• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Retroid Pocket 6 coming shortly. 5.5 in AMOLED. 1080p / 120 hz. $210.

Vita emulation is not good yet on any device.
Saw some vids that said a (few months old) fork of the vita3k emulator provides good performance and quite a lot of games run on it. Still a long way forward but once the emulatir is mature 8 gen 2 should be sufficient to emulate Vita

If you trust China provided roms and shitly configured emulators. Setting up Android emulators is kind of a pain, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't that bad. But do expect to fuck around the settings a lot, especially for PS2 games.
Oh ok, I'll definitely have a look. How is the console itself? I'd be willing to wait for the Ayaneo Vert, I really want something retro but premium that kicks ass and can play GameCube, PS2, and everything below.

Look at this, the red version https://www.ayaneo.com/product/AYANEO-Pocket-VERT

The only Retroid device is the Retroid Pocket Mini, which is the cursed device with the wonky screen. They sent out replacement screens, but I never did change it because honestly I don't think I'd have been able to pull it off. The thing with Retroid is that they're not terribly reliable and I would strongly recommend against buying any of their hardware at launch. Stick around the community for a couple of months after the RP6 launches to see if there's any issues.

The hardware experience, in how it plays games, is actually very good. Once you set it up with a custom launcher like ES-DE, it's pretty awesome. The Retroid Pocket Mini can play every single GC game I tried at upscaled resolution, PS2 also works like a dream. The 6 will be significantly more powerful so yeah, you'll have no issue whatsoever with anything under Switch that isn't PS3 or 360. Switch games should also generally run very well.

Now, one thing to note about it is the screen size. The Ayaneo Vert looks unbelievable, BUT the screen is not big. The Mini has about the same size and it's definitely not great. Anbernic recently put out a couple of devices with a 4.7" screen. It's 120hz, so Black Frame Insertion is doable, but it's LCD and not OLED. My recomendation would be to wait around a 4:3 screen that's OLED and about that size if you want a 4:3 screen.

So one last thing, I've done a lot of research on these Android handhelds and the one by far that looks like the best bet is the AYN Odin 2 Portal, AYN Thor if you want 2 screens.

It comes loaded ?
The beauty is you find the games you would like to play and download them for free, it's fantastic. When they are fully loaded you get a whole lotta stuff you will never play. Half the fun is creating your own library just for you.

I asked because some of these devices are shipped pre loaded!

I was thinking about grabbing an RP6 as a... "lightweight" Steam machine. I own a Deck, and I love it, but I mostly play small 2D indies on it, playing the big guys on my PC.

But the Deck is kinda huge and portability isn't its strong factor. RPs look way better for that, but I can't really understand how miserable is the "Steam small games through GameHub" experience. Is anyone can give me a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

what is the use case for 120hz if everything the RP6 run are 60fps contents? I am trying to figure out if RP6 is better than G2 overall

Does it even support BFI? Is there a reason why RP6 is running in Android 13 and G2 is android 15?
You don't need BFI support, it's a retroarch feature and works on any 120Hz screen. Anyway, if you're referring to system-wide support, I don't know, but if it doesn't support it, I'll do it using gammaos.

As for the Android version, it's probably because the RP6 chip is older (despite being more powerful), so the most refined drivers will be for Android 13. In any case, it's irrelevant for emulators and games.

It's not miserable at all. You'll be able to play any PC game from the XBOX/PS3 era and even more just fine

RP6 has an 8G2, same as the Odin 2 that I own. I'm playing MGS V Phantom Pain right now on High 720p just fine, locked 30.

Even UE 4 games like FF VII Remake, Crash 4 and many more are perfectly playable. So indies are really easy to run.

I recommend you using Gamehub if you want an user friendly experience, but I much preffer using Winlator. It's more complex but it has much more options.

Incredibly good if you want to play DS and 3DS. But also strong enough to emulate lots of other systems. I have been using more than my Steam Deck since I got it. DS and 3DS library is crazy good.
I am still waiting for updates on my AYN Odin Portal 2. Ordered it a few days back and it seems AYN has been quiet about any shipment updates.

Think I will order AYN Thor if things go well with the Portal 2.

Gonna primarily use the Thor for DS and 3DS. What configuration did you get?
I am thinking 16gb/1TB rainbow. Also, did you get the accessories pack? If so. How's the TPU grip case?

Retroid Pocket 6 buttons are way too small for my hands. Had the same issue with the pocket 5 mini...don't know what I was expecting. I would have liked more space on the sides used for the Dpad and face buttons.

I can deal with the dpad, but the buttons are a mess for me.

I got the base model in black. I wouldn't get the lite because it has a worse processor. And I got the grips but not the whole kit. I would definitely recommend the grips if you have large hands like me.
