2D games on consoles: Making a comeback?

With the success of handheld gaming, particular from the 2D titles, and the foreseeable success of Revolution’s downloadable games, do you predict that more developers will focus on establishing more 2D game franchises for consoles in the next-generation and not shoot their entire load on 3D games altogether?

Hopefully there'll be a few more sucesses like The Behemoth, and online flash games become the new form of garage game developement, but realistically, not gonna happen.

As much as I would like to see it, no.
It's sad because 2D has far more graphical detail than 3D currently. It allows the developer to get right into every pixel and make each one count, and you can get some visual styles that would be impossible/too hard to bother with in 3D. The indie gaming scene is a nice promoter of 2D, though ofteh they're too rushed and lack attention to detail.

Well, 2D gaming shouldn't be isolated to platforms alone. Look at real-time strategy games and top-view adventure games like Diablo 2. There's so much untapped potential there.

Treasure is the only one that is pushing for console based 2D games, such as Gradius V, and the next gen 2D game treasure said is coming to X360.

I don't think most companies even have sprite artists anymore...
It doesn't have to be a whole shitload of companies, but some of them DO exist...Sammy, AIS, and other RPG (2D) developers.

I hope 2D comes back more, but it never really left in my case since I play a lot of handhelds and old systems. Haha I was also slow to come around to 3d anyway always arguing with my brother about how you couldnt see shit in 3d games. Unfortunately I think with 3d becoming so much more refined is a gonna hurt that though since people like me will be more accepting. Regeardless, good clean graphics of any kind are good in my book. :)

I would fully support a new cartridge based, powerful 2D hardware.

In a world where GTA and Need For Speed rules, Castlevania DS made me remember why I liked video games before.

That's what I think is going to happen. You'll see Flash and Java being used more for 2D games, for things like puzzle games, boards games, and card games on Web sites. Cell phones and PDAs will still have a lot of 2D games, since many of them don't have really good control arrangements for playing intense 3D action games.

Other than that, most of 2D games of the future will be the 2D games of the past, being recreated or emulated on current platforms. We've already seen some great compilation discs, but the Internet could also be used to deliver classic 2D games. If something like GameTap or the Revolution's downloadable classic game library concept takes off, you could see a lot of the great 2D games being exposed to new audiences for many years to come.

I say it's very possible... especially since I predict around the middle of this gen developers will be looking for different ways to deliver games visually wether it be through new ways of shading or whatever.

The problem with 2D gaming is just the recycling. Capcom have been recycling the same 2D sprites for 15 years, SNK for 15+ and now Sega is now recycling GG sprites and creating small updates to the franchise.

If anything is going to resurrect 2D gaming it has to be that one major publisher like Capcom, Sega or Nintendo is willing to take the financial plunge and create true next gen "HD2D" games.

I'm talking about bringing HD quality sprites

Animation that surpasses street fighter 3 or metal slug 3

and no cut corners by using CG backgrounds

Will this happen? maybe...

But i predict 2.5D gaming will be the obvious choice in bringing "2D gaming" back.

Make some high poly cel shaded characters in a high poly cel shaded environment, use 2.5D gameplay... that's a logical step since it wont take as much money compared to make 2D sprites on the anime level.

I don't see why would revolution give a rise to 2D games.

even Nintendo develop 3D games on DS.

there are some 2D games on DS I believe mainly because of the small screen and low resolution.

there could be a come back of 2D games if and only if they are significantly cheaper.

I agree with Jesiatha, yes more 2D games, but not given a large developement team, mainly fun little diversions rather than all encompassing games.
