4K UHD/Blu-ray/DVD Community Thread: Bringing the Theater Home!

Now just imagine that they put that rumored 9th ep in there, telling no one :P

I dropped S5. What was the rumour about? Did it end on a cliffhanger?
Not a cliffhanger, but an ending so incredibly pat, neat, and succinct that folks theorized that there MUST be more to it, that the whole cast was sucked into and fed a fairytail ending by Vecna. There was so much "this is an illusion" stuff coming from the art department and set design, were they just sloppy or too clever for their own good and undermined by bad writing?

Sounds like a disappointing way to end the series. The series should've ended with S4 they were never going to reach the heights of S1-2 again.

Just picked up Roger rabbit, tremors, and sixth sense on amazons 3 for 2 sale. Loved Roger rabbit as a kid and I'm excited to see the transfer. Hope it's great.

He was the biggest movie star in the East for two decades, but Hong Kong action legend Jackie Chan had never successfully cracked the West… until the 1990s kicked off a six-film run of phenomenal smash hits that would finally make him an international household name, instantly synonymous with the most jaw-dropping and death-defying stunts ever put on screen!

1994's Drunken Master II sees Jackie back as Wong Fei-hung, the role that first made his name, and teaming up with Shaw Brothers legends Lau Kar-leung and Ti Lung to deliver the ultimate, era-defining love letter to classic kung fu. The following year saw Jackie's first number one box office success in America thanks to Rumble in the Bronx, in which he visits New York City and must defend his friends and family against vicious street gangs and ruthless smugglers, followed by Thunderbolt in which Jackie is forced to compete behind the wheel against a criminal street racer who has kidnapped his sister. In the fourth entry of the much-beloved Police Story series (also known as First Strike), Jackie chases a stolen nuclear warhead on an explosive globe-trotting secret mission; Chan's "big brother" Sammo Hung takes the director's chair in Mr. Nice Guy as Jackie plays a TV chef in Australia forced to do bloody battle against the mob; and finally in Who Am I?, our hero is an ass-kicking amnesiac on the trail of a mysterious new power source as well as his own lost identity.

Finally together and restored in 4K for the first time, this collection of unparalleled martial arts madness chronicles Jackie Chan's crossover to worldwide superstardom (just before Rush Hour made him a bonafide Hollywood icon), in which no bone in his body is left unbroken in his quest to leave you entertained!

This should be fun.

That Arrow Jackie Chan boxset is crazy. All these Warner Bros. Hong Kong-owned Jackie films from the '90s were like holy grails when it came to receiving properly remastered and restored Blu-Rays (and even DVDs, back in the DVD era).
The truth is that there have been some nice releases for the Hong Kong versions of Drunken Master 2, Police Story 4 First Strike, and Mr. Nice Guy, but the Arrow 4K releases are going to blow everything out of the water.
Like the Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest boxset that they did. I mean, Jackie's HK version of Rumble in the Bronx has been long overdue to receive a properly-restored BD. And now Arrow is doing brand-new 4K restorations from the original camera negatives for all these Jackie Chan flicks. Truly phenomenal and remarkable stuff!

Warner Archive Collection did a truly great job in bringing back Drunken Master 2 and Mr. Nice Guy (Hong Kong cut) in 1080p glory.
For Drunken Master 2 they appended the alternative ending (which was removed, because it would probably have stirred some complaints) and they offered us the Cantonese audio track with the original music score.

Police Story 4 First Strike by the German Plaion Pictures offered Jackie Chan fans the uncut HK version in great 1080p quality.

Hey guys. Got a question, I've got a Panasonic ub820 and I've had 3 copies of the transformers one in the UK on 4k and it has a skip at the same point on every play. At the beginning when the sentinel prime says the 5000 race is coming. Then skip. Same spot every time.

I can't find any mention of a disk press error. My player is fine with every other film.

Weird.

Weird.
Sometimes you get it on the disk because of how it was manufactured. The Game of Thrones set is notorious for this. I upgraded my player to a ub820 because of the skipping but my copy would still skip over Ned's beheading every time. Stuff like this definitely doesn't do any favors for the format.

Yeah, I got three copies from my local HMV and every copy does it. Hmmmm

It is a shame, one out of tens and tens if not 100s of disks I own.

Thanks for the reply. I might try and approach HMV and respectfully ask for another copy but this is months if not a year or so later so they won't have to.

I suppose I could just buy another copy. :)

Yank, here. Do not buy another copy. HMV is a UK joint, right? I'm not sure if its web site/store has a lenient return policy, but you could always order/buy a new copy and then return "it" - "it" being the defective copy you currently have. Your net, new expense is zero and you have a new copy of the disc - which hopefully works.

I do this all the time with Amazon in the US. I buy a disc and don't get a chance to watch it until the return period has expired. If, upon my first play of said disc, there are repeatable skips/freezes, I simply order it again and send the defective copy back via the return process. Usually, this resolves the issue and the defect is not present in all copies.

If HMV overly scrutinizes returns (opened/used/whatever), order a new one from Amazon UK or another mass distributor with reasonable return policy for defective product. Obviously, the disc is the same product across the board (at least within region), so it shouldn't be big deal.

Hopefully, in the 4th copy, the glitch is fixed due to more recent, better manufacturing.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if the defect is region specific, but I have this set and have not yet watched it. The Ned Stark beheading scene is something I should look at, specifically, to determine if there are any issues? Will do and "fingers crossed" or whatever, but I may be placing an Amazon order later today...

Great idea. Thanks for the response.

I Do clearly think this was an issue with a batch as it was the same store in the same region and within a couple of weeks of both disks. Could be from the same delivery.

I'll give your idea a shot as it's clearly an issue with that film production run or something as I don't have ANY issues with any other films and I can literally ensure it is the EXACT same spot in the three copies I have. Not one second before not one second after. I can set it up and time it with the exact line of dialogue.

Thanks I'll try your suggestion :)

First time posting here, I enjoy seeing films I love in increasing quality as time goes on, new releases having the colour timing adjusted to match the instructions for the original theatre releases or general intent is great. Cleaning up audio goes such a long way as well, The Long Goodbye's 2021 Kino Lorber release decently cleans up a (sometimes purposefully) jumbled audio mix so you don't have to turn your home theatre up to crazy volumes to understand all the dialogue.

This high quality John Woo deluge after rights were finally secured is amazing. I went to see the 4K restoration of Hard Boiled in the cinema and can't wait for the disc to arrive, I also have The Killer pre-ordered. I'm so used to watching A Better Tomorrow 2 in shit quality and ABT 1 with really poor subtitles even after the remastered asian releases. Not only fixing those issues but getting the workprint of ABT 2 is awesome, but I'm wondering why Arrow is taking so long to release the ABT trilogy, they announced Hard Boiled and The Killer not long after the US Shout! releases and those are now out (or very near with The Killer anyway) but ABT remains absent.

I requested City on Fire 4K as a Christmas gift after not knowing what to ask for, I'd never seen or heard of it and I enjoyed it but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the above films. Bullet in the Head is on the list to get too, I heard its good.

I got The Thing on 4K after far too long considering its maybe my favourite film, I had the Arrow 1080p disc and the only thing that annoys me is the imo big downgrade in audio track selection: The 5.1 DTS-HD MA track is gone, and I don't feel the new DTS-X track adequately replaces it at all, but the main annoyance is the 4.1 DTS-HD MA track derived from the original 70mm 6-track being absent. The 2.0 LPCM is also gone. The DTS-X makes the opening music's heartbeat so low and boring, some sound effects are weirdly mixed too.

Which is a big shame because the 4.1 track sounds absolutely amazing and is better than all the others by a wide margin, the highs tones in parts of the soundtrack are almost deafening (like it is when seen theatrically) and really add to the tension of scenes, for example when they visit the Norwegian base. The panning of audio and separation is so good, reading about how these 70mm 6-track's worked it seems this is because they originally used 5 front channels (the 6th being a mono rear): a left/right, left/right centre and centre.

Its unclear if thats how the The Thing was mixed since it was way after the creation of the format but at the very least they used the centre left/right channels as extra LFE channels, hence why the bass is so good I guess.

Previously, I compared the Arrow disc with the original Shout! release and I much prefer how the film looks on the Arrow release, it has the best look overall, in stills it looks softer but (as DVD Beaver says) in motion the Arrow is better. So if you're in the US and own the original Shout! 1080p release I think its worth getting the new version which is definitely worth having as well as the newest 4K Universal disc.

With the 4K Universal release the increase in dynamic range, sharpness and therefore depth & motion clarity + colour saturation for the scant bright coloured objects and all the shots of fire really adds to the presentation so that overall I'd probably take the hit to audio and watch the 4K release if I had to choose between them:

The zipper segments actually being visible shows the 4K scan is really nice. Here's hoping they will release a disc down the line that includes the 4K transfer + missing audio tracks. Until then I might try making a remux of the 4K and ripping the audio from the Arrow 1080p to mux them into a perfect copy.

Edit: Added some stuff I remembered and changed things I got wrong after more reading, ie the source for the Universal 4K transfer is not the same as the 4K one done by Arrow for their 1080p disc. The old 2012 bluray transfer is pretty poor compared to them and the Shout! scan is different again, so there were many scans apparently. It's all pretty confusing ha.

Heh heh, watched a bit of this off amazon. The english dub is terrible, as expected, but even the chinese language sounds like a bad dub. Wonder if that's original to the film or is just a bad dialogue track.

Plus...WOW do they smoke smoke smoke. Chow with that cigarette juuuuuuust hanging from his lip, so funny now that that sort of thing was the epitome of cool at one point :P

So I double dipped that 3 for 33 deal and got Lethal Weapon, Serenity, and Blazing Saddles. I see they have the OG Creature from the Black Lagoon and some Frankenstien titles, how are those? They have OG Godzilla as well....tempting tempting.

Arrived early :messenger_tongue:

Nice, mine isn't here yet, those screenshots on the Arrow instagram account looked so good, I can't wait. Looks thick. I hope once this is out they start promoting ABT trilogy.

Anyone here own Samsara on bluray? That "film" looks insane, I remembered it existed after watching Baraka the other day (also a lovely quality BD). I nabbed an iso to see how it looks and was blown away, will definitely pick that up soon. I hope both Baraka and Samsara get 4K releases in the future too, theres a fan-made 4K upscale of Baraka floating around but its not worth bothering with.

What are some more high quality discs you all have?

If you like stuff like Samsara and Baraka then the Awaken 4K disc would be worth checking out.

Disney have just shut down their entire home entertainment division as part of a round of layoffs.

They did make a deal with Sony for distribution less than two years ago, so fingers crossed they still maintain some physical releases and either outsource their disc authoring going forward while continuing to use Sony for distro and/or license their content to other labels outright.

It's not just Disney content, but a whole back catalogue of Fox, Buena Vista and Touchstone stuff that needs to see a release.

If they completely drop physical, then it's the high seas all the way for their stuff.
