18-1 or 73-9?

73-9 isn't undefeated. 16-0 was.

However, Golden State now has the ignominious mark of being the first NBA team to give up a 3-1 lead in the Finals, and the first team since 1978 to lose game 7 at home.

That's going to hurt for a while.

Yankees '04 was worse, even if it wasn't for the championship. But for this, I'll say GS is worse since blowing a series as seemingly wrapped up as the Finals this year was more of a choke job than the Pats.

73-9

They were the first team in NBA history to lose a 3-1 lead. To be the equivalent or worse, the Patriots would have had to set the record for the largest blown lead in a Super Bowl game.

18 and 1, easily.

Yes, the Warriors were up 3-1 and lost game 7 at home, but as least they were playing the second best team in the league. The Patriots got beat by the fucking 10-6 Giants.

correct

the g men almost didnt make the playoffs

cavs run through the eastern conference like no big dea

i blame kerr/curry

kerry for playing ezeli too much and curry for boneheaded pass attempts that lead to missed opportunities.

Shouldn't it be 18-1 or 88-18?

Anyways, just looking at the line it's easier to say that 18-1 worse since it broke up a perfect season but really it has to be GS.

It's far easier to blow 1 game in the NFL than a 7 game series in the NBA.

18-1

Pats choke job will never be outdone. Losing to Eli Manning and scoring 14 points

yes...becuase losing to a future hall of fame quarterback is a terrible thing ;)

Either way - 73-9.

Goldenstate was up 3-1 with 2 left to play at home and couldnt make it happen.

Anyone that says 18-1 is straight-up crazy.

A single football game can go sideways in an instant.

Losing 3 games in a row is beyond bad luck - it's an unprecedented collapse that exposed a weak team.

The salt from the Tyree play is still delicious years later.

But I'd probably give it to GSW. Other than the crazy Splash Bros stuff they didn't play particularly great even against OKC but still had several chances after being up three games in those finals.

I think that 18-1 will have more lasting cultural impact, just because every time a team starts 10-0 or 12-0 in the NFL (which happens every now and then) they start talking about the Dolphins and the Pats. That's always going to happen, the Pats are always going to be brought up when some NFL team starts on a streak.

What NBA team is going to threaten to go 73-9? It's so rare. People are going to bring it up, but it's not going to be brought up every couple of years like it comes up in the NFL.

73-9, especially since Stern called it in. How you gonna punch 3 people in the nuts, only get one suspension and not win the chip. People will try and cover that up but that was done bull shit.

It's a lot more one sided than people realize.

by all means 73-9 is the bigger choke. the best record of all time not only losing 3 in a row, but multiple on the road against a comeback attack in the finals of a magnitude of deficit that had never been accomplished before? that's just unreal.

but people see that 18-1 for the 1. The Pats won all of the games up until the last one, and were poised to be perfect. This team lost 9 and the other lost 1, surely the team losing only the 1 is the bigger upset, right? Not accounting for matches played in a one game playoff format, a format that statistically allows for more error than...well any format than one with more than one game.

The numbers paint an incredibly bigger picture than what actually happened.

Neither.

The 2010 Boston Bruins (39-30-13).

They had a 3-0 lead against the Flyers, and proceeded to lose 3 in a row, leading to a game 7. In that game 7 they took a 3-0 lead before blowing that, and losing 4-3.

They blew a 3-0 series lead and a 3 goal lead in game 7 on home ice. There's been 3 goal leads blown in game 7s, there's been 3-0 series leads get choked away, but never both.

You simply can't get as bad as the 2010 Boston Bruins.

By that logic, you'd have to go that NYY team that lost to the Red Sox. No team in baseball has ever blown a 3-0 lead, and the Yanks were the American League champs during the regular season. 2010 Boston Bruins were a 6 seed.

No team has won coming back from 3-1 down in the NBA finals... Also they had home court advantage twice and was arguably the best team this season. That was Golden states series to win yet they chocked.

73-9, easily. As many have said they were up 3-1. And didn't win another game. Had the lead late in this...at home....and lost.

Add to that they were down 3-1 to OKC, won that series then proceed to be part of history by losing in the Finals after being up 3-1.

73-9, easily.

I was gonna mention this series too. I hate the Yankees, you would have thought I was a Red Sox fan that series.

I'd take 18-1, to be honest.

in Football, "any given Sunday", you know? Could that Giants team have beaten those Patriots 4 times out of 7? Dunno about that. That's how football goes. But basketball? You either are better or you aren't, and you have 2 weeks worth of games to prove it. The Cavs proved they were the better team, the end. The Giants proved they were the better team on one day.

Giants are absolute garbage who can't even make the playoffs and will probably never win another ring in the next 50 years

so 18-1 definitely

What about 2015 Kentucky (NCAA)?

Not saying any of these are "chokes" though. Just throwing them in the mix. They were unbeaten, just like the Patriots (38-1)

EDIT: They didn't get to the final round, though.

73-9 by far. They had home court, up 3-1 and then proceeded to lose 3 games in a row. Unfathomable.

1 game takes all in football are completely different.

if the spurs were the second best they would have gotten past okc

OKC was playing out of their minds then. I'd say they could beat anyone in the league at that level. But they couldn't sustain it. I tend to look at the regular season when deciding who's the best teams though because while the playoffs are more important 82 games is a lot longer than 7.

warriors easily outchoked the pats lol.

they lost 3 straight match point games while pats literally lost to an act of god.

"act of god"

:lol no. Tyree catch was amazing, yes, but the Giants dominated that game. Brady couldn't do anything against that D-line after he laughed at the notion that the Pats would only score 17 points.

Pats is the bigger choke. The Warriors should of lost in the western conference finals.

And the Giants were a wildcard team in 2007. Had to do it all on the road.

Nice try Pats haters, but 73-9 and up 3-1 and losing 3 straight (twice at home) is now the biggest choke job. Any NFL team can lose 1 game.

"Any Given Sunday!" does not excuse the choke. If it were an absolute truth they wouldn't have been undefeated going into the game.

It was one game for immortality, and they got crushed.

Greatest choke of all time.

Can't see anyone legitimately thinking that 18-1 is worse than being up 3 games to 1 in a Finals series and losing 3 in a row immediately after when you had homecourt advantage. Unless you don't watch basketball.

The Super Bowl is one game and miracles happen every now and then, but in the NBA you have a bunch of chances to recover after you lose in a series.

Also, Golden State had just come back from being down 3-1 to OKC the series before and had the same thing happen to them.

AND they were the first team in NBA finals history to blow a 3-1 lead. C'mon.

17-14 = crushed? Let the hate go. The Dubs got the crown now.

Bit of a random answer, but in the Australia Football League, my team Port Adelaide went through a really bad patch where we had amazing seasons and then choked in the finals.

2001: 16-6 (0-2 in the finals and knocked out)
2002: 18-4 (1-2 in the finals and knocked out)
2003: 18-4 (1-2 in the finals and knocked out)
2004: 17-5 (3-0 in the finals and champions at last)

Meanwhile the Brisbane Lions won the 2001-03 finals back-to-back-to-back.

The Warriors are going to be haunted by this loss for decades and Curry, especially, will be tarnished in any discussion of greatest basketball player ever. The Warriors choke job is easily the worst between them and the Patriots. Not even close.

I wonder how OKC feels about this loss, considering they were up 3-1 in the series and suffered the same fate.

73-9. Could have made history but they got cocky with 3 wins and lost to make the record for biggest comeback loss.

18-1 is great because fuck the patriots

18-1

Because the Pats will never live it down and got beat by the team people had near zero expectations of.

Plus I don't like the Pats/Tom Brady.

They're both equally pathetic choke jobs respective to their sport. You couldn't choke more than 18-1 in the NFL and you couldn't choke more than GSW did last night in the NBA.
