Who's watched every game so far this WC?

I have, but I think I'm going to tap out for tomorrow's Swiss v. Ecuador game. I'm getting a severe lack of sleep and I'm falling behind on work. I'll still watch the Argentina and France games later that day. And I'll DVR the Swiss v. Ecuador game in case it turns out interesting.

I think the only game I really missed was Chile-Australia, I did watch parts of it but that doesn't really count. I will try to watch them all tho.

Watched then all, I'm on vacation now and I love me some soccer.

US has a chance of reaching 2nd spot.

But not if Portugal plays like this:

For teams like Japan and England that lost 2-1

How they make it to the second place of the group? They have to win the next two matches?

I've seen every game so far, but two of the three games tomorrow don't interest me in the slightest bit. I'll definitely watch Argentina/Bosnia, but I'm tapping out for the rest.

Depends on the rest of the group. It's possible to get out with a win and a tie, perhaps through goal differential. Honestly we won't know their way out until after the second set of games.

3 points for a win, 1 for a tie. Most points win. Goal differential determines tie breakers.
Who ever has the most goals right? Then if thats tied who ever received the least amount of goals correct? Imagine a group where every game played ends 0-0. I wonder how they would decide that.

From wiki:

The ranking of teams in each group is based on:
1. Points in all group matches
2. Goal difference in all group matches
3. Goals scored in all group matches
4. Points in matches between tied teams
5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
6. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
7. Drawing of lots

I think the last one means just having a draw to see who makes it through?

Yep. It happened in 1990 with France and Netherlands, I believe. I don't remember who won it.

So if you are Italy would you rather Colombia or Ivory Coast in the round of 16? That is if they make it out of the group. I didn't watch the Ivory Coast game. Colombia looked pretty good.

Just looking ahead at possible scenarios. If Netherlands wins the group and Italy wins their group and they both win their round of 16 matchups, we would see a Dutch vs Italy quarters. Hold me. This is an entirely likely possibility really. On paper at least.

I have either watched or listened to (on the radio at work) to every game so far! I don't intend to miss any. Tomorrows games don't look super exciting, but who knows. I thought Costa Rica vs. Uruguay would be the most boring game of the bunch today and it was the opposite. Anything can happen!

So far I've at least seen parts of every game. I was with a girl at a restaurant and while I went to the bathroom I also checked out the ivory coast game for a minute or two.

That was the most I've missed of any game so far. The rest I pretty much saw all of.

Not saying it's wrong, just curious. You don't see many people rooting for a different national team btw, so it's interesting to learn the why. Tell me more.

Been catching up on this thread and wanted to answer this. I'm Mexican but support the German team. Just love the way they play. Dat teamwork, dat skill. It's been fun rooting for them the past two world cups (2002 was my first cup. Was rooting for Mexico and Japan then. Germany caught my eye then)

I have a love/hate for Mexico which leans to the hate side often times. Just been disappointed with them too much. Lol

That's the exact opposite of how Japan lose.

They usually have the most possession, but when they give it up the other team scores on nearly every counter attack. Their passing was just completely shit today.

It is a pretty useless stat, and when they play well it seems like they have the control of the game. But in 2010 they had the lowest possession% of any team in the competition.

They didn't lose because of it though, you are right. But I think it is risky. They seem to get the first goal and then are on the back foot for the rest of the game defending.

World Cup 2010

Netherlands v. Japan 63% - 37% 1-0
Japan v. Cameroon 44% - 56% 1-0
Denmark v. Japan 62% - 38% 1-3
Paraguay v. Japan 60% - 40% 5-3 PSO

That's good to hear. Hopefully the rest of the tournament continues to be great.

I don't even remember the first WC I watched.

The Swiss ain't a bad team and it will be interesting seeing them against a pacey and physical Ecuadorian team.

Fra v Hon could be a shock result (I hope) it feels like this WC has a lot more to come.

Dat concaf.

Haha no. Maybe against the lower ranked teams in qualifying, but against top tier teams they always get destroyed in possession.

Japan basically scores goals off the odd counter attack, and set pieces. They are great in set pieces.

I was disappointed by Japan's game but absolutely not surprised, it was totally on par with what I was expecting after watching them on a constant basis for the last few years.

It boils down to a few, fairly clair-cut problems if you ask me:
- They can't defend for their life. Central defense has been abyssmal all year and the positionning on counters left me wondering more than once what the fuck they were doing;
- Honda and especially Kagawa are very hit-and-miss. The latter was transparent today, not to say complete shit. Honda was good, but it's far from always being the case;
- They never do shit with the ball. They struggle to build decent plays and miss simple passes all the time;
- The team has a whole really seems to have a morale problem. They will ALWAYS drop the ball in a major way at some point;
- Kawashima just isn't good enough anymore. The problem is that I'm not sure there's any JP goalie fundamently better than him and he's a big presence for the team.

I wanted to believe and tried hard to convince people this group was totally doable for Japan despite my growing concerns. Today's game put a serious dent in that belief...
I'll keep supporting them until the end though.

Every team is bound to have a year or two like this. The Italians couldn't make it out of the group last time, now they're looking pretty good. You guys may not be so hot this time around, but it's nothing you can't fix by 2018.
