Best endings to game?

Fear 2 had the best in game climax of all time. As well as an unimaginable twist. On another note beating Mass Effect again not so long ago - that ending really was amazing. Saren was one of the best villains of last generation.

Mass Effect 1 by a country mile. Climbing the Citadel in a Zero-G environment while looking up and seeing Sovereign, all the while tacking on waves of Geth and Krogan, is the best moment of the franchise and probably last gen for me.

Halo 3..."Wake me when you need me."
I get goosebumps every time I hear that.

Bioshock Infinite...The Feels

Spec Ops the Line...WOW
the choices

Halo Reach level The Lone Wolf... So amazing. One final battle against impossible odds on a dying world. The music was perfect too.

Mass Effect 3
...I'm joking lol

Platinum Action games: the thread.

While W101 almost rendered me unable to finish the game due to constant laughter, the ending of Bayonetta holds personal significance for me. Also: Nanomachines, son.

Portal 2, because it's satisfying and provides closure to Chell's story.

It made me happy.

Metal Gear Solid: The Thread. Maybe because i just played 1-4 in a weak and a half.

Seriously though, MGS3 was one of the best endings i've ever seen. Many manly tears...

999

I was going to list a handful of games with great endings...but then I decided to just focus on the one that is heads and shoulders the best videogame ending ever. It’s GOD TIER and honestly in a complete league of its own. If you wanna prove that videogames are capable of fantastic narratives, this is the game to prove it. Absolutely everyone on GAF needs to experience it. I doubt a game will ever surpass the sheer concentrated brilliance of the true ending to 999. Both clever and surprising, it’s quite simply the best plot twist/ending I’ve experienced in any medium. I can’t shower it with enough praise!

Metal Gear Solid 3: Tears man... tears.

Dark Souls (Dark Lord Ending): I went through hell and back to end you Gwyn, your reign is over! Come forth Age of Man!

The Wonderful 101: Protect Earth!

Twilight Princess: Sword duel with Ganondorf!

Funny ending:
The Conduit 2: Yes the game is crap, but I want a sequel just to see that explained. Only if I can play as them though.

I will be the first to say this: I have never been and most probably never will be affected emotionally any harder than when I finished the conclusion of the XENOSAGA series.

Also, Mass Effect 2's suicide mission on Insanity difficulty; truly heart-pounding at the 1st time, especially because I beat it without a guide so I was legitimately worried some of my favorite guys get offed.

999 also held a special place in my heart. As is the conclusion of the original trilogy of Phoenix Wright series.

Super Metroid. More involved and impressive storytelling has happened since, but for endings, this is still my favorite. It's really telling that I first played this only 6 or so years ago, it's not nostalgia tinted glasses.

For modern games, the best I've experienced myself is Portal 2.

Sigh, when I see posts like this, I just want to go buy 999 (and VLR) right now. I was initially turned off by the gameplay as I've never been into those types of games, but... if the story is as good as everyone says it is, I really want to check it out.

Please do. There's a good reason why the game is showered with so much praise and why we get a LTTP thread like every second week. It really is mind blowing. When you know something is as special as this game you just wanna share it.

In my book, nothing beats the Walking Dead season 1. The ending made the game, like it was just decent til then. You can even see that in the reviews, the episodes were getting mediocre reviews, then that last chapter hit and all of a sudden it was 'GOTY'.

Also give a shout out to mgs3 as an old favorite.

Portal 2 and 999.

I can't really go into detail because of spoilers but yeah. Awesome endings and I'm sure many can vouch for this

Tie between 999 and The Last of Us. The latter for maturity and emotional resonance that is rarely found in gaming, the former for being like Lost if everything had been meticulously planned and came together in the end with a perfect fucking bow on top.

Close third goes to Walking Dead s1. Hell, make it a three-way tie. And MGS3 close after that.

Perfect!

Killer7 - Holy twist, awkward sadness and music, Batman.
Okami - Perfect good-feel ending.
Zelda Twilight Princess - Amazing boss fight and credits for what feels like the grandest Zelda adventure. Though I guess most Zelda games have legit endings.

Wonderful 101, Virtue's Last Reward, Chrono Trigger, Hotel Dusk, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Mario 64

1. P4G - Golden Epilogue is just perfect.
2. Valkyria Chronicles -
Such a heartwarming scene at the end when you see Welkin, Alicia and their daughter.

My man. Can't get enough of Valkyria Chronicles' ending as well.

It's so good. Such a satisfying end to a great story. Lots of awesome character development.

Trials and Tribulations. No contest. Just the perfect climax to a phenomenal trilogy.

Also, I love 999 and I think the actual twist of the ending is amazing and one of the best things I've seen in a game story-wise, but as for the actual ending itself as a whole I feel like the writing felt sort botched. They did sort of a second-rate job of explaining like a hundred different things all at once IMO. I had to let it linger and sit in my head for a day.

While I think the game does have some storytelling problems during its run, Red Dead Redemption probably does have the best ending in games. So perfect.

Runner ups for me would be The Last of Us, Mass Effect 1, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears.

Just curious, how hard is getting the true ending? I mean, is it something I would have to use a guide/walkthrough for or no? Even though I almost never use walkthroughs, for a game like that, I'd really be tempted to since I am just after the story (and the gameplay doesn't interest me that much). But I dunno, I'd really just have to give it a go. I tried a browser-based demo of the game once. It was kind of interesting, but hard to tell based on that short demo.

Final Fantasy VI - Because it gives closure to ALL the playable characters you recruited (unlike most other FF endings). And the fact that every one of those characters had a music theme lent itself to one incredible 20-minute medley.

To the Moon - Them feels ;_; The way a certain type of medical sound (
Johnny's heart flatlining
) was incorporated in the music and cutscene was amazing.

If you were at all intrigued by a browser-based demo then I'd say give it a go, the game's story gets literally hundreds of times more gripping as you get to playing it.

You MIGHT have to look at a walkthrough to get true ending but it's not "hard", it's all based on dialogue options lol. I recommend getting every ending except for the one that's just the same thing as the true ending except it cuts off early, though some people think everything but the two main endings are a waste of time.
