Normally I don't care too much for the OT forum, but some forum posts praising Don Bluth's animated films piqued my curiousity, and I borrowed some of his films from a friend - the Secret of Nimh, All Dogs go to Heaven, and an American Tail. I have to say I was incredibly surprised at how much I enjoyed them, especially Nimh. They all have really rich animation with an attention to detail that in my opinion puts a lot of Disney's work to shame. I was especially surprised at how mature the premise of these movies were. Since then I've been hunting down top 10 lists and the movies on them. The most recent ones I've watched are Watership Down and the Plague Dogs. Both of these blew me away, especially the Plague Dogs.

Anyway, I'm curious what GAF has on its list of top 10 animated movies (not including anime).

As an animator that has met and talked to Don Bluth, I can't really make a list like this. I was humbled to the point I can no longer even try to rate the classic stuff done the old fashioned way without the help of computers.

I will say that Secret of Nimh is definately one of my top favorites (we're excluding anime so Miyazaki's stuff won't count).

Yup, sorry to do that to you but I've already been introduced to Miyazaki's work. :)

But the amount of detail and artistry that went into all the movies I mentioned in my first post in just mind-boggling.

Why haven't you watched The Land Before Time yet? It's kind of sad how the abhorrent milking of the series has really undermined how incredible the original film was. The only real flaw is that it's far too short, though there's a good reason for that. Probably my favorite Don Bluth film.

As for my top animated films

1. The Lion King/Who Framed Roger Rabbit (pick one, and yes, Roger Rabbit better count or I'll tear your eyeballs out :P)
3. The Land Before Time
4. the Secret of Nimh
5. The Incredibles
6. The Emperor's New Groove (probably the most underrated animated film I've seen)
7. Beauty and the Beast
8. Monsters Inc
9. Toy Story
10. And my personal dark horse pick, Oliver and Company.

Other favorites include: Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under, An American Tail, Lilo and Stitch, Toy Story 2, Ratatouille, Mulan, and A Goofy Movie

Others which people probably won't think of immediately but which I liked anyway: the Tom and Jerry movie, Don Bluth's version of Thumbelina, Titan A.E. (criminally underrated), Robin Hood, and The Great Mouse Detective

The Secret of Nimh has aged incredibly well - I bought it on DVD a few months ago and fired it up over Christmas to appease the young 'uns - I ended up watching it with them the whole way through.

I'm going to avoid CG-dominated titles altogether and nominate:

- Flight of Dragons
- Akira
- Laputa
- Sleeping Beauty (the music in the last 15 minutes is simply incredible)

Ignoring anime is pretty stupid, but it's your OP.

American Pop by Ralph Bakshi.

The only worthwhile American animation since Disney died and his company was turned into an automated Walt Disney corpse-fucking machine.

1. Toy Story
2. Toy Story
3. Toy Story
4. Toy Story
5. Toy Story
6. Toy Story
7. Toy Story
8. Toy Story
9. Toy Story
10. Toy Story

US animated films.

1. Who Framed Rodger Rabbit (it counts, if for nothing more than this scene http://youtube.com/watch?v=jCt28z7DHW8 )
2. The Lion King
3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm/Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Uncut version)
4. Rattatouile
5. The Incredibles
6. The Secret of Nimh
7. South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut (surprised I'm the first to mention this)
8. Balto
9. Toy Story
10. Snoopy Come Home

Some other favorites of mine
-The Iron Giant
-Land Before Time
-Sword in the Stone
-Over the Hedge
-Futurama: Benders Big Score
-Finding Nemo
-Oliver and Company

on the anime front, I wouldn't even count Spirited Away in the best Ghibli Films.

Secret of NIMH is my personal favorite animated film. Nothing else captures that feeling of mystery in quite the same way; you can tell Bluth really had something to prove at the time. For an independent production, the technical standards are through the roof.

Looks like you're a fellow Bluth fan!

3. The Land Before Time

Maybe I'm nostalgic for old school Don Bluth but I still absolutely love this movie and watch it regularly when I'm feeling down. It's barely over an hour long!

Makes no sense not to include anime as well, but whatever.

10. Ratatouille
9. The Jungle Book
8. 101 Dalmations
7. The Incredibles
6. Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
5. Mickey's Christmas Carol
4. Dumbo
3. Iron Giant
2. Toy Story
1. The Lion King

Something like that. Hard to nail down.

would also be in my top ten, and is not a traditional "anime' but the op seems uninterested in non american animation

Not traditional anime because then the people that make blanket statements like "anime sucks" would sound silly when they say they like Miyazaki films?

I don't really have a particular order past a top three:

1. Lion King
2. An American Tale
3. Secret of Nimh (When I was a kid, I started reading the books because of this movie and knowing the source material didn't take anything away. It was a pretty good representation.)

(4-10) In no particular order:
Heavy Metal
American Pop
Aladdin
Alice in Wonderland
The Fox and the Hound
Jungle Book
All Dogs Go to Heaven (I guess)

This is excluding cg movies, some of which I'd put ahead of those in the 4-10 category.

edit: I'd also like to state my love for Roger Rabbit and make a mention of a movie it seems everyone forgot about: Cool World. Saw this the other say and I forgot Brad Pitt is in it.

If you like Bluth, you should also check out his later films at Fox Animation Studios:

-Anastasia
-Bartok the Magnificent
-Titan A.E.

Titan A.E. especially is underrated. I liked Bluth's darker approach, he's really alone among American animators/directors in consistently trying to push animation aimed at kids into more "dangerous" themes. Lots of abrupt contrasts of intensely scary sequences interspersed with the usual lighter in tone upbeat stuff. He almost always worked with John Pomeroy too, one of the best old guard Disney animators still working today.

top 3
1. Aladdin
2. Lion King
3. Toy Story

4-10
Prince of Egypt
Cinderella
Finding Nemo
Mulan
Iron Giant
Brother Bear
Aristocats

Am I the only one who really hopes for a resurgence in quality 2d animation? Or is that a pipe dream?
disney is making a new movie called the Princes and the Frog. Its scheduled to come out in 2009

I think it's actually good that he's excluding anime. I mean, how many "Recommend me some Anime" threads do we have here? It good to hear people rank their American animation faves for a change.

Okay, sure. But the topic is on animated films, which means only a handful of anime would be mentioned anyway. Most of the content in all the anime threads here are about anime TV or OVA series.

Watership Down
The Iron Giant
The Curse of the Wererabbit
Pinocchio
Transformers: The Movie
The Snowman
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Damn! That's the next one I'm watching for sure, if not just for the seamlessness between the animated characters and live-action stuff.

You've never seen Roger Rabbit? O_o

from non anime:

Im a big fan of land before time. incredible film. very emotional.

As far as the CGI ones, I think the original toy story was funny. my favorite though is perhaps finding nemo. its such a cute movie. rattotuie is really good too.

from disney, i think Lion King is my favorite. was very powerful. i also kinda liked beauty and the beast. very dark. and mulan and emprors new groove was funny.

I'll say Wallace and Grommit as a whole series is definitely my favorite American animation. Other mentions have to be The Iron Giant and The Lion King. Also, I read all of the Secret of Nihm books, but I never knew about the movies. Maybe I'll look into those, I loved the books when I was younger.

1. The Incredibles
2. Toy Story
3. Ratatouille
4. Monster's Inc
5. Toy Story II

What can I say, I <3 Pixar. Also I really need to rewatch the Iron Giant. It's been years since the last time I saw it and Brad Bird is just awesome.
