Those Mario Party numbers are surprising. I was expecting much lower due to Switch/Mario Party fatigue. Glad to see a good effort go rewarded.

I don't buy the narrative of low stock in Japan. Ps5 is readily available in all major markets. There are hundreds of thousands been stripped of usa numbers since last year. So they've either cut production considerably or more stock should be freed up for other regions.

It just doesn't make sense for it to be in constraint this far into its life with 0 covid.

Exports do continue for the Switch tho.

I remember a few years ago where there were many users that called bullshit on stock being exported to China, although everyone knew it was happening.

The PS5 will drastically fall behind PS4 in Japan if Sony doesn't do something.

Buying a PS5 in Japan to resell it on other regions at this moment doesn’t make sense, is too expensive. Before, yes.

Nice to see evergreens like Pikmin 4, Kirby ATFL and Taiko still chugging along.

Mario party series is a behemoth in Japan and it's safe to say that Mario Party has replaced Final Fantasy series in term of sales relevancy in that country.

We will never know how much it affected it there. There's a possibility even with those extra sales it still falls behind the PS3, but it would have to stall at this rate for a long time.

Whilst the yen was super weak for so long and before the price cut the hardware sales were booming, as was foreign tourism and so there must have been people snagging them for way less than they could in their own countries.

Prior to the price cut the digital PS5 was ¥59,980 and disc ¥66,980. Both around £100 cheaper thant they would cost in the UK or Europe.

As soon as they increased the price and took away that discrepency the sales have absolutely cratered. Sure this is expected, but the drop looks to be significant.

Couple that with how low PS5 software sales are (I think the highest selling game is FF7 Rebirth which last tracked at around 350k physical copies sold, so maybe around 500-600k with digital), it's just a big gulf between that and the hardware total.

I'm a Sony Pony, so I'd like to see the PS5 sell like crazy in Japan and the software too, but something don't add up! I've been following Famitsu threads since the early PS3 days way back in the 2000s and you would get 1mil+ selling software then and plenty between 400k-1mil. Now you get games like Silent Hill 2 and Astro Bot struggling to get to 50-100k.

According to yesterday's live broadcast with Yokoyama from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the Switch version of "Yakuza Kiwami" has sold much better than expected.

FF16 is the highest game sold game on PS5 (with a physical release). Could be at around 800,000 with digital.

Them having stupidly low expectations is probably why it took them so long to bring the series over.

Current best sellers on Amazon JP for PS5 and Switch games (ignore the prices as I use € because it's easier for me to shop on Amazon JP).
