Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Pokemon Trainer was always a neat idea, but it just didn't work very well in practice. At all. If he comes back I hope it's with significant changes to how the "team" mechanic works so that it is more functional for a game like Smash Bros.

I did appreciate that hidden "Type Advantage" knock-back that Sakurai sneaked into Pokemon Trainer, even though it made Ivysaur kind of meh due to the overabundance of Fire moves in the game and the lack of Water and Grass moves.

Which in hindsight is funny since lucario should have had the fire issue too.

What if they expand the Pokemon trainer to actually have 6 pokemon this time around?

Give him Red's team from GSC: Charizard, Blastoise, Venasaur, Snorlax, and both Espeon and Lapras (to split the difference between GSC & HGSS and allow Pikachu to remain separate).

I've always thought that it would have been better for Red to fight with his Pokemon, rather than just command the Pokemon from afar. What I mean is something, perhaps, like calling out Pidgeot for his up-special, which would carry him upward as Brave Bird is performed; calling out Diglett/Sandshrew for his down-special, which causes two traveling burrows in either direction that entrap other fighters (Dig); and et cetera... Too lazy/tired to come up with the rest of that potential moveset.

The way Pokemon Trainer is in Brawl just doesn't feel right. It's kind of off-putting to just see Red standing there in the background, especially when he's on some random floating island.

I still personally like the idea of having Pokemon Trainer and Pokemon Trainer Rival. Then there are a starter from each generation split over the 6 spots total, if they keep each at three. Someone else mentioned something similar, but with a male and female trainer instead, which would work too.

I think it would feel weird to see Pokémon Trainer punching Pikachu... or Pikachu directly attacking Pokémon Trainer. Even though Pikachu and other Pokémon can fight humans from other series, it feels wrong to have humans from the Pokémon world directly attacking (and being attacked by) Pokémon.

Lots of pokemon trainer talk tonight, good fun that character is.
Even though I think Sakurai will probably bring everyone back from Brawl, Pokémon Trainer is the one I'm most eager to see him confirm. On the one hand, it's an extremely clever idea and Sakurai no doubt worked really hard on it, but on the other hand, the paranoid side of me worries that something about it might prove complicated for whatever reason this time around. I'm inclined to think he'll come back, but I just want him confirmed already. :)

I'd rather have the Female Trainer be an alternate skin, with her Pokemon's pallets based on their shiny versions.
