I would say it's one of the harder languages to gain a strong proficiency in, but as far as constructing basic sentences to make yourself understood, it's far easier. No gender, no awkward cases to fuss with, just plug words into the right part of the sentence and you're good to go. You won't sound eloquent, but English speakers tend to be more forgiving than some other native speakers, I've noticed.

In my experience, English is among the easiest languages to learn to speak due to the simplicity of its grammatical rules, if not the orthographical ones. Coming from a language were phonetics dictate spelling (Spanish) it does become a nuisance to deal with the latter, but it's not that big of a problem to hinder communication between a student and a native speaker.
