15k for a 2017 Toyota Mirai. Worth it?

I'm wanting a new car, and I was thinking about a Toyota Mirai. Obviously the big concern is fuel. There is a few fuel stations near me though, so that wouldn't be an issue. It gets 66 miles per kilogram of hydrogen, which sounds good. But really is only the equivalent of 30 miles / gallon of gas since the tank is only 5 kg and it costs like $11 / kg.

Still the idea is appealing. The design is nice.

I wouldn’t. Mirai is a fuel cell vehicle, which is a completely different technology from battery electric (like in Tesla). All signs point to battery electric being the future of non-combustion engine motors. That’s why the cost of the vehicle you’re considering buying is so much lower than the MSRP.

Mirai means future can't believe this thing has been on the market for 6 years now though. Why not buy another Toyota vehicle or SUV?

It's admirable that you want something that's eco friendly but currently alternative fuel run automobiles are still pretty expensive. If you only have a budget of around 15K maybe it's better to just reduce your carbon footprint with something economical.

Equivalent of 30MPG at $11 per kg? I filled up my Corolla which gets 35MPG for $2.20/gallon yesterday. Carbon footprint and all I get but that’s a huge premium on just driving the thing, and where do you even buy hydrogen?

any warranty? What are the cost of repairs in a low production vehicle like that?
Seems a bit of a hassle to own.

My BiL got a hybrid, he commuted 2-3 hours a day and spent a ton on gas. He did all the math in the new vehicle with the gas costs.

Now he works from home and the math no longer works. Lol

Only other car I'd go with that isnt full fuel is hybrid. Toyota's hybrids are out of this world, damn good cars. You should look into that.

But not used Hybrid though, you don't know the state of the battery and servicing the car could cost a shitton of money, not the mention, is high voltage circuit, so I would not fuck around with it. This aside, yes Toyota hybrids are excellent cars.

Well I'm not really into buying used cars at all but yeah hybrids especially. Though if someone wants to go that route then Toyota would be a good option, they're really at the top as far as hybrids are concerned and you can always get a used certified car with a warranty at one of their dealers.

Yeah, I just said that, because OP was talking about used car.

People acknowledge hydrogen fuel cell cars are great and how Toyota manipulated car fuel yes battery, corn, water fed cars are great and are respected but I don't buy the current design.

2021 Toyota Mirai aims for 400 mile range.

My 97 4Runner just hit 250k miles, it still gets 18-20 miles a gallon and if you point at any mountain it will probably get to the top eventually. I took it to Moab and did the rim trail with barely any modifications to my vehicle.

Fuel efficiency is awesome but I would never give up my almost classic hipster car now.

Thanks for the advice team. Ended up buying a Prius instead

I still think the Mirai is an awesome car. But the instructure just isn't there. I read some horror stories of fights breaking out at hydrogen stations. Or pumps freezing.

I went EV, I was trying to do the Hyundai Ioniq EV lease special (99$ / mo) and got no where close sadly, but my job is local. I dont have to pay for eletric and maintenance cost should be low.

If you wanted a new and could go the EV route, GM seem to have an unadvertised special on the bolt if you lease (i was looking at the website this week), sub 100$ on good credit and a decent chunk down, over 200 miles of range.
