OK I just did commentary for the first three since the other albums are already well-known or explained by just about everyone.

01 I Janelle Monae I The Electric Lady

In her own words, Janelle defies every label. But her ability to seamlessly weave crazy sci-fi & modern stories with a flair for the dramatic and a funky revival of rhythm and blues is stunning. And she continues to refine her art in the Electric Lady by injecting a breath of much-needed fresh air into what it means to be a female artist. Her collaborations are top notch including a punchy and slick guitar led introduction with Prince and great tracks with both Erykah Badu and Miguel. I don't know if the Electric Lady will ever eclipse her stunning entrance with the Archandroid, but having given this album a lot of time over the past few months I think it is easily its equal in depth and shows a clear step forward in ability. The Electric Lady truly shows Janelle is moving forward with her vision and building upon her foundations every step of the way. Some of the stand-out tracks (really every single one is standout but here's a sample of my favorites): Dance Apocalyptic, Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, Ghetto Woman.

02 | CHVRCHES | The Bones of What You Believe

Just recently got into these guys via GAF recommendation. This album was a complete surprise to me as going in I didn't think I'd like it. They hit the number 2 spot for me because when I really sat down and give them a chance I realized they rock. They definitely have that 'really promising new band' vibe going on. Obviously some deep things going on in the lyrics behind some of their songs that I haven't reflected on yet but I enjoy their sound even on a surface level. Just another layer to explore in the future! Stand out track is definitely The Mother We Share.

03 | Fuck Buttons | Slow Focus

Another surprising GAF recommendation. I don't know what I would call their genre, as a layman in musical terminology I want to say kind of an ambient electronic industrial thing going on. But really great shit, kind of like an alternate dimension early Nine Inch Nails where a lyric-adverse Reznor went more perfectionist and abstract. Great music to chill or work to, very heavy electronic. Check out Stalker & Hidden XS.

It's gonna be tough for me to get 10. I listen to music almost all day but it's usually the same old stuff. I don't listen to very many different artists.

I'm the same way. I have the new Arcade Fire disc but it's FUBAR so I can't listen to it.

Okay, here it is. I'm not much of a music writer, but I added little descriptions for people unfamiliar with the artist. Click the album covers for a sample track.
I'll be doing plenty of tinkering before the year's end, the final version will probably be a full 25 albums.

01 | A$AP Ferg | Trap Lord
goofy, dark and mystical gangsta rap, fresh production and delivery from Ferg

02 | Drake | Nothing Was The Same
soulful pop rap with some killer hooks and one of the best singles of the year in Hold On, We're Going Home

03 | Kanye West | Yeezus
40 minutes raw sonic aggression, Kanye snapped

04 | The Weeknd | Kiss Land
bombastic alternative R&B with dramatic, MJ-esque vocals and synthy production

05 | A$AP Rocky | Long.Live.A$AP
swaggy cloud rap that delivers on the promise of Live.Love.A$AP, even if it doesn't quite surpass it

06 | Danny Brown | Old
a big and bold rap album, inventive and introspective on one side; rowdy and raunchy on the other, Danny's one of the stand-out MC's in the game right now

07 | Zomby | With Love
a double album of gothic trap soundscapes

08 | Toro Y Moi | Anything in Return
super smooth and funky love making music

09 | Teen Daze | Glacier
blissful, ambient electronic music, like a chillwave Eno

10 | Death Grips | Government Plates
not quite as brilliant as their first three releases, but a thrilling, mind-fucking listen regardless

11 | Travi$ Scott | Owl Pharaoh
scatterbrained and uneven, but the beats are infectious and loud, Scott's unconventional swag anthems have grown on me

12 | Suicideyear | Japan
dark and aggressive instrumental hip-hop

13 | Submerse | Algorithms and Ghosts
ethereal, sample-heavy instrumental beats

14 | Chance the Rapper | Acid Rap
chance's flow occasionally grates, but Acid Rap is an eclectic and promising debut

15 | Machinedrum | Vapor City
hypnotic electronica that ranges from drum & bass to downtempo to jungle and beyond

16 | Teengirl Fantasy | Nun
a short but sweet EP, like Teengirl's past work it feels both nostalgic and groundbreaking at the same time

wavy instrumental hip hop, the album title says it all

I need to post on Confession GAF. The minute I see Yeezus on anyone's list, much less in the top position, I ignore the entire thing.

I'm an awful person, and Yeezus is an awful album.

I do the same thing when I see Daft Punk or Arcade Fire at the top. No need to feel bad about it, you're not required to validate every opinion on the internet.

Well, it's almost guaranteed the top 3 in the tally will be 1. Arcade Fire, 2. Yeezus, 3. Vampire Weekend. sigh.

Popular music is popular. Who'da thunk it?!

I need to post on Confession GAF. The minute I see someone complaining about someone else's list, much less equating other's personal interest with bad taste, I lose respect for them.

I'm a reasonable person, and whining about music you don't like and insulting other's taste instead of talking about music you love and would like to support is an awful waste of time.

Sorry man. Peace & Love, brotha.

I'll admit a lot of my own taste is fairly generic and I don't see my number 1 breaking the top 10 overall (EVEN THOUGH SHE TOTALLY SHOULD). But I have walked away with a lot of cool recommendations outside what I've already heard smothering the radio, which is something I do appreciate GAF for. Would not have known about Fuck Buttons or Chvrches otherwise.

Instead of just saying "stop listing to X", "I'm tired of seeing X" how about "start listening to Y", "hey guys check out Y"

There was so much amazing music this year, I have to seriously sit down and think my list through. Although my #1 is pretty clear... Baths - Obsidian. By far my favorite album that's given me the most plays with 761 scrobbles on Last.fm. Such a beautifully haunting album.

Kinda surprised ctrl+f led me with no results for Baths. :(

Just made a Spotify playlist for Obsidian!

I liked his feature on Ryan Hemsworth's album, which might actually deserve a nod now that I think of it...

VW is going to win, as they should.
My favorite from last year was Bish Bosch and I can understand why that didn't win, but I think the best this year is a lot more accessible.

List forthcoming still, have stuff to listen to still before the year end.

All I gotta say is that metal and hardcore music put in some god damned work this year.

Big Black Delta's album came out in 2011. It was just re-released this year with a few extra tracks.

Yeah, but wasn't it initially released as a free EP? This year they've done extensive promotion and touring, at least, compared to what they did in '11 for the current version. I think it applies.

Haha that's going to be a great show. They are both fantastic live. Album is just so much fun. Every track is catchy as hell. They made a mistake with their band name because I think people are quick to write them off. Their music is basically the direction MGMT should've kept going after their first album

The name was an immediate turn off. But, I gave it a go and it wasn't quite bad. Seems like the two have similar sounds. It will be a nice cohesive show.

Might have to bump something off my list to make room for Toro y Moi. Listening to Anything in Return now and it is undeniably sexy.

@iiicon, Now that is a dem fine list. :)

Freakishly similar to what mine will be actually <_<
so obviously I can expect preferential treatment when it comes to collecting comments then :P

that list was hard to order. the first four are set, I think. Italians Do It Better have ruled my world the last two years, that new Knife album blows my mind, BoC put together a beautiful decayed record, and Koz is one of my favourite people in music. After that it's a bit of a mess.

I will make my list the next month, but for me this is the year of the disappointments. Thank god it's also the year of the surprises.

People who are upset VW might win are the same people who would have been complaining about how cliche it would be to pick Remain in Light and would have voted for Nurse With Wound if it were 1980.

We need another thread for the best songs of the year.

There weren't that many albums that I felt strongly about this year but there's tons of individual tracks that I absolutely love.
