ intimate, seemingly claustrophobic encounters. Big maps and large open areas do not suit the Gears formula at all.

Rifles have a purpose but remember that the Gnasher is the bread and butter of Gears MP

Sawed Off should be pick up only.

Big ass power weapons, such as the mortar should not be in any competitive modes

E3 is where that stuff will be at ;)

If they announced a new IP today by the time of release people would just go oh yeah that game

If it's a new IP I think they need to keep momentum and not a huge gap between reveal and release

i understand the halo sequel because there is enough material in the story to produce them but gears of war ? it was like a zombie trilogy ended , is it necessary to produce sequel and prequel and shit of a ended man vs bug story ?

There are already 4 gears games that do pretty much the same thing, with varying quality. This is a new developer who has to put their stamp on a declining franchise before it ends up Haloing.

They can keep the classic MP with all its boring corridors and Gnasher blasting from 2 foot away, it just needs something a bit more fresh. :P

I call bullshit. I just dug through a 100+ post thread from the PS4 launch special on Spike TV where people were predicting a possible Gears sequel for PS4. This is the closest thing I could find to what you're saying.

Yeah, this seems right to me. The problem Microsoft has is a lack of first-party studios, not first-party IPs. The idea is to buy teams that can make new and great things, not buy names. This seems to show a lack of understanding on Microsoft's part, though I would appreciate an argument from another perspective.
 
Lots of people tossing "reboot" around, does Gears of War really need a reboot? Very skeptical.

Not sure I would say reboot, but I could totally see a game about the Pendulum wars coming out and follwing a new group of Gears, and then following that up with new games about that group fighting against Locusts.

It does. But MS was in the situation of (a) preventing a blockbuster IP from going multiplatform, (b) buying the IP rights outright forever, and (c) cancelling/shelving an unproven IP (Black Tusk project) and replacing it with a very successful IP.

They made the right business decision for sure.

This discussion epitomizes why I was primary a 360 Gamer but ended up playing PS3 last few years of last Gen. I hope this isnt the start of a similar pattern. They could have waited a year maybe before announcing this. Let some new IP flow.

People will compare this to Sonys IP, but gears was hitting a wall creatively, also Sony has lots more 1st party studios with around 2 teams each to bring new IP so can afford to do it, providing creativity/interest hasnt died on them.

-This is part of the reason I chose to go with PS4 to start this gen, bored with the same regurgitation from MS. Although there is plenty of time for new IP, im sure we all just want to see more signs of it.

I want some top exclusive games from MS that will entice me to buy the X1, I just cant justify it atm, New IP/Open more game studios and continue with no DRM/Kinnect and I am in. Black Tusk has alot to live up to, following 343, Lets see what they can do.

If it's a new IP I think they need to keep momentum and not a huge gap between reveal and release and right now Titan fall is that IP that needs momentum

This is terrible news, they should have kept Black Tusk working the game they were working on since 2012 and formed a new studio to work exclusively on Gears. It's not like they can't afford to set up a new studio or that there's a shortage of talent.

To kill any opportunity a studio has to grow or develop new IPs for something that's long since lost it's lustre is just short sighted and stupid.

That would make sense. Introducing new IP's at the beginning of a console launch is dangerous with the budgets games have these days.

Well there are cetain maps (I wanna say a couple of the DLC maps from 3, along with Sandbar (?) that are pretty big/vast, but at the same time it keeps that claustrophobic feel to Gears. I would say instead of expanding out the levels, making them layered (2-3 floors) would make the variety a bit better.

Sawed Off needs more than just being pick up, but at the same time there should be a second option for the Shotgun list. I've always thought an Locust-themed shotgun would be neat.

Make Team Deathmatch a player match only mode. TDM has no place in Ranked. I prefer Execution over Warzone.

Otherwise yeah this sounds just about right.

I think Black Tusk are going to end up a very big multi IP studio. They keep saying they're only talking about Gears today but what the studio said to me was interesting. They have moved all Big Park and MS Victoria's game development (Big Park still doing TV apps I think) into Black Tusk, I would bet long the plans is for a massive multi IP studio, I'm just not sure how short term they will work out with the new IP

Basically, do not include anything from Gears 2 or J expect for smooth cover mechanics and the elimination of stopping power. Overrun needs to be beefed up. SOS can rot in Hell. Basically, give us a smooth, bug, glitch and lag free Gears 1 without bullshit. Black Tusk, you'll make a lot of people happy.

Do not listen to motherfuckers who want Gears to be like CoD, Halo or Uncharted. Those are the people who will rent the game, buy it used, get it on sale months later or stop playing after a week. Gears fans have had enough. Just give us what we've wanted since 2006 and all will be good

I get Microsoft getting the Gears franchise to make it their own, I just wish they would let Black Tusk finish whatever they were working on before having them go full steam ahead with Gears.

Such a shame. Was hoping for a new IP from Microsoft's Black Tusk studio.

I guess I can write off another studio I was looking forward to making exciting Xbox exclusives.
 
Agreed 100%. One of the reasons I left Xbox was from burnout on both gears and halo. Buying this IP on a downtrend seems like a bad play, but we'll see what they do with it.


Have to admit, this doesn't excite me. I thought GoW was started to get a bit tired in the second installment and it was wrapped up okay in the third and that was it for me with regards to the series. Then Judgment came along and was just dreadful and forgettable.

Hardly surprising that Epic have decided to cash in on an IP that they've made their money out of already and like many others probably didn't see much more of a future in it. Seems like an odd investment from Microsoft really.
