and I hear the eco footprint is actually larger after manufacturing is taken into account. Could've just been an urban myth I overheard at a party...so I guess I'm asking now if it's true :D

I'm pro-hybrid, but what the fuck?

In the battle between Pris and Corolla, if gas shot up to even $4.50/gallon, and you drive 20,000 miles per year, you'll only "save" about $800 per year. There is about a $7000 price difference between the two, so it would take about 9 years to pay for itself -- and that's assuming that you drive quite a bit per year, that you don't have any costly repairs on the Prius because it's a relatively complex hybrid, and that gas is a whopping $4.50 per gallon. In nine years, the car will be up for retirement.

It also assumes that money doesn't have any future worth, which is false. If you invested the $7,000 into the general market, on average you'd have about $16,000 after 9 years. That's how much money you really need to save on gas with the hybrid to beat efficient combustion engines.

Not to mention the fact that you could very well blow $7,000 on luxuries and at least have something to show for it. :)

Even a compounded 2.5% interest rate in the bank would earn you about $1700 over a nine-year period.
