2024 Gaming Predictions

With us being in 2024, what are your predictions for the new year? Some of mine are:
Epic releases Fortnite on Steam
More acquistions from Sony, less so MS this year to cool off from AKB
New reveals from multiple PS Studios- Asobi, Bluepoint, Housemarque, Sucker Punch, Bend, Santa Monica and Naughty Dog will all reveal stuff to counter AKB and the GAAS pivots
Switch successor releases in Fall in 2 models; one with an OLED screen for $449 and one without for $349
NSO+ announced for Switch successor adding Gamecube, Wii and DS games
Ocarina of Time remake announced for 2025
GOTY is hard fought between FF VII Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma 2, Metapho in respectable 3rd
Sony buys a Japanese publisher

Of course not solely PS5 games. Some PS4 only titles and a good chunk of cross-gen titles mixed in.

  • Without being a Fortnite level huge hit, Helldivers 2 performs good enough at launch window to be acquired by Sony
  • Square Enix branches out some of their studios as subsidiary companies to turn some of them a joint ventures with external investors (the main one being Sony) who would own a minority of some of them
  • Sony signs more deals with Asian studios (examples could be Pearl Abyss, Com2uS, Neowiz) to mostly chase the Asian mobile or PC markets
  • Sony releases PS+ Cloud gaming on smartphones, tablets, smart tvs and PS Portal. PS+ required, allows you to play outside their console the PS+ Games and Classic Catalogs but also some digitally bought PS5 titles
  • Sony announces new Uncharted, Cory's next game, Team Asobi's next game plus GoT PC port on a May/June showcase
  • Switch 2 releases with a $399 price featuring a new 3D Mario, Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4 in their launch window
  • MS and recently acquired publishers and studios continue releasing new and old games on PS5 and Nintendo, but also keep some new releases as Xbox (secretly timed) console exclusives
  • Sony counters the ABK acquisition with a yawn: PS keeps breaking gaming history records and continues eating Xbox market share
  • More PC brands announce their handheld PC

  • Dragon Age Dreadwolf will release later this year. It will be okay, but it won't garner the same level of success as Inquisition. Some players won't like changes and direction introduced by the developers
  • Switch successor will be announced in the first half of this year and will release in the second half of 2024. The console will be backwards compatible with Switch 1
  • Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines 2 will launch this year and will be big flop - general consensus from players will be lukewarm, fans of the original will hate it and new players who will like it will be in rather small numbers, resulting in weak sales. This will be the last AAA RPG published by Paradox in a long while
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will be one of this year's underdogs, while Suicide Squad and Skulls and Bones will be underwhelming
  • CD Projekt will announce the next The Witcher game this year, with plan of releasing it in late 2025. The game will have a new character and be a start of the new series
  • Warner Bros will announce a new LEGO Harry Potter game which will be an equivalent of The Skywalker Saga covering the entire series from The Philosopher's Stone up to The Deathly Hallows
  • Bethesda will announce Oblivion remaster later this year
  • Embracer will announce yet another collection of Tomb Raider remasters, this time including The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness
  • Spyro 4 will be announced this summer and release in the second half of 2024
  • Valve will release a big update for Half-Life: Opposing Force for Steam Deck in November
  • This year's Betheda's FPS remaster will be a collection of Hexen and Heretic games

The first two GAAS games out of PlayStation (Helldivers 2 + Concord) will both be successful. Concord moreso.

The people who said "GAAS is all luck and almost all of PlayStations Live Service games will fail", will begin searching for a new narrative.

Those are the only two I'm confident in.

Resident Crybaby
  • Hellblade II emerges as Xbox's first true GOTY caliber title
  • Switch 2 releases in Fall of 2024 with a 3D Mario game in it's launch lineup
  • PS5 Pro releases in Fall of 2024 with a surprisingly high price tag of $699. Aimed to compete with mid/high end gaming PCs and is a very significant spec bump over base PS5; much more significant that the PS4 Pro was over the base PS4
  • EA announces Dead Space 2. The game will divert much more from the original compared to the Dead Space 1 remake.
  • Microsoft announces a new Banjo Kazooie game at their big Summer showcase
  • Sony announces acquisition of Square Enix
  • Capcom announces their newest RE remake, Resident Evil. Will combine RE0, RE1, and RE:CV into one game.

I don’t think Nintendo are interested in Game Cube and Wii games on NSO

A. Due to the app sizes ballooning as games are added

B. These games are ripe for ‘easy’ HD touch up remasters (Pikmin 1&2, WW, TP etc) which can be sold at full price.

I predict a dry year for big releases, with people trying to hype up some stale remasters and mediocre new games. There will be more controversy about big new releases using AI generated content, but it will all just be hot air. GTA6 will be delayed to 2026.
