2004 Gaming Stories

Let's look back at 2004, shall we?

I'm trying to avoid gaming stories like "such and such game was released and it's totally awesome and will change the face of gaming until the end of time". I'll let everyone else do that :)

Here are some of them, in no particular order:

Electronic Arts (NFL, DICE, Ubisoft, the "EA Spouse", Origin)
The PSP (launched in Japan for peanuts)
The Nintendo DS (announced in January, launched in November)
The PSTwo / the shortages
Halo 2 leaked
Acclaim declares Chapter 7 bankruptcy
Interplay closes
Gran Turismo 4 delayed / online play removed
JFK Reloaded
The Valve/Vivendi Powerstruggle
NEO-GAF (survived E3, brought down by PuzzleDonkey)
Blizzard dumps Nihilistic for Swingin' Ape for Starcraft: Ghost

Gotta go with EA, thier news stories are going to contiune to send shockwaves thoughout the indsutry for many years to come.

The top story I'd go with is actually a dual one: The DS/PSP handheld wars. That's the most interesting to me, anyway.

The DS/PSP Wars and the Take-Two/Sega deal are both good ones.
I'm waiting to see where the Resident Evil 4 story leads.

Ooh, I almost forgot:

Rumble Roses teaches us all to love again with the mad mud match.

A cruel and heartless world proves it has no room for an Xbox Nation.

Microsoft promises XNA will butter your toast.

The Phantom goes missing in action.

The EA stories are the most shocking. The next two are:

-Seeing Gamespot give MGS3 an 8.7>:(

-Seeing only 240K copies of MGS3 sold in America

I'm seeing people in Target talk about the EA buyout of the NFL license. Ok... MOTHERS are talking about this thing.

It really is the most significant news story this year; business wise and gaming wise. Awesome stuff.

And I'd throw is Halo 2's disappointment in there with stories... I haven't played it... but peeps seem mad disappointed about it.

And WoW's popularity has SHOCKED me.

Mothers are talking about the EA-NFL deal because they prefer ESPN NFL 2k6 at $19.99 to Madden NFL 2006 at $69.99.

EA slingin and slangin money everywhere... just in case there was any doubt who the biggest player in the video game business is.

Best ones:

1. Resident Evil 4 comes to PS2. (shit hits the fan)
2. The new Legend of Zelda
3. DS launches. (ahead only because of the U.S. launch preceeding the Japanese one)
4. PSP launches.
5. Reggielution.
6. Resident Evil 4 overhauled.
7. NFL lisence exclusive to EA.
8. Half-Life 2 leaks.
9. ilovebees
10. Iwata doesn't like Australians.
