First off, if this post at all breaks the TOS, I apologize in advance and hope it can be locked and even removed without much incident. But I figured I'd spread some good news...
This past weekend was Retro Redux, 24 hour game jam that was organized by Parsons here in New York City and Atari. Students had just one single day to create a fully playable game for Atari's Flashback game console, which as most of you might already know is based upon the classic 2600 enviroment. Teams from schools all across the greater NYC area, from Parsons to NYU, were in attendance, and I was on-hand as an advisor to the SVA team; we called ourselves the "Pixel Pirates." 24 hours of grueling, dedicated work, produced the game Bull Run!
And last night was the award ceremony, in which our game won the award for Best Visual Design! You can check out the sweet award, which is a real working 2600 controller...
For more info on the event, keep any eye out for my report for in Gamasutra coming out soon (I just started writing for them). Meanwhile, the New York Times to running a story in their Arts & Leisure section tomorrow (Wednesday morning).
And for those interested in playing it, you can do so here. Some things to know:
- You move with the left and right arrow keys.
- To score points, you must gore people by positioning yourself right behind them and pressing the action button (the space bar). Timing is key; if you do it too late, or if youre not directly behind them, theyll just leap out of the way.
- Goring people will earn you points; each level has a point criteria which must be met to advance to the next level.
- Avoid obstacles in the way. Run into them too many times and its game over.
And again, if this act of self-promotion is not kosher, I do apologize.
