Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

You guys think smash alone makes the Wii u worth it? I've contemplated selling mine as it's literally the only game I'm really looking forward to. And I could always play smash on 3ds...

I bought the console because I'm a total sucker for Smash. Suppose if you really don't care about any other single game for it, you could sell yours now, then buy another on the cheap once Smash releases.

I bought the Wii for Brawl.

I'll be buying the WiiU for Smash U.

Playing Smash on the 3DS is not going to be anywhere near the same experience as it is on the console. Simple ergonomics there. My family bought a Gamecube just for Melee, twice. Holding onto the Wii U is no big deal. In fact, Nintendo's lack of games is doing me a favor. I get to hold onto more of my money.

Smash Bros. is one of those series you play for years, definitely worth owning a console for. Can't really do local multiplayer with the 3DS version without much hassle.

Smash Bros. for Wii U will improve your QoL.

ffs your gonna sell it, then a game is gonna get announced for it, your gonna regret selling it when you could just put it in your closet or something, this isnt our decision.

I kind of wonder if they're going to convince Sakurai to do something with the gamepad now.
I doubt it. Nintendo's vague comments today about increasing GamePad awareness seems more like a bid to assuage investor concern it's a failed product, while they prep their new quality-of-life third pillar and then quietly shelve the GamePad in favor of a pad-less SKU.

But... who knows.

I feel like the unrealistic dream of the pad-less SKU died today and you people should probably just accept it.

I don't necessarily want a pad-less SKU, but I didn't see much to underscore they're going to keep focusing on it, other than the absence of any concrete details on a replacement. But I admittedly haven't gone over all of the materials, so feel free to fill me in. (That's sincere, not snarky.)

Yeah, I still see it going that way. I mean the next big title does nothing with the gamepad, and in two months Mario Kart which doesn't either really. They will probably release a couple of small games made for the gamepad and then put it away.

So, yeah, I don't see Smash using it in any way either. There's nothing I can think of that would lend itself well to the gameplay anyway, so that's for the best.

iwata said that the gamaepad has gotten alot of positive feedback, it really is kinda true of people saying they dont want it or that its useless or whatever never touched a wiiU, or if they did it was probably not more than 10 mins and are in the minority.

Smash will probably use the pad, but not in any meaningful or essential way. You can probably play it just as well with the Pro Controller. But Sakurai, being the completionist he is, and wanting to utilize the new hardware (if his thorough use of the 3DS was any indication), will probably put something down there... like the aforementioned NFC functionality (the slideshow did mention a desire to better utilize NFC), or perhaps the usual data display for running statistics, etc (what you'd typically see at the end, but in real-time as it happens).

After today, gamepad-less SKU ain't happening.

Iwata is happy selling 30k Wii Us a month, losing money on each console sold, and selling maybe 12 million Wii Us when it's all said and done, and that's optimistic.

Shoehorning Gamepad functinality into games that don't need it would be ridiculous and just piss people off. Under the current strategy, they're better off green lighting gamepad centric games similar to Nintendo Land, Zombi U and Game & Wario
which will sell fuck all
alongside the already announced games that have next to no gamepad functionality (Smash, Kart, X, Bayo 2)

I don't think that a single game is worth buying a system for. Especially if you have a 3DS already. If there's nothing else you would be interested in, just stick with the 3DS version. If you end up liking Smash 4 a LOT more than anticipated, you always can buy a Wii U then, and perhaps then there's been game releases/announcements that would make you more interested into the console.

Personally, there's a ton of games on Wii U I'm looking forward to playing (Wonderful 101, the 2 Mario games, MK8 and DK, most importantly right now).

I don't think that's fair to say, and you have no proof. I've owned the Wii U since near launch and I don't find the value in it.

RIght, when I say not used, I mean in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure it will have some kind of image on the second screen or something.

If that's the way forward, my friends and I will happily take a Nintendo Land 2!

I kind of wonder if they're going to convince Sakurai to do something with the gamepad now.

Sakurai seems to be focused on leveraging the inter-compatibility between both titles more than anything else (even though we have no clue what that entails). It will probably have some kind of dedicated Gamepad mode and that will be the extent of the use.

Collectable trophies!

It fucking baffles me that they haven't gone through with that. Maybe they will, but I doubt it. I know I'd buy way more trophies than I should...

Also, Pokemon Skylanders. It seems so simple. Instead, there is almost nothing that is compatible with the Wii U's NFC. Unbelievable.

Please note minority I know there are people who own it who dont like it, some of them are the loudest ones.
Oh oh, this is turning into one of those threads I usually don't enter.

I dont enter them either

I was hoping the 3DS Version would utilize the AR Cards like Uprising did. Be pretty cool, especially if they twisted it into an actual card game.

I hope we learn more about the KI Stage tonight, speaking of which.

I was kind of wondering this afternoon how mad Anthony was going to be when they didn't announce a Gamepad-less SKU.

lol I ain't even mad

I bought the thing for $350 on launch day! I like the gamepad. I just don't understand how they're going forward with it from a business standpoint, considering how much of a failure it is, how much it's costing them, AND how little they seem to be supporting it going forward. None of the major games they've announce really take advantage of it in any meaningful way.

Instead, they'll keep chugging with a $299 overpriced, underpowered console with no games that is trying to sell a gimmick controller that nobody wants... I guess. Sounds like a great strategy!

You want the GamePad recipe for greatness?

LEGO NINTENDO

It even rhymes. Think about it:

Build your own Mario levels... your own Zelda dungeons... snapping them together with Lego blocks on the GamePad touchscreen... Then share them with others... Play them with the series' signature sense of humor.

Parallel to the game, Lego releases Nintendo-themed Lego sets with special NFC-enabled blocks. Build creations in real-life and then use the GamePad's NFC to unlock the content in-game, Skylanders-style.

Run commercials on Saturday morning cartoon blocks. Legos! Mario! Zelda! Pokémon! In real-life! In the game! Like Skylanders!

They already worked with the Lego brand on Lego City Undercover. C'mon, Nintendo...

I just see a lot of bashing those who don't care for the gamepad, so trying to quell those by saying they are a minority doesn't sit well with me. I don't call people out for liking the thing, or say that they don't know what they are talking about.

If this controller can really bring innovation, it should have some sort of major functionality in at least one of the three heavy hitters coming this year, which includes Smash Bros.

All I'm saying is, if it has value in games, put up or shut up. Show me the value, Nintendo.

Edit: That's the last thing I'm saying about it in this thread, sorry for the off topic.

I kind of wonder if they're going to convince Sakurai to do something with the gamepad now.

The most that should be done is a Master Hand mode where you're in charge of screwing with the stage, item drops, or can even alter large areas of the map in realtime while the four players on screen do their thing.

I would have suggested a 5 player mode but that seems like a weird number for the series somehow.

Well I had a fun couple hours.

Yeah, the conference call lent itself to a lot of hilarity.

Man, I want Sakurai to bring Mewtwo back. The time is right -- with Mega X and Mega Y, and starring roles in the most recent movie and the next one, he's the most relevant he's been since Gen 1.
