Ubisoft has cancelled 6 games, including the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake

The PoP game would have been garbage, nothing has been lost.
I mean it was supposed to just be a remake...

If were at a point where we cant even get a remake of an old game done...that isn't good lol

It's almost as if this current iteration of Ubisofts and Bethesdas of the world cant even face their older titles; because it contradicts everything they do today, and may even create different expectations.

Hence why they basically said "we will keep doing the open world stuff". They just aren't storytellers anymore.

Ok. Someone is worse than Sony and MS. LOL
Anyway, POP Sands Of Time remake looked like shit when it was announced few yeara ago Much worse than a game from 2010. LOL

Game dev is in such a terrible place. Even '$2.3B revenue' Ubisoft can't even re-make one of their own games...
'western' gaming development, yes. excessive/uninhibited industry expansion has resulted in all kinds of unanticipated self-inflicted chaos the last 10+ years. stuff like the covid lockdown & dei have just been frosting on the cake. that ubi's become incapable of remaking one of its own titles is a perfect example of a developer & an industry that, through its own incompetence & neglect, has end up forgetting its own fundamental mission/purpose...

The price was definitely an issue, yeah. Not so sure on marketing: it was the first "world premiere" of Keighley's Summer Games Fest, so people definitely knew it existed.

I think the childish fan-dumb was what really hurt it, from "that's not my prince" to "stop working on this slop and finish the remake," etc. :messenger_weary:
I remember people complaining about the corn rows being woke. Now while the corn rows are pretty stupid for the prince, woke seems like a stretch.

Then again Ubi is learning the hard way that they need to listen to their potential customers at least a little bit.

A real shame we'll likely never get a sequel.

Believe it or not the recent leaked video was even worse than that.

Schreier is saying the game was pretty much complete but Ubisoft doesn't want to release it, it must be incredibly shit.

It'll be a batgirl/concord situation. By not releasing it, and destroying it they'll be able to claim it as a total tax write off. To do so, they must have a had a very good idea that it would be a massive flop if it was to be released and would stand no chance of recouping.

I was told it did great and I was a hater chud bitch.

They won the war after all.

What are the games that were canceled because link is blocked at work.
They only specified that it's PoP remake, a mobile game and four games more.

They announced the closure of two studios: Ubisoft Halifax (mobile gaming studio, who I assume was making the cancelled mobile game) and Ubisoft Stockholm (who was working on a cloud native tech/engine and their first cloud native game, which I assume is one of the cancelled ones).

This means Beyond Good and Evil 2 is finally dead as well?

edit: I guess not. From IGN:
"The previously-established Vantage Studios now encompasses the development of Ubisoft's three biggest brands (Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six) and soon the remaining divisions will take on themed groups that cover the company's remaining franchises.

Creative House 2 will be dedicated to shooters, and look after The Division, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell. Creative House 3 will focus on live experiences, including For Honor, The Crew, Riders Republic, Brawlhalla, and Skull & Bones.

Creative House 4 will feature narrative driven and fantasy-orientated series including Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil (yes, seemingly Beyond Good & Evil 2 still lives). Finally, Creative House 5 will center on family and casual gaming, including Just Dance, Uno, Hasbro, Idle Miner Tycoon, Ketchapp, Hungry Shark, and Invincible: Guarding the Globe."
Beyond Good and Evil 2 surely has to be canceled now, they literally haven't shown jack for that game.

No, the text you're quoting says it continues alive

These motherfuckers also canceled the Splinter Cell remake, aren't they? Ugh, ffs...

This article is click bait.

To be clear, POP was the only title that was cancelled that was announced, the other 5 where unannounced games, mobile, smaller titles etc, 3 of em were new IP

So nothing regarding Splinter Cell remake, or ACIV remake or anything like this

Division 3 is so getting axed down the road, isn't it?

Sad Cat GIF
errr doubt.

What was cancelled was not a massive money maker for this company compared to their recent IPs with AC, Rainbow Six, The Division etc. Some of you put way too much stock in PoP, that is a old IP that isn't doing AC number or The Division numbers, to then worry about The Division 3.

Good job UBI. At one time before covid, their shares were over 100 euros.

Jan 22 (Reuters) - Ubisoft, the French video game publisher behind the "Assassin's Creed" series, on Wednesday announced a sweeping reorganisation and said it would cancel six games, sending its shares to their lowest level in ‌more than a decade on Thursday.

Shares of the "Far Cry" maker fell as much as 35% and were on track ‌for their biggest one-day drop since the company's 1996 listing.

And they try to generate some hype/interest in Division 3 reports.

I hope, if Div 3 does come out, that it is solid, but I don't have any faith.

So the 20 trillion copies that Assassin Yasuke supposedly sold, according to Ubisoft, who then tells journalists to repeat it, didn't save the current model, huh?

In the end, Yasuke was the greatest assassin of all, because he managed to kill Ubisoft itself. Makes me wonder if massive budgets will still be spent on controversial choices.

My spouse is a big AC fan and she thought they cranked out AC's far too often. She hated Mirage and Shadows. The plot was stupid and they were incredibly repetitive/boring. Kinda sad when you see them disappoint a fan who rarely spends money on games.

I've got classic retro Ubisoft stuff and stuff like the original The Division was/is cool. I'd much rather go back to 2008's Prince of Persia. TBH I was never a huge Prince of Persia fan and I've got the PS2 lineup on PC. The latest 2D PoP was ok. Cool concept but the gameplay/aesthetic wasn't my favorite.

Splinter Cell remake won't be coming anytime soon then I guess..again this harken backs to what Konami have done, trying to relive the glory days of the franchise, because we know a NEW splinter cell game releasing is about as remote as a new Deus Ex, same as a new Metal Gear spin off, let alone a new MGS 6 is unlikely

You've lost nothing. Install Sands of Time today, add one patch for widescreen and a couple of other basic modern conveniences, crank all of its settings to max and have a great time. It'll run perfectly on basically anything at this stage and you wont cross paths with any of what Ubi would almost certainly have shoehorned into this remake. No DLC, no microtransactions, no changing the story for "modern audiences".

It's still a near perfect game and has aged very well.

It's likely that several of these projects were designed and produced in the heyday of wokism and they realized that it would be suicide to release them in the current political climate.

This one is a full blown Neogaf W-W-W-W-W-W-Worldwide Exclusive

One night when i was walking in the streets of my east parisian neighborhood, up to no good, ready to start making trouble in my neighborhood, something caught my eye.

Evidently i chanced upon the back of Ubisoft secret headquarters, where they put all their cancelled IPs (please don't mind the mess), and i can say confidently that the next remake for the studio is Life of Black Tiger, as evidenced by the huge "Life of Ubi" sign in the back.

Now don't go telling that to those dirty leakers from twitter please it is a Neogaf exclusive and no one else but us must know.

Share price, when you're a company with little in the way of tangible assets, is largely a bet on future profitability. When I last read their results, prior to the re-org and giving off IP to the JV with Tencent, they weren't all that bad. They made a loss, but their cash position was OK, the cost savings were kicking in and the usual IPs were bringing in reasonable revenue, Rainbow 6 Siege surprisingly so - why everyone wants that GAAS pie, unfortunately.

Their problem is that these money generating IPs won't keep going for ever. They're failing to create the next generation - Watch dogs is gone, Division is on its final warning, the Crew is in and out, and the less said about XDefiant and Skull and Bones the better.

They're failing to monetise their backlog of IP with new installments - Prince of Persia now up to three recent failures for a example. They can't even buy in IP as the recent Star Wars and Avatar games demonstrated.

So if you can't create new IP that resonates, can't delve into your back catalog, and can't profit from licenced IP what do you do when the likes of Far Cry and AC inevitably whither on the vine? That's what would spook me as an investor.

yeah.. I know. That's why I added it.

Apparently this was the Ubisoft India (Mumbai and Pune) dev team...

There's a lot of scammers when it comes to India outsourcing. We recently interviewed someone there that was clearly being told what to say and was just rambling.

When I tested him on anything specific, he wouldn't be familiar. They're basically given scripts for interviews at this point.

My sis in laws cousin is in tech and a big issue in hiring overseas people is that those scripts you talked about may not be what any of us would think of as a script (a piece of paper with canned answers).

He says a bunch of these people use AI to answer questions during online interviews. He'd ask a question and the guy would pause and be looking off screen at something (no doubt his laptop) before giving an answer.

But he said the benefit about these people (even if they suck) is that they'll work our eastern time zone hours and he said they cost (I think he said) 1/4 or 1/5 the salary of someone local. So even if the new hire isnt good, they at least got a warm body in the seat to do something.

The remake looked crap.

Ubisoft just needs to get back to making great Tom Clancy style games with a bigger focus on story narrative and I'll love to see the Division 3 get back to a snowy New York with graphics that exceed the graphics in the game's original trailer, and for vehicles and parts of the scenery to be fully destructible

Those are135 working for Ubisoft India, it's obviously not the entire Indian studio.

BTW It's just sad to see how western companies promote DEI all over the world.

If game studios have so much time and money to spend on employees, they should probably spend it on improving their game making skills and marketing skills than diversity training.

UBI has a way of wasting too much money on too many people, being overbudget, suspect quality, and not even knowing how to market their games. For example, Xdefiant was first marketed with that cheesy montage logo like it's Fortnite. Then they did a 180 and changed the fonts and art to be a more gritty military shooter showing a single soldier. It's still the same game, but two totally different artwork giving different messages. They cant even figure out what kind of vibe they want Xdefiant to be.

I don't know how I'm just finding out about this now, been a bit busy with other thing, but damn I was looking forward to the POP remake.

I can't imagine that kind of callousness toward a bunch of people that poured their creativity into a project for years, and I'm saying this as someone who's rooting for studios with shit politics to fail. Any decent person in charge would at least give those people the option to bring the game into Early Access and see if they can salvage something from it, but nope. If these sociopaths smell even a loss of one cent in giving their workers a break they would rather pull the plug on the whole thing and bury it in the desert. And this happens even when the publisher isn't going bankrupt, they cancel games that are almost done all the time.

We had Warlords of NY already in Div2, at this point the franchise will never progress past the first game, I'm one of those who actually liked Div2 (after playing everything it had to offer) but it's nowhere near as cool as snowy NY and the novelty of the first game

So The first Division is the enemy of the franchise in itself, people still like it more than anything else after it and I don't know if the developer can ever top that

Dat diversity tho, looks like bunch of nannies and kindergarten teachers, not a proper devteam, now it makes sense why protag for that canceled PoP game looked like a barbie doll facewise :D
AI gonna replace if not 100% then easily 99% of those :P

It seems more likely that Ubisoft India only did a straight remake and that Ubisoft Montreal wanted to not only improve the characters and visuals but completely remake the game with an additional playable character (the princess), new moves, new combat system, new powers, new enemies, new score, new puzzles, narrative changes, etc. This would turn a straight, visually enhanced port of POP: Sands of Time into an entirely different game.

Scope creep... always a killer.

Something you only really see in gaming. I dont think there are too many other industries where all companies big and small keep jamming shit into their products to the last minute.

But gaming has a magic bullet other industries dont. Patch updates to fix up mistakes.

While other industries try to get the product or service right the first go around and then add any extras later, gaming is the reverse. Gaming is all about jamming much stuff you can even if sketchy and out of scope or budget, but then fix it up later with 10 patches. And that assumes the company has enough resources to even do good patches later, which might not even happen if they cut the cord supporting the game.

Goes to show the kind of product strategy mantra gaming has vs every other industry.

My previous boss couldn't resist the allure of someone with "credentials" willing to do the job our engineers did for $40k/yr. People don't understand only the highest caste has that mobility in India. It's not about the money. They've already got more money than you. It's about Buffalo Wild Wings and PlayStation. So they go through the entire process of sponsoring his H1B only for him to come and immediately thrash multiple spoil boards, cut obsolete parts and clearly have no idea about anything his degree is supposed to cover. Ended up not being allowed to leave his desk or work on projects. Finally let him go after months of charity wages. They'll do anything to not get sent back to India. Come in every weekend etc and generally break the solidarity of the teams they're working on. The incentives are just so different.

This is who Microsoft has double checking that AI code...

Place I'm at seemed to have done it the right way. We only have one here in the US who is like the team lead and he deals with the ones in India and they do the operational tasks mainly. While we work on projects.

I have the DLC but it's still not a snowy NY. I rather play Dvibsion 2 but my GOD did the team nail the setting with the 1st game, I lot like the AC Unity team with France

I wish Division 3 would go back to a snowy New York, or say a snowy Chicago if it must be a new City
