Dual core athlon 64, a suitable socket 939 board, at least a gig of RAM, and a high-end PCI-Express graphics card (ATI X1K series is good if you think you'll be likely to be doing any video encoding or DVD watching along with your gaming, because of the Avivo thingy, but other than that just go with whoever's winning).

I can recommend around £500 worth of stuff. You can send the other £300 as a donation to the "Keep Priz Happy through the holidays with Lap Dances/Private Show $$$ at the Horse" fund (last Saturday night was quite memorable, though... )

ABIT KN8 Socket 939 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
Geforce 6800GS 256MB PCI-E card
Two 512mb or 1gb PC3200/DDR400 sticks (Something like this)

You could spend the money on a 7800 series, but for now, the 6800GS seems like a better value and should hold you over.
