I was 4 when I went to see Jaws in the UK. For a reason I can't remember my Auntie - who just happened to be an usher in the local Cinema where I lived - was taking care of me for the day and the manager allowed me to sit in the cinema as she worked. So I ended up sat in the seat closest to her chair she used to sit on waiting for cinema go-ers to come in and guide them to their seats.

I remember it being packed out. All was going well until I got up to the scene where the head bobs out of the sunken boat, and along with everyone one else in the cinema I screamed. I dived under my seat in tears. My Auntie rushed me out of studio 1 and in put me in studio 2 to watch the film in there, while she had to carry on working.

That film turned out to be the giant spider invasion!! Ahh, the 70's.

Wow, National Geographic is still around?

Edit: Speaking of National Geographic, when I bought my house, the previous (and only owner) left two gigantic boxes in the attic, one full of old National Geograohics, and one full of vintage Playboys.

I only just thought of that because I'm about to go into my attic to check for roof leaks.

Jaws is a great movie.

I think Spielberg has made equally good movies since then, but I honestly find it hard to make a case for anything of his better as a piece of pure entertainment cinema.

Honestly, you compare Jaws or Raiders to most summer blockbusters and even all these years on, they just crush.

Love this movie have probably watched it 10 times. One of the rare cases where the movie is far better than the book.

Edit: Haha I did not see all the similar comments above I guess it's a common opinion on the book.

The book is terrible. Steven and crew kept the few good things and ditched the rest. Its one of the few cases where the movie is infinitely superior to the book.
Yeah I know, the shark bits in the book are good, the rest is fucking weird. I read it when I was like 12 so the crazy sex stuff between Hooper and Ellen Brody had an oversized importance impact on me and now I can't not imagine a sweaty naked Richard Dreyfuss pounding away at Ellen Brody.

Jaws was the first DVD I ever bought so fond memories there with the DVD picture quality and menu options. It was such a leap over VHS.

VHS had jumped the shark for me at that point.

Anyone? Is there a normal 4K 50th anniversary edition without the fancy steel book?

Thanks.

I suppose it will drop a few months after the steelbook release (I suppose it's smart business to cultivate the high gross item exclusively while there is still the buzz). I assume that you are in the market for the normal sized DVD to fit into a collection? Or is it based on price alone? I like the idea of purchasing this film on BR it's such a classic!

My favourite film.
I never tire of watching it.
I thought your avatar was Roy Scheider for a second haha!

I dont think I ever watched the film from beginning to end. Only part I remember is the awesome ending fight with the guy sliding into Jaws.

I saw Jaws for the first time only a couple of years ago. That movie is a classic, not just because of the shark but because of the characters, the acting, the script, the soundtrack, the directing ...The movie may be almost 50 years but it curb stomps all modern movies.

In the book the whole point of Roy's character joining the expedition was to keep Dreyfuss's character on his sight and find out if the affair is real. Also in the book there's a lot of tension with each character trying to sabotage the others plan to kill the shark. The book isnt just about hunting a shark.

It's a time capsule and a good one at that.
