it's a great tool for like-minded people to easily find each other....even better...we'll know who the asshats are and avoid contact with them

you'll also be able to tell how much effort people put into games as well... do they play 2 levels in or do they master the game completely?

okay...maybe i don't want people to know that.

in the end this is gonna help MS, there's a shitload of marketing DATA to be gathered from this syetm which they can in turn sell to other pubs...

wait....that doesn't sound right....

Yeah that sounds right, but you forget the biggest positive of this, it helps us a online gamers.

I think it sounds cool. Kinda like the equivalent to an online record for those of us who still love a good single-player game.

I wonder how this system would work for non-competitive online games? Would something like Phantasy Star Universe be forced to have features that didn't suit the title in order to please Microsoft?

What about system users that only like certain genres? Gamer cred might be hard to come by if you're mainly playing non-competitive games.

The idea sounds good on paper, but I'm afraid that this is going to turn some of the people into rank whores.

i think what microsoft is implying is that if your title have a ranking system... you must also have a casual play area so that people aren't immediately thrown into rankwhoring jackasses (ie halo2 as an example)

So there is probably some games which don't have a rank system... so it doesn't need a casual play area

all in all it sounds good but there's still that sting of being used for marketing-data. hefully there is an opt-out on data gathering and sharing when you transtiion to this next rev of LIVE

Ugh. Gamer cred. Fucking lame.

As if there aren't enough assholes on Live without giving them more firepower, just 'cos mommy buys them more games than I could ever possibly afford.

If your paying a monthly fee you would hope they allow you to opt out of the data gathering... but somehow I doubt it.

I'll speculate that they'll probably give you the option to opt out of sharing your data with other players... but I find it hard to imagine they'll stop collecting your game data if you leave your xenon hooked up to the internet with a LIVE account.

I got to see some of the new online center stuff and its pretty spiffy.

I think we're gradually moving to a point where the online environment is the platform, and the console is just a delivery device.

Except not everyone (perhaps not even a majority, judging by the small number of XBOX live subscribers compared to the overall XBOX userbase) will want, need, desire or even be set up for online gaming...

Some people just want to plug in the console, buy some software and play cool games....

They haven't even gotten that far with PC games. I don't know of a single high profile game on the horizon (other than some type of HL2 expansion that we'll probably hear about at E3) that is going to be offered through an online download instead of just a regular retail box. All of the other games that do it now make money on some type of monthly subscription charge per game.

I'm just saying we're incrementally moving in that direction. More integrated offline and online stuff next gen, and then probably a primarily online platform the gen after that.

btw:

Major Nelson interviewed J. Allard.

"We're going a little bit of what the Xenon user interface might look like tomorrow. We're going to talk a little bit about the specs. And we're going to talk a lot about online as well and where we see the future as well."

If you guys read the article and saw what they're saying about profiles and all of that, it's really friggin sweet. I mean why have to setup your controls the same way EVERY time you play a new game, when you can just do that once and you're set for good. It's so simple. As for the whole paranoia when it comes to the data collection, get over it and over yourself, every game online does data collection. I'm very glad to see that people are listening to my comments about reputation.

Ha well if it's official... The MS presentation today will be : "Hardware vision", XNA demos, new Dashboard and new Live.

So let me get this straight, if you want to be hardcore (aka get all the Cred Points you can), you're going to have to buy the Xenon version of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 and beat it on Hard mode without getting hit, huh?

It would be cool to have just a list of games you have beat and all, I don't like this points concept, which will lead to even more pissing contests.

The more I read about Xenon, the less I like it. Sounds more like "how can we milk the customers" and not like "how can we please the customers".

Gamer cred is going to be like post counts, I can see it now. Maybe not the spamming aspect, but the how "I'm better than you because of this number by my name" thing.

uh, how do you get that idea? if anything you're going to be getting more value for your xbox live fee. If they increase the fee though I 'll be really pissed.

WE WANT LESS FOR MORE MONEY !

Wow. The Gamesharks of the world are gonna really fuck the whole GamerCred thing. If you wanna avoid people who suck, avoid the really high cred people. Unless, of course, MS takes this Orwellian process and does something usefull with it... develop something that can detect Gameshark-like manipulation, and give it a perma auto-ban from rankings.

Edit: I'm not a Gameshark user, so I don't know the feasability of this, but it would be funny if people with Gamesharks were selling tricked out items in the micro-purchase section.
