‘Zoombombing’ is now considered a federal offense

Personally some of these are pretty funny, and I see this as more of a failing on Zoom than something that should be considered a crime. I guess the US gov't doesn't have anything better to do right now...

“You think Zoom bombing is funny? Let’s see how funny it is after you get arrested,” stated Matthew Schneider, the US Attorney for the Eastern Michigan district, said in a statement. “If you interfere with a teleconference or public meeting in Michigan, you could have federal, state, or local law enforcement knocking at your door.”

Oftentimes, it’s not a prankster hacking into a call so much as the organizer overlooking key privacy settings to help protect the call from unwanted third parties sneaking on.

Here's some examples:

EDIT: This is what I'm talking about where it's Zoom's responsibility to fix:

As confirmed by Gizmodo, public-facing Zoom links share a specific string of characters that, when plugged into Google search (or “dorked,” in internet parlance), will turn up dozens of upcoming Zoom meetings. Trying the search term ourselves, we were able to pull links for Zooms dedicated to hot yoga, wine tasting, and legal advice—all in less than a minute—not to mention more than a few Zoom’s dedicated to parents and their kids.

The article does go on to list a bunch of stuff that absolutely goes too far. Disrupting a class by yelling or naming yourself "Jack Mehoff" is one thing, but I doubt anyone would think it was cool, or okay, to play porn in a kindergarten group, which is already a crime. This is 100% on Zoom and AGs shouldn't even have to declare that this is a crime, Zoom should fix its shit policies.

Didn’t even know this was a thing. Fuck I’m sick of Zoom

Apparently the security is so lax that if someone gets your link they can do whatever they want, including kicking people from the rooms. Add to it that some local government and schools have made their zoom links public in order to get attendees it leads to people pranking them.

yeah we heard about this on standup this morning. we've been using Zoom for years. think we will be switching platforms. last week i visited my brother and his two grade school kids used Zoom as well for remote schooling.

apparently it's due to people sharing links on reddit. really dumb move, that.

Do you think USA can’t pass some laws while also focusing on fighting the virus?
I think it’s a great idea.

I think there's plenty of things that can be done that have nothing to do with a virus but also don't make prank phone calls punishable by jail time. Jumping on a video chat and exposing yourself is already a crime, it's called indecent exposure, possibly even contributing to the delinquency. Policing users of a company that can't be trusted to actually have security guardrails isn't the role of the government.

Pretty sure this will cover other platforms as well , it’s not “just” a prank phone call when someone exposes himself to kids .

It's good to see that anyone who knows how to use a computer is still called a "hacker."

These aren't even lulz, just stupid shit.
Yes. It was amusing for like 30 seconds. Then it got tired.

If you host Zoom as a webinar, you can see who has all joined as the host (professor in this case), but they can't talk or show video. They could still type questions.

A webinar as opposed to a meeting.

Everyone they arrest for this they should put into a temporary coma. Then when they have enough people, they should unleash them onto one of the semi-deserted islands the US owns and turn it into a televised version of No Escape (Ray Liotta).

That way all of us ordered to shelter at home can have something good to watch for prime time. Could even run sport bets on it.

If I'm going to be in the Apocalypse, at least give me some Running Man.
