10 years ago today....

.....the biggest franchise in gaming today launched. On October 29, 2003, Infinity Ward dropped Call of Duty upon the world.

Since then, the series sold over 100 million copies and became one of the most popular games series ever.

played the shit out of this on the pc. it ran super smooth on my mediocre rig. the weapon sounds were amazing. the player movements were smooth as butter.

Stopped caring once the real Infinity Ward got fucked over hardcore. The non-real Infinity Ward games are terrible, with exception to the CoD1's expansion pack.

CoD1 has aged really poorly though.

But NOW we have no jobs, no cash, and no hope

Happy Birthday, CoD.

B. Ops II > MW > B. Ops > MW2 > 3 > WaW > everything else.

One of my favorite franchises.

This game made me fall in love with online multiplayer gaming.

Still enjoy the series to this day.

The game gets a lot of hate nowadays, but the original CoD was mind-blowing back in the day. The campaign was incredibly action packed compared to other shooters, and the MP was fun as hell. I spent so many hours in that.

While I don't play CoD anymore, I still keep an eye on it hoping that one day they'll mix it up enough for me to come back.

Happy birthday CoD!

I never understood why I would want to stop playing Allied Assault and pick up Call of Duty.

I probably missed out, eh?

Yes, yes you did. I was a MoH fan until the day CoD dropped. MoH just didn't feel the same after that.

(looks at thread with anticipation of what it could possibly be)

(opens thread, looks at OP)

...(shrugs and leaves with disappointment) :(

Absolutely loved the early entries in the series. I still play the new games, but I loved playing the original on my, admittedly horrendous, PC back when it launched. Ran buttery smooth though!

I like COD!

I spent way too many hours in Cod4 and WaW. Haven't really played too much since then, maybe Ghost will change that.

Do you think Activision had any idea that the series would blow up like it did (in terms of popularity)?

Probably not, in fact I remember being more impressed by early Medal of Honor before they ruined their name. I distinctly remember the first time an enemy threw a grenade back at me, it blew my mind.

Hands up who read the article in the Metro newspaper?

Happy Birthday CoD. Not really into the series these days, but I've had some great memories.

What? I thought this series started with Modern Warfare?

I never played this game, but my dad did a lot. I think he was bad at it, but maybe not. Who knows.

10 years ago I'd watch an episode of Band of Brothers on DVD, and then play CoD for the rest of the night. Good thymes.

I thought it was the same as Medal of Honor. I guess it died when it got out of WW2, huh?

Remember it well.

When the missus threw me out, my cousin and I converted the shop he worked into a nightly LAN club, everyone we knew was invited. Had some good times on CoD and it ran well. Kind of gutted I got talked into going back home.

I remember this game being something like a Medal of Honor clone. To this day it is a mystery to me how EA destroyed the franchise while Activision build a new one. I think Kotick is well worth his money.

How come Medal of Honor never took off? It was around longer.

MoH was very popular for a while. MoH:AA was the best in the series IMO.

However, the developers behind MoH:AA (studio was called 2015; game was published by EA) knew the type of game they wanted to make which was a historical WW2 game told in a more cinematic fashion, however because they were contracted to work on an existing franchise they couldn't make the complete game they wanted. Most of the devs at 2015 then left and formed Infinity Ward to work on the WW2 shooter they wanted to make with Activision (because ATVI wanted to get into the WW2 arena in a big way, which EA was dominating with MoH and BF1942). Call of Duty was then born, and the rest is history.

Played so much Call of Duty on my PC that I think I had the levels memorized, I loved the British and the Soviet campaign, I used to always tried to save captain Price in the sabotage ship mission but I don't think it was possible. Being the first game I played that limited the amount of guns you could carry blew my mind.

I remember the only people that played this were hardcore PC shooter fans. Then they showed it to their friends that liked WW2 games. Then some of those people picked it up. Then COD2 and COD3 were out in time for this generation's console launches, and some non-PC gamers that were impressed by what they saw of COD bought it. At least that's how it seemed to be among people I knew. Even then it still felt sort of niche, popular enough but no Halo or GTA.

Pretty crazy how much it blew up with COD4.
