Holy crap - 18,000! This is terrible. And right along with it goes all the homes, families and business destroyed. Many of those who lived lost most or all of what they have. Those reports of the schools collapsed......Incredible.

A lot of it has to do with the quality of the buildings. Most of them are solid stone or earth and are not designed to withstand quakes; it doesn't take too much to topple them.

it's not hard to round a number from all the collapsed apartment's and home's that had about 2-3 days to evacuate from the earthquake that was on the forcast for the past week.
