they're still angry about firefly because sci-fi fans are very poorly adjusted

But I like some sci-fi stuff! Oh shit, I just proved your point, didn't I?

Cancelling Firefly and Dollhouse just gave Whedon the push to make those two Avengers masterpieces *snicker* so it's almost like Fox did him a favor.

I can think of a number reasons which would start at Firefly and ends at Almost Human. I'm quite convinced people are now doing more a "I'll start watching it at the second season approach" which of course causes a cycle.

It's not like people are watching sci-fi shows in large numbers anywhere, are they?

Sci-fi is pretty dead on television.
They kinda watched Revolution, at least for the first season. But that is easily explained by it being terrible. And The 100 will probably end up being higher than Minority Report's following episode. 12 Monkeys, Humans, Dark Matter, Doctor Who and Orphan Black are more small-scale, but they also get renewals. FOX just seems to want to make sci-fi happen in a way; but they do it with such budgets that they have to give up immediately.

Eh, people always posit this but I think the number of people who actually hold off on things they are interested in because it might get canceled are a tiny and thus largely irrelevant portion of the audience.

Most people don't take television that seriously, and personally I'll watch anything that seems good even if it's a lost cause ratings-wise. I'd rather have seen 13 episodes of a Wonderfalls than none at all.

I don't think the philosophy of "I'm not going to watch sci-fi shows on Fox because they always cancel every sci-fi show ever" is one that exists outside of a small niche on the internet.

I like Minority Report, it's no Scorpion but it shows potential.

Well that's a phrase I never thought I'd see.

I mean I watched the first season of Scorpion and it was okay but it never reached the point where it could be used as a benchmark for anything else.

Sci fi fans are an easy target because of Firefly but let's not pretend that there isn't a portion of the general TV viewing audience that loses their shit any time any show gets cancelled. Community fans managed to embarrass themselves for years for example. Then you have all the 'campaigns' to save the show which involve carpet bombing studios with all kinds of useless junk. I don't think TV viewers generally handle the inevitable churn of shows very well at all.

The snickers really do satisfy.

Dollhouse > Firefly, but both Avengers were so generic....

Muppets continues to plummet, down to a 1.6 from a 2.0. Best Time Ever dropped hard, too, from 1.9 to 1.3. Grandfathered and The Grinder no longer look viable, although maybe 1.1 is the average rating for Fox shows now, Empire notwithstanding, haha. Limitless and Agents of SHIELD still look OK, dropping just 0.2 and 0.1, respectively.

[edit] Oh and The Flash premiered with a pretty good 1.4! Its debut was a 1.9 last year.

How is Scream Queens doing in the L+3?

I know those were the numbers FOX was trying to say would be more positive after the debut

As much as Fox wants them to, L+3s reeeeally don't matter, but just for fun, here was Fox's press release about last week's Scream Queens:

Fox said:
Week two of SCREAM QUEENS gained +64% from Live + Same Day to Nielsen’s Live + 3s among Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 > 2.3/7) – a higher percentage gain than its premiere in L3 (59%) -- and was up +74% with Women 18-34 (1.9/7 > 3.3/11).
  • SCREAM QUEENS was Tuesday’s highest-rated scripted series among Women 18-34 and Female Teens and continues to rank as the #1 new show among Teens.
  • With all platforms factored in, SCREAM QUEENS averaged an audience of 5.7 Mil in 3 Day Multi-Platform Audience -- a +64% increase versus Live + SD (3.5 Mil).

iZombie is pretty much a consistent performer. Middling for The CW, but I see them keeping with it.

Yeah, if it stays in the 0.7 range it'll be fine. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually move it somewhere else to use the Flash lead-in to launch a new show.

The most interesting CW ratings this week are going to be the Thursday ones. I'm waiting to see how Vampire Diaries sans Dobrev does.

Yeah, I could see that

Or do half iZombie/half a spring show with The Flash lead-in

Think it could also work if paired with Supernatural or Vampire Diaries

I feel like the people that would drop off that show dropped it already before that, if not just switched to The Originals when it started being a lot better.

I'm slightly surprised by The Flash's numbers. While there is no doubting that it's excellent (besting anything on Fox by a healthy margin) I think I bought into the fan hysteria that this could second season could debut to a 1.8 (or higher!!) in the demo.

The Muppet death spiral doesn't surprise me. This always struck me as a desperate move by Disney to do something (nay ANYTHING!) with the Muppets IP since they bought it. In saying that if the show does solid sales in the International market and it doesn't sink below a 1.2 or whatever I can see Disney keeping it around.

And Fox's Tuesday line up continues to baffle me. Why are they pairing two comedies that star male actors in their fifties with a Ryan Murphy series that's clearly aimed at a young female audience? I can see their entire Tuesday night line up sinking below a 1.0 in the demo soon enough.

Fresh Off the Boat beating The Muppets now? Who's leading who?

The problem is that by going more adult Muppets has scared away the kids and family-friendly crowd, and the critics have repeatedly beaten up on it because it doesn't feel like the Muppets.

It doesn't help that it's funny but not hilarious. I'm not necessarily turned off by the change in tone, but I don't think the quality is really there.

I watched the first two episodes, but quite happily turned back to Flash tonight, and forgot to even record Muppets.

I'd assume

1)It's the CW's limited reach
2)Them not putting up season 1 until day of... like do it a week before. Give people time to binge!

Exactly they should go up the day after the season finale. Are reruns that important? I need to start on Flash

It's less about reruns and more about getting that blu-ray/DVD sales... which I don't get why those can't come out in the summer.

Release it in July/August
Put up a show on streaming month before season premiere.

Yeah, I'm honestly not too worried about iZombie. That's decent enough, and the show can't be that expensive compared to the other genre shows on The CW.

Is there a particular reason that all those CW shows are added to Netflix literally the day that the new season premieres? Yeah, they want to give the DVD sales time, but they didn't even get the iZombie DVD out until September 29th. It must have to do with some agreement they have, because that arrangement can't be by choice. People that are perpetually behind on their shows because they wait for it to show up on Netflix. If they had time to catch up, they might watch it live with the new season.

I could have sworn the one year, 24 got its DVD out the week after the season finale.

The movie wasn't a huge hit though, it shares no actors with the movie, and it is a science-fiction show on FOX. The majority of the audience for a science-fiction show doesn't watch when it is on FOX.

Literally everyone I know who loves sci-fi is anxiously waiting for FOX to launch The X-Files Season 10. Nobody watched Minority Report because nobody wanted it to begin with.

Goodness these ratings for FOX are terrible o.o

Who's in charge of their programming schedule?

Anywho, CBS continues to be a programming beast - those are solid numbers giving the current climate.
