Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

So, it's still kind of weird to me that SSB4 is a thing and that we've seen as much of it as we have. I've been mythologizing a new Smash Bros. ever since Brawl came out, and the reality of its existence still hasn't hit me. I don't know if it's because people are down on Nintendo right now or because of the absence of a Dojo-esque hype generator, but the game seems really low profile and under the radar. After spending the last five years speculating and fantasizing, I suppose I've set my expectations unrealistically high — but even then, Smash Bros. is my favorite series, and so I'm confused by my own apathy. Is it because I'm older and less excited about stuff in general? I don't know.

If you went through this 2-3 times before, like I have, then you're probably feeling less excited about this game because you know to check your expectations. From seeing gameplay trailers of smash 64 on IGN, to seeing the intro trailer for smash melee, to the brawl reveal at e3 2006, my mind rand absolutely wild with the possibilities. Each time i've been a bit disappointed (though not much!), so i've learned to curb my expectations and just be happy with what they give us :) Smash bros will never have everything you want it to, it'll never have every character you want, it'll never have every feature you want, so just accept it for what it is and calm your hype :)

It's cause Ridley hasn't been announced yet.

I don't know how old you are but I'm pretty old too as well. After Super Smash Bros Brawl got released, so I don't really ever thought of Smash 4 until they revealed Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS during E3 2011. That's when I started to thinking and discussing about Smash 4. What I did is that I already set myself with a very low expectation with Smash Wii U and 3DS, and I have a family, friends and Gaffers to talking about Smash 4 and getting hyped with them as well. To see my daughter to get excited with newcomers and veterans made me happy with the fax that I'm going to spend my smash time with my daughter for next few years until she probably would grown out of it. I would like to mention that I'm glad that they dropped Dojo concept, and went with daily images which is way better than Dojo because they don't over-spoiled the surprises and leave it to us to discussing even more. There are 4 possibilities of why you are not hyped for Smash 4.

1. Inner you were disappointed with the fact that you are not getting Dojo
2. Inner you already set up a high expectation for Smash Wii U and 3DS
3. You probably letting Nintendo Negatives affecting you so much
4. You are afraid that it might ended up worse than Brawl

Edited:

Yeah, my expectation bar are so close to zero, so whoever and whatever got in the game, and I will be happy as hell because WE ARE GETTING SMASH 4, along with few interesting newcomers so far.

You can see that that my top 5 have been changed once.

1. Mega Man
2. Animal Crossing Representative
3. Takamaru
4. Palutena
5. Little Mac

Now I got top two, so I updated my top 5 wanted characters

1. Takamaru
2. Palutena
3. Little Mac
4. Pac Man
5. Isaac/Laughing Dog (They are tied for me but I don't really expected them to be in the game.)

Wonder Red with the ability to change to the other main wonders with their weapons for specials would be cool. Maybe a Pokemon Trainer type switch mechanic.

I just have a weird idea where Advance Wars main character would have odd trap and turrent moveset, where it would allow the character to set up a strategic traps and combos. He would able to set up tanks toy and soldiers toy, so they would activate their own attacks when toys reach to the time limit like 5 or 8 seconds. Also they could set up turrent toy to control the space and all that. Yeah, it required strategy minds to make the combo to work, like the game genre itself.

I know it's kinda silly but cool tho.

Personally, I'd rather see the other main Wonderful Ones as their own separate characters than stuffed into a "single" character. Namely Wonder-Blue and Wonder-Pink.

Sakurai will celebrate the cancellation of Pac-Man Museum by revealing Pac-Man.

The next trailer for the game should go like this:

Mario, Link, and Pit are fighting at Palutena's Temple. It's very violent, with lots of structures being destroyed. During the fight, some impact cause the statue of Palutena to be knocked off its base and sent falling below.

Pit, naturally, leaps after it to try and catch it. He's falling quickly, but he just can't keep with it. It's just too far from him. Just when all hope appears to lost, a shine of light appears, and two words are called out:

"UNITE HAND!"
My heart wouldn't be able to take the hype this would induce upon me.

Bask in the hype.

I think it's a combination of things since I can relate. I look at my own list of most wanted characters and feel indifferent about most of their inclusions. We've been speculating for awhile now and I feel that there's not much else to really discuss without more substantial information. There is a lot we do not know about a game that is supposedly being released this year and it's probably all a part of Sakurai's plan. And you're right this game does feel like it's under the radar, even for Nintendo. The Wii U isn't completely dead yet, Nintendo.

Well here's an idea for a question. If you were given the task to reboot the Smash series and its roster with around 30 characters (which includes guest characters and transformations are counted separately. Tag team characters, if they're not at play at the same time count individually. Alts are allowed though (1 alt). who would you include? Forget the original 12, "flavor of the month" choices, etc how would it happen if you were limited to a smaller roster? Which Smash game would it play most like?

You could also make a note of characters you would add if you had time (ala the forbidden ones lol)

Yeah, I think some of us already burnt ourselves out by discussing what we would like to see, and etc from 2011 to 2013. We are still getting more members joining with us on our SmashGAF hype trains on way to release day of SSB4, so it's something for them to discuss when we already went through. Sometime I always found it interesting to see what other people had to bring to the table for discussions.

Please set up a specific number, so I can typing up the list of roster.

Yea having more people is definitely a plus. I'm still not well versed in everything Nintendo so I'm learning some things.

Alright the number will be 25. Can you handle only choosing 25? :0 I'm kidding. I thought it would be interesting so see how people would reconstruct the roster with limits.

Nope, I can't since it will be very difficult for me to get it down to 25 characters since almost all of characters were fantastic in Brawl and SSB4.

Are transformations counted separately? I think Pokémon Trainer deserves to be included, but I'll probably have to exclude him if he eats up three spots.

^ 25 characters or 25 slots?

Would Chrom and Lucina as team count as one since they are not transformation characters.

DS VC confirmed for Wii U! Can't wait for Wario to have a Wii U level based on Wario Master of- no

i just

i just cant complete the joke

I should've though about this a little more... I'll raise the limit to 30 (since I did say guest characters) and transformations are counted separately. Tag team character if they're not at play at the same time count individually. Alts are allowed though.

I'll change the original post.

I'll stick to twenty-five slots:

  1. Mario
  2. Donkey Kong
  3. Link
  4. Samus
  5. Kirby
  6. Pikachu
  7. Yoshi
  8. Wario
  9. Captain Falcon
  10. Ness
  11. Marth
  12. Pit
  13. Olimar
  14. Fox
  15. R.O.B.
  16. Villager
  17. Little Mac

  20. Peach
  21. Bowser
  22. Zelda(/Sheik)
  23. Ganon(dorf)
  24. King Dedede
  25. Mii

These aren't my favorite characters, these are just the most important ones from what I can tell.

I'd be fine if they didn't reveal another newcomer again.

I'm already getting the game, what do I care.

Right. I'm pretty sure that almost all of us are getting the games without knowing any newcomers. Casual members probably need to see what they added as newcomers before buying the game, so there is a need to reveal the newcomers to convince casual players to buy more.

4.Bowser
5.Wario
6.Capt. Syrup
7.Kirby
8.Captain Falcon

23.Lil Mac
24.Mega Man
25.Takamaru
26.Sonic
27.Villager
28.Yoshi (for Amsa)
29.DeDeDe

I should've went with 20!

Should have done something harder like 15 since it is a reboot and we're starting all characters from scratch. Just a little more than the N64 version.

I got choked with 25 characters pretty bad. There are many good characters that I had to cut to make it work for only 25 characters roster. I had to excluded 3rd party characters to make it work for Nintendo.

1. Mario
2. Peach
3. Bowser
4. Link
5. Zelda
6. Ganondorf
7. Pikachu
8. Mewtwo
9. Kirby
10. King Dedede
11. Donkey Kong
12. Samus
13. Fox
14. Ness
15. Captain Falcon
16. Marth
17. R.O.B.
18. Little Mac
19. Ice Climbers
20. Mr. Game and Watch
21. WarioWare's Wario
22. Villager
23. Pit
24. Takamaru
25. Pikmin & Olimar

30, so

1. Mario
2. Peach
3. Bowser
4. Link
5. Zelda
6. Ganondorf
7. Pikachu
8. Pokemon Trainer
9. Mewtwo
10. Kirby
11. King Dedede
12. Donkey Kong
13. Samus
14. Fox
15. Ness
16. Captain Falcon
17. Marth
18. R.O.B.
19. Little Mac
20. Ice Climbers
21. Mr. Game and Watch
22. WarioWare's Wario
23. Villager
24. Pit
25. Takamaru
26. Pikmin & Olimar
27. Wii Fit Trainer
28. Mii

Yeah, I would rather to support more series than padding the roster with filler characters. However LoZ, Mario and Pokemon deserved to have three characters because they are biggest series for Nintendo. It was pretty tough to cutting the characters, and I would love to add Isaac and Laughing Dog but no spaces for them tho.

Woah, Heath you didn't add laughing Dog? much respect.
I added Syrup :( I failed
Yea it was harder than I thought to try to strike a good balance between series/newcomers/veterans. Taking out 3rd parties was good idea.

Should have done something harder like 15 since it is a reboot and we're starting all characters from scratch. Just a little more than the N64 version.

I was thinking that at first lol but man that would be tough but it's possible, Go ahead if you think you can do it. I might try it.
