Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

The Wii's disk drive is too slow. It's a hardware issue, not a matter of game design. Put the game on an USB drive and play it via USB loader. Voila, back to Melee speed

Not exactly, Melee's is pretty instantaneous. The USB drive still has to load in whoever you're switching to, while in Melee both characters are preloaded.

The load times in Brawl were pretty long. Is it possible they've fixed that with Smash 4, or are games just too big nowadays to expect load times as quick as 64/Melee?

Onett's been banned since MLG days for good reason, this isn't exactly a Brinstar situation

He was vexed by the geometry of the stage more than anything. I mean there are cars sure maybe it's banned for cars and walkoffs I guess, but the layout of the platform and the houses and whatever just was not gelling with him. It seemed to me that he was used to just having free reign over a wide open space where he could maneuver wherever he wanted. Onett kept him contained.

I guess it depends on the disc read speed on WiiU vs Wii.
Personally I'm crazy enough to buy it as a digital download to not worry too much about it. Hopefully this time Sakurai loads all the characters before the match starts so we dont have more of this "wait X secs till Zelda loads" when you do the down b.

The guy probably had some training in the other stages, so when asked to play a serious match in a stage no one uses, he was at a huge disanvatange, as he doesnt play there and dont know how to do it. After all why would he ever play there outside of casual match for fun if no one does.

So is Brawl played via USB drive (or on Dolphin). Maybe your USB drive is too slow? I use an external 3.5 HDD and don't notice any difference between Melee/USB Brawl/Dolphin Brawl.

I remember when I beat a Falco player with Pikachu. He sat there on the floor tears flowing from his eyes "but... but... the matchup advantage..." he weeped.

"What are you talking about?" I ask him. "We all know electric types are super effective against flying!"

It's a difference, but it varies based on a lot of conditions. Melee loads both characters into memory at the start of a match, Brawl loads them on the fly every time. It's faster if you're switching into a mirror matchup too.

Well that was my point from the start, yeah? That we're trained for different kinds of things, and it results in different styles of playing. I personally played on Onett all the time, cause it's fun. But more than anything, cause I liked the music there. Different motivations!

Haha yeah, space animals are beyond useless during a certain part of that stage, even more so with Pikachu abusing Agility to increase the scroll speed of the stage :P

It's faster if you're switching into a mirror matchup too.

Also, if you have their default textures all on your SD Card. (FitZelda/FitSheik00-06)

But my point was that if Smash 4 does the same thing for Zelda/Sheik (doesn't preload them) then switching between them is still going to be slow and awful (making Shielda less viable). Same thing with Pokemon Trainer, as mentioned earlier on.

Also, PT was even worse because his loading times actually varied every time you switch. It's not always the same amount of time.

That's why PT is a flawed character, everything to do with the switching and the other shit tacked onto him don't help either.

The guy should have made clear what stages to play really (or made sure the tournament ran by this rules before joining), whinning about it in the middle of the set is stupid.

Also about onnet, I hate that stage and I'm talinking about on a items on, high rate setting. Too litle space to fight on the houses and if you go to the bottom the walls just stop your kills many times. Plus my friends like to take the fight to the edges for easy kills with a combo which really defeats the purpose of items as they just ignore them :lol. Then again my friends are assholes when it comes to smash, they are willing to get out there and hit you/meteor you again even when you are in a helpless state. And will team up to edge guard someone and this is with items on. Of course just after this they will betray each other and try to get an edgeguard oportunity

uh, Falco doesn't beat Pikachu (we are talking about Brawl here right)
Wouldn't it be more important to ask if both of them were on a sufficiently high level of play for a MU list to actually matter? If not it doesn't really matter if they played Melee or Brawl.

Also, if the Falco player was whining about the MU I'd go ahead and guess they played Melee. If the MU was against Falco he wouldn't have had to flame in the first place :P

come on, what else are you supposed to do in FFAs besides screw each other over!

any time someone trots out a "welfare queen"-type story that sounds fake, I automatically assume they're BSing

Grab items =P
You have no idea, we are playing at the edge and items are just dissapearing cause no one grabs them.

Now that I remmeber, we have not played in months, we really can get free time the same day, last time it was just me who couldnt make it. We were going to try P:M 3.0
and not L cancel a single time. B+ was the best game for us.

Waitwaitwait.

You say you actually DON'T use the sloooow momentum created by repeatedly and unescably hitting someone with a fan to creep towards and then beyond the sidee blast line? For shame man. You miss out on rage and useless button mashing of epic proportions.

Brawl streamed many things directly from the disc instead of having it in the memory.

The 3DS version will most likely have shorter load times than the Wii U version.
I doubt it. I'm sure Mega Man's character art was prepared well in advance.
I doubt it. He was in Ryuji Higurashi's promotional poster for Mega Man, so I imagine he received a list of characters that would be initially shown.

Edit: Beaten.

Good point, but I still would say Bowser was likely the last character to be added to the initial trailer.

Great piece of art though.

I also once won the International Smash Bros Tournament using Pichu and the Donkey Konga bongo controller.

I don't expect him, but Ridley would absolutely be a fun and unique character, and a wholly doable one as numerous fan-made prototypes and mockups have shown.

Really, a purple space dragon would be like a blast of fresh air right now -- so far, every newcomer is or looks human, even if they're stylized (Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Rosalina). Brawl had lots of "creature" newcomers like Dedede, Diddy Kong, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Wolf, etc. Ridley would scratch that itch.

He'd also add another villain to the roster, and give Samus another character to interact with from her own franchise. Ridley's been in Metroid, Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Fusion, Other M. Heck, he even appeared in the CGI commercial for Other M, and Sakurai liked him enough to put him in Melee's intro and as a recurring boss battle in Brawl.

Again, I don't expect him, simply because Sakurai apparently thinks Ridley would be hard to incorporate. But it'd be worth it, given how much it'd please the fanbase, and given how cool the average gamer would think Ridley looks, regardless of whether they know him.

I don't think we need to try and come up with reasons why he shouldn't be in Smash. He absolutely should. But if someone doesn't think he'll be in, they can say so, and leave it at that. The only thing that seems to realistically preclude his appearance is the work involved in realizing him. Otherwise, he's just as valid as the majority of other characters who are Smash Bros. (like Wolf, for starters, with less appearances in a series with less games).

congrats, you couldn't even beat a mediocre Falcon player using one of his worst matchups, AND on a stage that's bad for Falcon for the MU (Final Destination)
.......good job?

Jesus. Just wanted to quote this as means to discourage this unnecessary rudeness.

A bit more on-topic, since I haven't commented on Lucario's reveal yet: I'm glad he's returned, and I never doubted for a second he would be. I don't understand why people are assuming he's meant as Mewtwo's replacement. They play completely different from each other. Sure, their neutral specials are the same, but that has hardly any relevance. Charizard and Bowser share their neutral specials, too. Hell, Samus's neutral special is just another charge shot, even.

Lucario is back, and Mewtwo will come back, too. Sakurai has made too many comments to believe otherwise, especially considering how much attention he pays to his fanbase and how much of a people-pleaser he actually is.

Nothing like coming in on Casuals vs. Competitives XXLVII to make me wonder when people will learn to accept both sides of the story.

...is that a waveshine infinite? Dude should have kept it up until one of the armored vans (best stage hazard) rolled through.

hahah thanks for the read guys - drama is delicious.

And nice to see Lucario back. Now Mewtwo can have the chance to beat the shit out of him after "taking" his spot in Brawl.

Reminds me why I don't like combo'ing in Smash.

The same knee move 3-4 times in a row is too easy and cheap to be a combo.

I don't have much of a problem with it.

I do it too. But the bitching over it being mega nerfed in Brawl is one of the things that make the Smash community pretty annoying.

Some people never get over shit.
