It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it

Just thought you guys might enjoy that cover image. Cuz it gives me major wood.

I haven't been following this stuff since after I beat HL2. Will Aftermath and Lost Coast be free or paid expansions?

EDIT: I see now that on Steam it says Lost Coast will be free. It doesn't say anything about Aftermath, which I assume means it will cost monies.

Che, if you really like Garry's mod you should've seen the original thread he made on Something Awful. Hilarious stuff.

Aftermath is an expansion pack. Ofcourse it's not gonna be free.

Excellent feature, Che. Stuff like this is what I wish more of the online media would do, more often. Big, detailed, features like this are probably the main reason why I still flip through print mags.

Yusaku, I've been in close contact with a bunch of the Garry's Mod geniuses out there. Some of the stuff is fucking insane. Do you have a link to the SA stuff?

On Wednesday, we've got an exclusive comic called Apostasy Zero, done by the guy who's doing the HL2: Apostasy graphic novel series -- he whipped up a little prequel action especially for my Garry's Mod article.

I guess the piece of the puzzle everybody wants to see is Friday's content, which is a 10 minute no-holds-barred Gabe Newell rant on Source, Steam, and next-gen shit.

Oh, and if anybody gives a shit about Half-Life 2 on Xbox, we've got 30 minutes of direct feed (probably not all of it) going up on Wednesday along with our Garry's Mod feature.

Gonna be a busy week indeed. :P

I hope they make changes to the combat in Aftermath. I found HL2's combat too boring.

Oh, and nice article, btw.

I'm not sure how much you can change shoot and kill. I thought grabbing sawblades and slicing zombies was fun.

If by boring you mean the AI wasn't dynamic enough, then yes I agree.

That's my biggest complaint about HL2 today.

There are those who swear by HL2's AI...and I just don't get it.

I guess I've been spoiled by Halo's combat. Things they could include to make it more enjoyable is weapon melee, higher jumping... You do have a point that my expectation might be unrealistic for such a specific shooter ('realistic might be somewhat appropriate.') But hey, since they have all sorts of aliens and technology, they might as well get something to speed up the combat. For instance, even as I play Darkwatch, which is obviously an inferior game, I feel its combat is better.

Edit: And yes Che, the AI contributed to it by being predictable, and just the same damn thing in every scenario.

Uhh, maybe you should just go play Halo 2 instead. Zero-grav isn't really apropriate in HL2, which is a little more grounded in reality.

Yes, and a gravity gun is grounded in reality... Hey, Master Chief has a suit that does this you know. :p

Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack the discussion, but I just feel it's such a pity HL2 doesn't have a much more interesting combat engine given how amazing is the rest of the game (ok, save for those loading screens every 5 minutes and the uninspired music.) I had to force myself to play the game in order to finish it, unlike most other games. Oh, and the gravity gun at the end of the game (last level) rocked. It definitely made the combat a heck of a lot more interesting.

Gravity gun makes sense. Having Gordon Freeman hop around like he's on the moon doesn't.

Oddly enough I'm the exact opposite of you. I seriously never a gave two shits about either Halo or Halo 2 single player. I find it incredibly bland and uninteresting. But that doesn't mean I wish Master Chief had a crowbar.

What's your point in being in this thread?

Well, no, he doesn't have to hop like a bunny, that was an example. Let's not go into too much Halo discussion as I don't want to derail this too much. I just cited the combat in Halo 2 because to me the AI/shield/melee/speed makes it much more dynamic and engaging. HL2 combat seems stuck somewhere between realism and unrealism (and I do enjoy somewhat realistic combat in some games) and the fact that they give you a gravity gun that makes it much more frustrating because, for 90% of the game, it feels like a wasted opportunity to make the combat shine. Psi-Ops had great physics based combat for example. HL2 also made the gravity gun worth a damn thing during the last chapter.

What's your point in being in this thread?

I think I made it clear I wondered about whether Valve would revamp the combat system in Aftermath, as I found it severely lacking in HL2. For the record, I liked HL2, but feel it would've been a much much better game if it had better combat mechanics.

schweet, I still want to know what's up with Cubbage
essentially why the fuck was he talking to gman shortly before u meet him?

Wow. I love that cover picture. Kudos to whoever came up with it. Excellent article, too.

I have had zero problems with Steam and I absolutely loved everything about HL2- artwork was phenomonal, combat, level design, story. I can't fucking wait to see where they are going with it.

For more about the cover image, go here

It isn't official Valve art, which is also what makes it so cool. :)

In the mag a caption says "A single light source illuminates all of Lost Coast: the sun." I call bullshit there. HDR does not equal global illumination.

Did you guys get to see Sin?

I know its not Valves game, but I figured they would be trying to bring attention to it.

Ok now I see Tuesday's video feature is Sin, sweet.

The videos with each article are really interesting, and it is good to see where valve believe they are going with the series and why they choose the things they did.
