Those 14 characteristics skirt over some of the most basic requirements for fascism. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that there are traces of fascism in America and the Bush administration meticulously operates at times like Hitler and Stalin did (which the flash highlights - rousing nationalism, identifying distinct enemies).

I'm not concerned about that. After George W., I think the country is ready for a change.

In a silly attempt to say something serious on the topic:

The extremists who want to paint an over-arching conspiracy of Nazi Germany Reborn do help the real problems get lost. As a friend was observing a few weeks ago, real conspiracies do happen all the time. It's just that they're usually not as epic or extreme in their power and reach as alarmists love to paint them. There really are some people - most accurately called dominists - in America who DO SEEM to want to ring in the new milennia with what is effectively fascism. I've seen some fascinating and disturbing analysis (which don't fly off into loony land) in the direction.

Most real-life conspiracies simply aren't as capable and competant as what we tend to imagine. Manipulating society and government isn't as easy as looks and despite what some of us like to think about a corrupt government, some of the safeguards in place against that sort of thing do actually work.

We should keep in mind though that there are people out there, on our own turf, who do think - usually "for our own good" - that we need to be dominated.
