360 beta kits shipping to Devs?

Xbox Evolved says so

Xbox 360 Beta Kits Released
Xbox 360 Gets a bit closer to release, as dozens of developers receive their Xbox 360 beta kits to make their games top of the line.

by: John Olin June 06, 2005

We have received word that developers are now receiving the hardware to make the final Xbox 360 titles for launch. These beta kits, which are a key part of the development will help make games that before were at only 30% of what they could be a full 100% with no excuses. Word also has reached us that many of the components to Xbox 360 for the retail version of the machine, such as the GPU and CPU have gone into production.

Despite many technical components going into production for the consumer version of the machine, Microsoft is holding off on production of the actual machines until after all beta kits have gone out, and prices have been finalized.

Anyone have anything to add? Blim/Oxy?

Haha. They're really sticking to the 1/3 power damage control.
"No! No! These new dev kits are 210% faster! But don't forget! It's not about the graphics!"

It's like a repeat of the original Xbox pre-launch time-line. MS sure loves to risk. One bad move. One problem with that manufacturing plant....and the whole world-wide launch for this year could go out the door.

what types of problems?

I dont think they are taking too big of a risk there.

Unexpected events. Like if factory problems arise with such a limited time frame it could really ruin the launch for MS.

Anything could happen with your first run of mass-manufacturing. You just never know.

[Allard damage control] The increase from 30% performance to 100% perfomance melted our manufacturing plants and raped our mothers. 360 launch delayed UFN. Due to the inconvenience we will release LE Wallguy fan art to the first 100 customers who returned defective power cords [Allard damage control]

well what type of unexpected events? i'm interested

like some chips not working or something? what type of event could botch the whole launch.

"well what type of unexpected events? i'm interested

Problem with a chip. Poor yields. Problem with the disc drive. 1 out of 5 defective consoles....stuff like that.

If something like that happen, on a large scale, it wouldn't leave them with a lot of time to fix the problem and still produce enough units for a world wide launch.

When ever you manufacture complex tech there could be issues. So what? Same goes for Nintendo, same goes for Sony.

Let's keep the Chicken Little posts to a minimum. :)

Nothing much except it's true. AFAIK the first retail systems should start being mass produced at the end of July. Some components are already being stocked and the assembly lines are being tested with the debug kits.
Expect LOTS of 360 demo units in the september/october games show around the world. It's going to be crazy.

Possibly because they might encounter production problems that they didn't take into consideration earlier.

How is this signifigantly different from any other console time-line. Aside from the fact that affects here in the US and not those in Japan?

What happened to getting those beta kits in July? Did MS just decide to speed this process up? At least this gives devs an extra month to polish games and tune them for launch.

Good. Hopefully we'll get a good idea where launch titles will be graphically 1-2months from now. I sure hope to god it isn't what we're getting so far (bar a few titles like GOW).

I think you have a point there. I never thought about that. I guess because the Xbox launched here first it was the first system that we, or at least I, paid more attention to as far as the launching prosses goes.

Well I think it's an ongoing process that will go through July. I doubt everyone's getting their kits this month. They'll probably start with the developers that have launch games planned, then big developers, then everyone else.

I'm preparing to be let down. That way, I'll be surprised when the graphics are TO THE MAX.

Most people won't follow my lead.

Makes sense, I'm hoping that visually certain titles will be able to at least take a step or two up graphically like DOA 4, PDZ, and NBA 2K6. Gears of War is basically the graphical bar and hopefully most XB360 games will achieve those types of visuals in 2nd gen games.

any chance we could see 3 xbox360 demo units in major retailers like circuit city and best buy?

1 in the games section, 1 in the computer section hooked up to a media center pc, 1 in the tv dept. hooked up to a hi-def tv?

there's 3 xbox demo units in the best buy i go to... one hooked up like normal, one hooked up to an HDTV and one hooked up to a 100 foot screen (multiscreen setup)

I sure hope the demo units are hooked up to HI-DEF. It would make a world of difference.

Plus I'm going to love hearing the sob stories of poor casual gamers not understanding why their 360 games don't look soo good on their analog TV then they take it home and that Microsoft is screwing them. You KNOW you're going to hear at least one statement like this in the 360's or PS3's lifetime:)

Wow Awesome!!! Can't wait to get my hands on that:)

I'm dissapointed that they don't mention anything about demo-ing Xbox Live. They really need to create some anonymous user accounts with time limits for demo units that would let people get online with just other kiosk demos. Like the matchmaking service in Halo.

Downsampling from a higher resolution plus 4X AA should make the games look quite nice on normal TVs.

That's a great idea. They should also throw the camera in the live demo unit.

PS2 had more lead-time with final kits, so did GC afaik.
This is cutting it close to PSP timeline (for japanese launch), which was quite rushed.

Haha. They're really sticking to the 1/3 power damage control.

Damage control? WTF are you talking about? That was part of the Alpha kit spec.

PS., Another forum said black, and like a bigger retail unit.

Correct. When you watch a DVD or a TV program on a regular 480i TV, it looks realistic. You will get the same benefits from better graphics - it's not like your 480i TV is somehow locked into the detail of last gen graphics.

How the fuck is this damage control when the development kit shipping schedule was known before E3?

July is when they get the final kits.

Yep. July should also be the time the press gets the first kits and previews too. That means that I'll get mine in August 2006 (if I'm lucky, if not it could be 2007 or 2008).

...and then subsequently ship it to Pedigree Chum's address.

So does this mean we should expect, in-depth, hands-on, sit-downs with 360 games from Gamespot and the likes next month?

Wooohoo. I'm dying for more stuff on the launch games. More media, impressions....E3 sucked sooo bad. Not even enough to be considered a tease. More like staring through a dirty window.

I don't know the details about all this, I've just been told that the press should get the kits in july (and previews also, but that's just me guessing). I don't really understand why MS would send kits this early to the press though.

Of course, but to hype a console and the games, you have to have the games in the first place. If there are previews on the final hardware as early as july that would have let the devs about 5-6 weeks to get their code running on the hardware and to polish it at least enough to get it to preview level. Since these are launch titles, having these guys lose time over very early preview builds for the press could be a bad idea.

Good point. But again, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get to preview all the launch games. Stuff like Kameo that's pretty far along shouldn't require too much work for press previewing. To those far along games, there's going to be immediate benefits to that same code running on better hardware. Like frame rate and other effects they had turned off at E3.

I'd estimate the press will get their kits in August, but they won't get anything substantial in terms of games until September and October when they start to get Preview and then Final builds of launch and post-launch games. It's gonna be the most hyped launch ever, quite possibly.
