Trouble in Digital Foundry land - Big Johnny boy not happy over DLSS 5 video

How does he expect a gaming technology outlet could avoid covering insanely impressive gaming technology? Say what you will about some of the face filters, but the other 90% of the scene is incredible and is arguably one of the largest technical leaps in gaming history. Anti-AI crusaders are more radical than religious zealots.

Removing all artistic vision to make every environment look like the same over contrasted art style and making every character look like an Instagram filter?

I hate this so much. Like, I am appalled, I would have an easier time hand waving away an 8 minute long video of Richard and Oliver eating a live baby than watching them shamelessly plug this pile of dogshit. I think I need to unsubscribe from Digital Foundry videos.

It depends on that future moment where DLSS5 releases and they suddenly have zero criticisms to give it.

I don't know what that means to you, but to me that implies that they have become the equivalent of phone youtubers, but for games.

The only new thing here is whether they all agree internally that this video was a bad idea or whether it's John and Alex vs Richard. That might make things a bit more complicated especially considering they're cornerstones of the company by now.
Both John and Alex could go solo making the type of content they make for DF and it's quite likely they would find success without big daddy Rich.

I'm mentioning Alex because I doubt it very much he's on board with this as well considering some of the opinions he has shared about AI.

My guess is that this will be another Nintendo-like fiasco, soon enough they'll have moved on, DF could release a statement about this tomorrow and by this time next week people will have forgotten, Crimson Desert is about to release after all.

I'm with John. I want games to take longer and longer to make until the GTA's of the world take 3 generations of consoles to complete.

John and Alex will have a difficult time going independent. Patreon is great, but it's not going to pay the bill. Hell, it's not going to even let them buy a 5090 or even 32 GB RAM. You would need to buy several GPUs to test each game, different types of pc configs, monitors etc. It's not cheap especially in this era where RAM prices are crazy.

The reality is that by going independent, digital foundry need Nvidia more than ever to pay the bills. All these access to GPUs and other tech is needed.
 
He is obviously just upset they showed Harry Potter in the DLSS 5 reveal. Wasn't he acting like this too when they seemed to initially refuse to cover the game? Acting all badass but funnily enough coming across like he can't cope with basic inquiries. (Yes, I am joking this is the main reason, but his behaviour is similar overall)

I'm glad you enjoy them turning game events into advertisements for AI server tech. Today was about showing off what their AI BS can do for gamers- and it backfired.

You think all the times that MS were using their coverage as a marketing tool for Xbox it was just a coincidence ?

Being charitable, you could argue that it was a case where they'd jump on the collab as it was mutually beneficial, but them getting exclusive early access wasn't a great look.

The main issue I've always had with them though is that I've always found them overly enthusiastic over the presence of proprietary tech, rather than properly giving respect to high levels of artistic skill and creativity being used to produce comparably excellent results.

Less about technique and more about proprietary branding if you see what I mean.

This is why he will mainly post on bluesky- keeps inside that bullshit resetera like bubble. Fuck him. He can't cop any criticism. In fact, fuck the whole digital foundry team. Oh my goodness, how will we EVER know if a game is 4k or not by zooming in on a fucking tree way off into the distance to justify spending thousands on the latest and greatest GPU???
 
I love John's videos and expertise but god he manages each time to come across as a thinnest skinned little bitch on his social media interactions. Probably anxiety and mental health issues, I just wish he would stay away from social media and do his good stuff.

He used to post here. I could have sworn I had him as a friend on PSN at some point. I like his old school focus even if he's an awkward nerd (who isn't?).

The incubation of staying on forums and social media which RESTRICTS freedom of speech is why Bluesky and Resetera are just one sided woke garbage. It's not like the experience is perfect here or on X but at least we have more freedom to joke and say things outside of the restrictive left leaning avenues.

Nah, its not that they shouldn't cover new tech but there's literally zero journalistic integrity in the video. They might as well just put sponsored in the title.

I get that they're an independent outlet now and need to generate revenue now. However, they fallen into the same trap as other outlets before them. Selling your soul to pay the bills.

I mean, to deny things that are so obvious in the video like how its not the same art/textures is kind of laughable. Furthermore, no questions were asked about how all the examples turned out to be hyper realistic stripping the scene of any mood. The examples shown they all look like they have the same art style when in reality, none of those games look anything alike.
