There were a lot of fantastic movies from the 90's and I always appreciate the time people take to put together lists like this. One personal favorite of mine that didn't make your list: Fight Club. It might stand out because I've been daydreaming of pulling a Tyler Durden/'Project Mayhem' against major news corporations. :messenger_grimmacing_

When I did my original list it was about 170 films and Fight Club was in that list. I've also thought of doing a list of The Best Of '99, and I didn't want this list to skew too heavy on one year over another. I also wanted the list to be as broad as possible and cover as many genres as possible and highlight art house films and non-English speaking films. Creating that balance is always the hardest part, sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don't.

Cool list. Well done. I would've included

American History X
Braveheart
Fight Club
Good Will Hunting
My Cousin Vinny

Maybe The Sixth Sense, and Saving Private Ryan.
Not sure how The Last of the Mohicans or Dances with Wolves hold up.

But cool list.

Thanks, I'm kind of thinking I should have made it a 150 or 200 film list

It's a pretty cool list of a wide range of genres and some eclectic choices. I'm pretty sure some stuff like Johnny Mnemonic could probably be shunted for something more iconic or more cult classic.

I loved Johnny Mnemonic on VHS, it was actually my gateway film to Japanese cinema as I started to import Japanese movies because of Beat Takeshi.

I decided a few weeks ago to start making essential lists on Letterboxd for people who want to explore certain decades in cinema. I was really happy with the feedback for my documentaries list so here is my list of the 100 Essential Films Of The ’90s.
This is a good list but some movies are missing. Nice to see Perfect Blue there.

I've seen The Pest way too many times. Its just a stupid fun movie. The opening in the shower is still funny. I should watch it on the weekend.

Perfect Blue was one of the first DVD's I ever bought along with Ghost In The Shell and an Alien Boxset.

I figured it must be a personal favorite, but let's be honest it's not exactly essential 90s cinema for most.

Watching Navy SEALs now, it might be cheese but its the best kind of cheese, like Top Gun.

Plus it has Cpl Hicks, Pvt Hudson, Slider & Topper Harley in it.

Pilot: Lieutenant, you guys are incredible. Thank you.
Curran: There's no reason to thank us because we don't exist. You never saw us. This never happened.
Hawkins: One more thing; you're welcome.

Lots of good stuff in that list if I had to put one on now it would be Princess Mononoke.

Missing lots of essential films tho - where is Last Crusade, Independence Day, the Mask, or Austin Powers? Hot Shots or Naked Gun?

Fuck I just googled it and never knew there's a 4k box set. Gonna scope it out.

(Edit: Shit, it' UK only???)

Behold the greatest:

- Arnie in his prime
- Sharon Stone in her prime
- Awesome special effects (for its time)
- Constant action. It's like one long chase scene
- Tons of violence and cussing
- Asshole Ronny Cox
- Asshole Michael Ironside
- Mutants
- A midget with a machine gun
