Yeah, that's nice, but probably not so smart to copy/paste Wikipedia for on-going, complex issues and definitely not for uncited figures. Especially ones that involve as much corruption as this.

Have a little read about how those low Wikipedia numbers came about.

One of my favourite quotes:

That is insane. Basically Russian officials knew the central government would never allow Sochi to fail and tarnish the country's (and Putin's) image, so on top of the usual corruption they asked contractors to increase the costs so they could get bigger kickbacks.

Incredible.

OMG the wrong way round toilet seat in that Twitter feed. Someone hold me please, I've never seen anything as hilariously shambolic.

pack it up guys

It's possible that some people are just using this opportunity to post any messed up toilet situation pics they can find and connect it to Sochi. This is the internet after all.

I'm still baffled why people in this thread would collect their shit stained toilet paper in a basket like it's regular trash. Diarrhea garbage day must be the worst.

This thread is amazing.

This is more than likely BUT the fact that there's the possibility of it being true speaks volumes about the proven problems. After all, a guy found a stray dog in his hotel room, and there are stray cats in the unfinished media rooms.

Yeah....no. The Olympics is a world class event yet some of the standards seen here are not only poor, but unsafe.

Accommodation is also a lot like the 'Brown M&M' test - if this is what the rooms are like, what about the rest of the event? Security? Venues? General organisation?

Yea I know, it's just crazy, whiney americans and their drinkable water, right side up toilet seats, finished buildings and clean sheets for the largest international event the world has.

This thread is just so full of entertainment. Oh Russia, you the master troll of nations... xD.

And a tidbit about the place were I'm currently living. Due to my studies and job I've traveled all over Spain, to cities and also remote places (some of them as remote as they get completely isolated for months in winter due to heavy snows), in the north of the country and in the south. I've had to take a dump in many terrible toilets, more than I can remember.

And yet I don't have any recollection of not being allowed to throw my toilet paper in the toilet. Not saying than such phenomena doesn't exist here, but it has to be quite a rare occurrence. In fact, this is the first time I've heard about this happening here in Spain.

Imagining Matt Lauer having to shit right next to Al Roker in one of those dual toilet rooms is giving me the chuckles.

I'm sure that's not happening, but making your average journalist put up with that is a good way to make sure that your Olympics go down as a farce even before they start.

"Please remember, this is our snow. It is a treasure for us all, please, take care of it"

Yeah, forget basic clean water and safe facilities but our snow? Don't you dare fuck with that. We need it to host the Winter Olympics that we bought worked hard to win.

real talk... if the water is dirty and there's awful stuff in it... what's in the snow? Aren't they using the same sources of water to power the snow makers?

WHAT'S IN THE SNOW?!

Never been to Mexico I take it. It's not uncommon for a area's infrastructure to not be able to handle toilet paper in the plumbing.

Staying on the toilet paper thing it is pretty common in London for idiots to throw baby wipes down the toilet that clog up the drains as they are not designed to break down. I suppose the throwing TP into a bin isn't THAT much different to changing a baby's nappy... still gross though. Ah well, shit happens.

I guess they need to vent the fumes somehow

I'm going to ask you to define "pretty common" and "mainland Europe", because I'm sure as shit I've never, ever seen such thing in Western Europe, Greece being the outlier.

I'd drink that swamp water for a gold medal. Sign me up

I just saw a report last night on how cellphones, laptops, etc are beig hacked within minutes of connecting online in Russia. It was crazy impressive. They had some tech guy bring several new laptops (macs, windows, etc) and install some monitoring software. They pretty much expect thousands of stolen identities from this thing. Including from the athletes.

This thread should be the OT for the Winter Games.

Fitting with all the toilet discussion going on.

The contrast between Vancouver 2010 with Sochi 2014 is astronomical.

I will stay tuned for the comedy

The contrast is there obviously but pre-opening ceremony most of the Vancouver press was negative, the weather was bad, no snow, slopes not ready, etc. Then the games got underway and everyone had fun and things ran smoothly. Obviously technical issues can't be compared with open corruption and ugly politics in Sochi, but I do suspect that when the sport starts happening, unless problems affect the athletes' ability to perform directly, people will focus on the excitement of the sports again. Not saying they will forget about the government's bad shit, but that you can keep that in mind and still enjoy the games.

You can say a lot of bad things about IOC but I don't think they'd allow for the sports themselves to not be run smoothly.
