360 not designed to play games vertically?

Seems some sites are reporting that MS did not design the 360 to play games in the vertical position. And that it may scratch discs while in vertical position. Hmm...

Those aren't my words, but those of a customer service representative. When someones Xbox 360 stopped playing games, he was told to orient the console horizontally, which fixed the problems. Microsoft wont fix his Xbox 360, because apparently it was never designed to play games vertically! Crazy stuff.

I got criticized for posting this, and yes, I have had my 360 scratch a game.

Anyway, I'm going to just move my 360 to the horizontal position and not worry about it.

I feel playing any DVD system vertically is bad... Its the nature of mechanics, if you place a motor sideways, in this case a dvd player motor, the bearings get worn out on one side before the other because more stress is put on one side from the weight of the DVD disc itself... but this would take years to actually become a problem.

I play my 360 horizontally.

not ... designed... to play ... games verticall?

so... putting all the machines vertically in demo kiosks was done to send what message exactly?

"HEY look ! this is how NOT to play games!!!"

...

anyways, i thought that it was always a bad idea to have any machine running vertically. I've heard from a number of various sources : "Want to f*ck your PS2 quicker? Play it vertically"

It clearly was designed to stand vertically. Just not necessarily designed well to stand vertically. When I get one, I intend to keep it horizontal and upside down, just to be safe.

What does the HDD have to do with scratching discs?

Also, horizontal placement lets your Xbox 360 inhale more.

The Xbox 360 manual has all sorts of precautions for when you have it set up vertically.

I believe that the only precautions are to be careful that it doesn't tip over and hurt someone such as a small child or dog. Nothing about overheating or scratching discs.

No. It's about scratching discs.

And wearing out the band on the motor faster.

EDIT: Started reading some of those DIGG comments:

If you seriously believe that the Xbox 360 is not meant to play games in a vertical position you are incredibly retarded.

I have spoken with them and I can assure you that Microsoft's customer service representatives are morons. Do not believe anything these idiots tell you over the phone.

I've been playing my Xbox 360 games in the vertical position for almost 3 weeks now without any problems. Hundreds of thousands of people have also. The customer service representative was an idiot, call back and speak to someone else.

Because if it works for 3 weeks, it'll be fine for five years!

I really sometimes wonder how microsoft can produce faulty products again and again but still actually sell millions of them.

I mean; if a company would produce a car which makes scratches into the windscreen if you drive to fast or if a company would produce speakers which inflame themselves if you listen too loud music they definitely would not sell one single product.

but hey, if it's microsoft it's ok, give me a product whihc scratches the discs you insert or give me an OS which has huge security issues. it's ok, it's from microsoft, we still push you more money in the ass!

I really don't get that! it looks like microsoft can bring out any faulty/shitty product and people still run into the stores and buy it no matter how many bugs it has!

People were pointing to the kiosks as potential evidence that the system is designed to play while vertical. However, if the kiosk has a HDD with the demo system loaded it doesn't really need to have a disc in the system, does it?

Where in the manual does it say this? I just took it out to check and all it says is that in the vertical position you cannot use any media smaller than a standard dvd/cd, to be careful not to to tip it over, and finally to make sure that when putting in a disk that it is correctly in the disc tray. That is it. Nothing about motor bands or scratching disks.

Of course 360 was designed to play games vertically. That's the wrong question. The question is can it do this well.

I think trying to make these connections so early after launch is pretty silly. All new consoles will have issues, so I'm sure whatever the problem is - if indeed there is any major problem - will be fixed in later 360 production runs (even if it's quietly).
