2014 Microsoft E3 Conference

I thought the conference was pretty boring Platinum and SO aside.

It might have been alright if they didn't have those annoying shills cheering every time they announced timed DLC.

Sucks Black Tusk showed up, and nothing. Was slightly hoping Spencer green lit that game they were working on again. Guess they're just their for other business.

Look guys and gals, I was at the conference. Obviously to see these games live is a different experience than streaming. I also got a chance to talk to Phil, Chris Charla, Larry, Ted Price, etc afterwards and really listen to them interact with everyone.
What got me excited so much was listening to their candor when they spoke about what drives them. They are all legitimately excited and passionate about the past, present and especially the future.

As far as the games lineup, Sunset Overdrive is a stand out. It looks and plays amazing and has 8 player co-op. Forza Horizon 2 looked crazy fun . I sat near a couple of the Playground Games guys and I will be getting a special demo wed. I also sat right next to the creator of Threes and he said how amazing Chris Charla is and how MS made it so easy to get his game on the system. Halo collection is straight up the bargain of the century.
Would I have liked to see more for 2014? Yes. Would I have liked to see some more killer exclusives? Yes. Am I satisfied with what I did see? Hell yes. Phil told me that they're not done yet announcing things this year and Gamescom and the Japanese launch will have some announcements.
I am stoked to see MS is back to focusing on games. I am excited for Sony's conference which i'm waiting to get in and I am super excited to get my hands on the games tomorrow, Wednesday and thursday.

Btw anyone doubting I was there, I'm uploading images from the event tonight. Here's a couple from the panel after the show. http://imgur.com/a/J5nM2

The more I think about this conference the more I realize how great it was. I just think some of the hype was deflated because of some of the leaks. But still it was a really strong showing by MS.

IP check time!

So, avoid people and internet all day at work, get home, drink beer and watch this on twitch. Thought they did an excellent job getting people excited for games. Was disappointed by some CG trailers, and wanted some better surprises. Still though, they are putting up a good fight. I kinda want a bone just for all the Halo shit.

My $0.02 - Solid conference with a good lineup of varied games. Unfortunately, the best ones were third party games with the exclusives either being stuff we know about or CG "Concept" trailers. Why wasn't Halo 5 shown in more detail? The platinum game looks to be a very long way off and imho looked very meh. Surely they could have shown some Halo 5 gameplay instead.

The conference was a solid B+ but felt it missed something to push it over. A Rare IP would have done it for me. Very disappointed that MS is still sitting on all those great IPs. Even if Rare doesnt make it.

As someone who has a ps4 and was already enticed with Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2, I really didn't see anything to sway me further. The Halo collection looks awesome for Halo fans which I'm not. The Platinum game doesn't interest me. Crackdown might be interesting but I need gameplay.

Kudos for 100 percent games tho.

Best stuff for me was the indie games....too bad those don't count for some people here, but they sure as hell count for me.

It was all about the games but as someone who has yet to feel the need to buy an Xbox one. I just don’t feel that conference made me want to go out and buy the console. I was hoping for that big final game reveal to close the show and it turn out to be crackdown 3, while some people find it incredible is just not for my liking. I saw a lot of CG and third party games that will end up looking better on my PS4. They did get a lot of time DLC if you like that sort of thing. This was the time for MS to strike back and to me they played it safe. In my personal opinion they did not deliver to give me a reason to buy an Xbox one for someone who already has a PS4…

Have to agree with most opinions here: good conference overall, but not enough to push Xbones. Better than last year in terms of impact, but they're lacking the big hits needed to move consoles.

All the multiplatforms are going to look and run better on the PS4. The many CGI trailers just reminded me over and over that the Xbone really doesn't have a whole lot, and the constant multiplayer bombardment reinforced that I am simply not the target audience for the Xbone.

Anyone else feel like they might have cannibalised next year's E3, with so many early trailer reveals?

I know a lot of Halo fans were soured by Halo 4. Like Half of HaloGAF ended up getting PS4's or were undecisive. I know a bunch of them claimed if H2 anni had untouched MP they would get it, but now that it has MP from 4 Halo titles? Good lawwwddd.

You best bet they converted some old Xbox fans back.

Sunset Overdrive looked cool. But as a big Halo fan MC collection stole the show. Curious what sony has up their sleeve.

It's only $60 with over 100 maps like WTF

I would rate the conference a 7/10.

They definitely delivered on the promise of games, games and games. But for me it was a missed opportunity, showing so many multi platform games doesn't make me more excited for a platform I haven't got if I have another platform that I can run them on.

I was also surprised by the lack of that killer exclusive game, especially after all the talk of "massive 3rd party exclusive"... no ME, Fallout, Rainbow 6... (not that I expected the first two).

So solid, snappy and much better than previous conferences, but lacking on any killer blow. Not that I expect Sony to not feature 3rd party games heavily.

Mind explaining it then?

Chief is a wandering nomad, probably trying to (once again) find Cortana. Probably fell out with the UNSC, Dr. Halsey teamed up with some radical alien group called the Storm and is scheming to collect more Forerunner bling. There's a new spartan dude who has connections with the Arbiter and is searching for/hunting down the Chief.

6/10.

It was competent, showing lots of games, but it didn't make me wanna go out and buy an Xbone. The most interesting titles for me are available on other platforms. I was hoping for some megaton exclusives. Real exclusives. Not timed/exclusive DLC things.

I thought the conference was pretty average (though that was probably due to all of it being leaked 5 months ago), but Halo and Sunset Overdrive have made E3 for me.

While a lot of first party stuff isn't coming til 2015 (Sony is seemingly having the same issues), the Xbox team's demonstrated again and again that they know they screwed up and have taken a positive, player-oriented approach.

Focusing on games was pretty awesome. Nothing mind blowing that would convince me to buy an XOne this year if I didn't already have one. But, as someone who already does, I was as happy as I expected to be (maybe a little more since I was only expecting Halo 2 not the full collection we're getting).

Hearing people come out of judges week saying that the big stuff might not be coming until 2015 tempered my expectations.

Do they? I thought that E3 was mostly followed by enthusiast gamers. The mainstream just read up on the news later on sites like IGN.

Considering I've been watching E3 since like 2005, and have only been a member of gaf for less than a year. I'd have to say that most people that watch E3 are not a member of gaf. I believe there were upwards of 50,000 people at E3. That's almost half of gaf right there. Let alone the people that stream, or watch on TV. That adds up. This article says that there were over 10 million people watching online in 2011.

You are right though. E3 is for gaming enthusiasts.

The big problem with the conference was we knew all these games were coming. So when you know what the surprises are the footage better be really impressive to get the hype train rolling. Instead the best thing at the conference which has been the best thing of any MS conference since I got a OG Xbox was Halo.

Too bad Suda 51 was not on stage, maybe Nintendo?

He rarely seems to attend E3, but he may show up at Tokyo Game Show this year. We know he's working on a PS4 title called Lily Bergamo, but the developer is capable of simultaneously co-developing smaller downloadable games such as Sine Mora and Black Knight Sword.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can`t please all the people all of the time!?

It was great. Everything most of us always wanted. They just showed their game line up. I like how they left the PR to prepared PR statements prior few weeks. MS pre Phil would've spent an hour showing you the new apps, mostly media ones. Talking about media partnerships. Showing a glimpse of new achievement app in snap.

They would've then wasted all our time with $400 sku announcement and changes to XBL. Like the MS points going away last year. Big whop! that is all stuff that helps them and should've already happened. Again waste of time for this format.

Instead they did the right thing and left announcements for the PR prior to E3. Hope this is a new trend. Well played. If you don't like their lineup don't hate on the format. Easily best format we could ask for. They simply showed what is in their pipeline for 2014 & 2015 that they could show.

It was boring. Don't know why people are saying the pacing was great, it was trailer after trailer and pointless chatter between devs. They had to break it up every now and again and showcase something. Show something new, new hardware or software features, make a big deal about the new price, get people on stage moving to a kinect game.....anything but drones coming out with controllers.

The only thing that raised an eyebrow was the sunset overdrive trailer, but all hope faded away when they showed the gameplay.

That and people were waiting for the megaton that would have shaped the entire narrative of this E3.
Problem is this isn't 2008, there aren't any big exclusive 3rd party franchises to steal from Sony, or any multiplatform franchises that would benefit from going Xbox 1/PS4 exclusive. Fallout was never going to happen.

I agree with everyone that the leaks and early announcements took away much of the impact of the conference, but in the end it's about the games that will be released not the wow factor for a press briefing.

MS looks to have a pretty amazing lineup over the next 2-3 years, even if we knew about many of the titles headed into E3.

My beef as well. I had expected that one Oh my God! moment, and it never came! Very tepid showing from start to end. In terms of content, their last year conference is better...

Sunset overdrive looks good but I doubt it will receive critical acclaim.

Phantom dust, Scalebound and Crackdown all displayed CGI trailers.

What the hells so exciting about the Halo Master Chief collection? Playing recycled games is just a bore.

Forza 5 looks great if you are into Racing game and Inside looks very intriguing.

Also, there wasn't any true gameplay for Halo 5.

The rest were just Multi-platform games.

No Gears of War, Quantum Break break or any compelling new Intellectual Property.

It was a satisfactory conference but not great. Jeez, some of you people need to get your head out of Microsoft's ass and articulate some constructive criticism for once.

I ran into many people offline who doubted the validity of the leaks. Some even put down this very forum.

I kinda think that ntkrnl should've stopped his leaked with the sunset overdrive stuff. There was no need to throw Platinum and crackdown in there. That kinda ruined any surprise

Only Horizon because Crackdown didn't show squat other than yup its coming

This is my first time watching live streaming another conference beside Nintendo's. Microsoft's is jam-packed with games as they promised. Kinda expected they stop a bit to talk about XBone but that never happened.

Too bad I'm not too interested in most of the games (except the indie games, they're really cool), though, or the games I'm interested in are multiplat for PC anyway. But hey, good value for those who have Xbone already.

Your arguments are an example for all.

Can't wait for more news about the PG game and Phantom Dust, hope we will not have to wait until next year to learn some more about the gameplay etc.
