Not everyone has to wait around to hear details of Microsoft’s sexy new Xbox 360—and now, thanks to Kotaku, neither do you. An exclusive Kotaku source has revealed a bevy of facts about the next-generation console set to rock the Xbox world.

The original Xbox was a manly chunk of square black-and-green plastic meant to win over a generation of hardcore male gamers. The Xbox 360° will be about winning over gamers of all persuasions, with a customizable look and a kindler, gentler Circle of Light marketing campaign.

Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device will also be able to stand upright or on it’s side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off. The 360°s dashboard will also be customizable, making each console a thing totally unique to its owner.

Some of the inner workings of the 360° have also been confirmed. The device will feature high definition audio and video and wireless controllers, and will come in two flavors—one with a hard drive and one without. The biggest shock is that while Microsoft wants to make their 360° backwards compatible, they haven’t yet been able to pull it off.

“They’re working on it,” said our source.

so 360° is pretty much confirmed now? I don't know what's so clever with that name.

That mockup looks slick though.

The idea of a customizable console in terms of look is pretty cool, I think Microsoft probably noticed there was a quite a underground market for "souped up" looking consoles.

Ugh, I hate "360" and I hate that "ring of light" crap.

Hopefully the console will physically look cool, at least.

With wireless controllers as standard, how many controllers will that allow you to connect to the console? I'm guessing 4, but theoretically couldn't you connect more?

Theoretically you could connect probably as many as 12 or something. Also opens the door for things like a wireless keyboard/mouse.

Might be more benefical for Nintendo actually, in a situation where you could have several regular controllers, bongo drums (or whatever crazy accessorie) and several DS or Game Boy systems linked to the same system at the same time.

As many as there are available channels and what the software supports.

if real, sounds pretty slick. silver > black.

Welcome to the 70's.

Seriously all I care about in design is the ability to stand vertically. The PS2 sits so nice in my Audio/Video stand, I don't want to rearange things.

Oh, and they gotta change that name. IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Xbox 360 or just 360 is very hard to spell in most languages, thus making it less attractive and harder to remember. That's why I don't believe this news. If they are really going with that name then they are shooting themselves in the foot bigtime.

Still hate the name, but the rest sounds cool. I always thought the 'box was fugly as could be, so anything is an improvement but I really like the way the report describes it. I prefer black over silver for my components as a rule, but a bit of contrast never hurt.

Argh, I hate people like you. That's why every HDTV on the market has some sort of cheap silver finish instead of black. Black > silver. Always.

GAFtown is filled with the dumbest, most bitter analysts in the world :lol it's wonderful.
You know, GAF is big because of us, huge nerds with too much time to criticise even the most bogus histories! :D

Let´s see: I'm going to play my "equis box trescientos sesenta"...

Yes, doesn´t sound right at all

and in japanese: 俺は xbox 三百六十で 遊びます

: ore wa esubosu san hyaku rokujuu de asobimasu... (I play with Xbox 360)

Too long maybe? sound a little forced (by the way, my japanese is pretty poor, you can point to my ignorance if you fee it in case I did it wrong).

Sounds a little too long, do you feel it as something easy to say or think about it?

This is quite funny, you probably picked the two languages less important to MS :lol

Long numberic names are not an issue in the States, but they better get a rebrand like the Genesis-Mega Drive for Europe* because Xbox 360 sounds really forced in spanish, german, french and italian.

*if this is true

Please don't go for XBox 360 MS, please. All the other things seem nice enough though, the ability to "officially" customise the console (apart from using crappy stickers) is a pretty good idea.

Well, if they offer a unit with or without HDD, then that means thats will not utilize the HDD like on Xbox to load parts of the game as a buffer.

Can't they use RAM for that? Or maybe even a flash drive?

I'm reserving judgement until I hear the whole story. They could include some flash, or other memory, and enough of it to serve as a buffer and work with game saves while providing the big drive to those who have Live and do DLC and custom soundtracks.
