How many of these "So called American youths did the sample?" Also, where? If it is from one of those "red-Neck" states where they have sex with each other from thier own family, then I can understand.

Bushie is growing little Jesus Nazis just like Hitler's youth programs. This time, it's under the guise of conservative Christianity.

Crock of shit. Most students can't stand our government. Not only that but most of us don't give a flying shit about christianity either. Maybe in the bible belt or some shit but most of us are fine.

Exactly. I love how everyone buys into this stupid bs because it's cool to hate America these days. We're not all morons people. We have a dumb ass president who pulled the religion card to get votes from all the nut bags in red neck country. This survey is probably from alabama or some shit.

Um, I doubt it. There are a lot of ignorant morons in high school (which is probably why it's a good thing you have to be 18 to vote). But their opinions change once they leave the shelter of their parents' place and go out into the real world. I wouldn't trust any poll given to high schoolers. PEACE.

Lord, is reading a lost skill?

The survey was conducted last spring by the University of Connecticut.

and I'm not sure how old it is, the byline on the article is Jan 31st.

As someone wisely said in another thread--most high school students are morons. I don't mean that in a vicious way, but with the exception of a handful of individuals my experince has suggested that most don't have a well informed opinion about anything. They don't bother with news and politics and at the same time the schools usually don't do a good job of informing students in that way. With all the quibbling over intelligent design and other stupid shit, I would love for some kind of renaissance to occur in Civics and related subjects. We need it more than ever IMO.

Couldn't you really say this about the whole populace though? I mean, how many informed, intelligent people do you run into on an average day? Me, I'd say about .1...including myself.

I guess that's true. I think my perspective on adult life is slightly warped because I spend most of my day at a university.

The press doesn't need to be subject to government approval. They should be subject to MY approval, though. I'd get rid of the retarded hours and hours of coverage of Kobe Bryant's back door entry antics(c'mon, you KNOW that's what happened. For fuck's sakes, did a little anal action ever KILL anyone?), Brad and Jen watch 2005, and other useless idle worship(pun intended!). I would also institute open hunting season on the media. Every October, it would be legal to hunt, kill, skin and eat members of the media. This way, only the strong would survive, and useless hacks like Rush, Hannity, O'reilly and that shrewish obnoxious Randi Roads, who makes me hate being a liberal, well they would all be first up against the wall. C'mon, you KNOW Limbaugh would be good eating.

Im more frightened by the 10 percent that thinks the press needs more power.

The press should have as much power as they can get, it keeps those in authority in check.

The full report (a 455KB PDF) is here, btw:

Oh here we go... The point I was making was it's probably in some unknown little town with red neck overly conservative religious nuts. I just happened to pick Alabama because I imagine some places there are probably like that. Anyway, the report was from CT so I was wrong, but seriously, give me a break. Aren't you being a little sensitive about this?

Sorry to break it to you Ping. But I'm willing to bet the same ratio is true in your country.

It's a sampling of hundreds of schools from across the country. I'd guess that attitudes in schools near you are similar, so there's no use in hoping that it's someone else's problem; these people can vote in your elections in two or four years.

What press powers disturb you? If there are none, what potential expansions of power leave you frightened?

I'm not hoping it's someone elses problem. I'm questioning the validity. Something smells wrong. University students should be wise enough to know better. It's just not computing how people could want this.
