12ms response time on monitor enough?

So I'm thinking about getting an LCD, but wondering what response time I should be ok with.

I mean, 4ms is great, and 8ms is cool. But most of those max out at 1280x1024. Dell has a 20" LCD with 12ms response time, is that good enough for games?

For most people I think 16ms is the absolute maximum you should look at. Anything above and you'll certainly notice it. At 16ms, you might notice it; but you might not. Now that sets are getting cheaper, 12ms are becoming more popular so you should aim for that.

I've used a screen with 16ms and it's fine for 99% of things tbh

If so thats a really nice set

It is the 2005FPW

I think I can get it around $450, maybe a little less after coupons and discounts.

I'm not that worried about response time, I'd like to get a LCD that supports higher then 1280x1024. But most cap at that. That is why I'm looking at the 20" from Dell.

One cool thing it does have, that nothing in my price range has, is the S-video / Composite input. So you could hook a console up to this badboy if you wanted :D

12ms is fine. 16ms is okay for the most part but you will get some ghosting. 12ms is very very little, 8ms is (pretty much) none.

You won't have any problems with 12ms.

any more you would like to add to that? How is the color? I heard there is a backlight problem when there is a lot of black on screen. Also how is the pip and stuff?

colors are good, but default brightness is way too high. have to tweak settings to get it to a level i liked (on the monitor, dvi supports the following adjustments: brightness, red, green, and blue colors).

yes, on some monitors the backlight is way out of spec and uneven, at least on the ones manufacturered last year when everyone got one. thankfully dell has a good return policy (100% satisfaction guarentee, even 1 dead pixel u can send it back), so if you're not happy with it you can try another. backlight bleeding is an issue on most lcd's however...

my friend uses the pip, its pretty cool.. supports s-video and composite.

non native resolutions look very good

works fine in battlefield (for me) but alot of games dont support widescreen right out of teh box (check out www.widescreengamingforum.com ). works well with DVI to my HD satellite box too

here's a comparison with the apple 20"
http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400

also might want to consider the 2405fpw

My 1905FP is 20 ms and blows in FPS in certain circumstances (like lots of contrast since it takes more time to change pixels).

Fine for RTS which is what I play most.

not an idiot
love my 2005FPW... i game on it with everything and notice no ghosting or any problems. the backlight problem isn't that bad on it either....

so are the DVI and VGA input seperate? So you can have one computer plugged into the DVI, and one into the VGA?

For gamers a 12ms is very good.
A lot of companies arent giving you the real ms though, I know philips has started to do the real honest thing by timing the signal from end to front but not everyone are doing it.

A friend of mine got a 17 inch philips lcd for $280CAD and it's GORGEOUS. Makes me wanna buy one :(

With the newest coupons active today, 2005fpw is $436 before tax/shipping. Shit, I was planning on getting a12ms 19" from Newegg for about $230-240 after rebate, but this is so fucking tempting.

FUCK! I can't get this... only $436 though...

Really sweet thing about the Dell is that it apparently can take native resolutions in 4:3. So instead of stretching EVERY signal to 16:10, it will simply do black bars on the side.
