360 revealed - (no pics yet)

Well if money's the only thing, it's a pretty weak argument vs. not splitting a userbase. IMO.

But maybe the HDD isn't meant for game developers at all, perhaps it's for other things.

Weak argument? When you take a bath in billions of loss dollars, then you can talk about it not mattering. Putting in even a $1 component would cost millions of dollars. In any event the userbase isn't split - everyone can still play the same games. The three-fittys base would be no more split than people who purchased the konga peripheral drums. People who need the drive will own it - people who don't need the drive won't.

If the market is splintered and game devs will most likely program for the lowest common denominator wont the hard drive be virtually useless / pointless anyway? Why even bother with an HD version?

need i repeat again?

The idea from what has been lingering around is that people can use a variety of things as memory storage. memory cards, usb mass storage, computers over the network, etc.

imagine plugging in your mp3 player into your xbox 2 and using the mp3s stored on it as your custom soundtrack.

or streaming the mp3s through your home network to your xbox2?

Only thing microsoft has really done is removed the ability to use the hard drive as a scratch pad (lazy pad)

I won't discuss what I've been told in that regard, but there woouldn't be an HD version of the content - as well there shouldn't be. The HD is a storage medium, a game will get by just fine with out one.

Ahh thanks. Any chance the non-HD Xbox 360 will be upgradable? :O

Well I'm not arguing for the inclusion of the drive.

Like I say, the split is stupid if the HDD is supposed to be for developers. If it's for other things, not game related, then it's cool.

Let´s see: I'm going to play my "equis box trescientos sesenta"...

Yes, doesn´t sound right at all

and in japanese: 俺は xbox 三百六十で 遊びます

: ore wa esubosu san hyaku rokujuu de asobimasu... (I play with Xbox 360)

Too long maybe? sound a little forced (by the way, my japanese is pretty poor, you can point to my ignorance if you fee it in case I did it wrong).

Sounds a little too long, do you feel it as something easy to say or think about it?

I'd assume if MS went with the 360 name the Japanese (and any other foreign country) would pronounce it "three six oh" phonetically rather than "san hyaku rokujuu." Even if they don't, it's not like the concept of 360 degrees being a circle is some alien gaijin concept that will make their heads explode. I don't see the big deal.

Ummm, why do they have to translate 360 into other languages? Why cant it just be 360 (degrees of rotation)?
Mathematics is universal last I checked...
Anyway, glad to see MS is going the "lifestyle device" route. Xbox is HIDEOUS. A sleek device is much more desirable.

It needs to be spoken in everyday language.

If that happens, I will laugh.

Not only, 360 is a big number that requires careful spelling in many languages. It is quite a bonehead name from a branding perspective, the best brands to market are usually short and resounding.

Sounds great, the only part I dislike is the name and no doubt I'll just get used to it. I hated Xbox, PlayStation and Dreamcast too initially. If it's backwards compatible, maybe I'll pick one up. :)

what do you call the porsche 911?
when i was back in southeast asia, i called it porsche nine eleven, i didnt translate it in my native tounge. same went for the mazda RX-7.
i'm not sure what people are getting at. at all.

Most people from most countries do translate number based brands. In example we spell Porsche novecientos once and I tell you that germans are not going to start calling their sports cars by their american names ;)

That's right -

Porche 911 in swedish is Porche nio elva.

ah, i see what you're saying. south east asia has a better integration of the english language due to colonialism i suppose.

I like how everyone is assuming that the only country in the world that will be able to fathom pronouncing "360" is North America. Like every foreign country on the planet is going to fucking implode if they have to figure out a way to say it in their own language. OH NO IT MIGHT BE A REALLY LONG WORD THAT WILL CONFUSE THEM.

Nobody is talking about being confused but about not being able to retain the brand that easily because of the spelling and the longer name. And yes, 360 is not an easy number to spell in most european languages, if we are thinking about associating brands with consumers' minds this is a issue.

It is not something critical, but it is all we got to speculate and we shall nitpick something damn it!!! ;)

If Microsoft is so concerned with this retarded branding numbering, then just call the damn thing Xbox 3(rd Generation) and say that the jump in capability suggests that it skip a generation.

Hey it sure as hell wouldn't be the first time Microsoft did THAT :lol

Yeah, but you're just arguing for keeping the drive, or losing it. What are the arguments for the split?

It's really quite simple... hard drives are not necessary with 3-6-0. Music, game saves, and downloadable content can be transfered elsewhere. The market will not be fragmented as far as developers are concerned.

Option A - (for people with home networks)

Load front end software on PC
Transfer data back and forth from PC

Option B -

Plug in external drive to USB port
External drive could be a Ipod, PSP, digital camera, hard drive, anything that has storage

Option C - (for people who just play games)

Buy a memory card

Option D - (for the suckers who like to blow money)

Buy the overpriced, officially licensed, Microsoft branded hard drive peripheral.

The more I hear this name the more it has a nice ring to it, I mean think of the marketing possibilities such as that fake ad someone posted above.

ARE YOU READY FOR A REVOLUTION ?

Xbox logo in the bottom of the add , nothing more.

XBOX 360 THE GAMING REVOLUTION!
With a pic of the new logo and the xbox logo still somewhere

Finally, do the same add but post a pic of the console and have some cheesy 360 catchline for all the games... I mean it could work.

I know. This retarded argument is really confusing me as well, considering most countries simply use the original name of the product when describing them...

:lol The name must be real if the viral marketers are already out trying to gain it acceptance

as for an hdd-less Xbox T-W-O, if it at least has some sort of internal storage, at least on the order of 5 gig, it should be fine. Not ideal, but fine. The presence of HDDs this gen and what the mod scene has done with them has really gotten me hoping for a legitimate "game jukebox" setup next gen. I'd like to hope that's something that an Xbox 2 w/HDD SKU would offer to the people willing to spend the extra to buy it.

It certainly won't make it any easier to build and debug such features if they have to allow for a multitude of configurations with different transfer rates and different protocols. Won't some developers have fun if people start complaining about the game hanging if the ingame mp3 playlist they're streaming across a home network barfs because they're router goes down...

X-N-A ... no worries.

now I can imagine xbox after 360 will be xbox 3000 ... :lol

The thing is, if you do a 360, you wind up precisely where you started.

Logic kind of dictates that Microsoft wants to do a 180.

180 could be just as bad. Now we're going backwards! :lol

why the fuck are some of you spelling out "xbox 360" in other languages

it's not written "xbox three-hundred and sixty" in english

xbox 360 is what it will look like in any region

Razoric said:
Other than that it sounds great. HDD is gonna sting though. :(

I agree, if true.. the HDD option is a mistake. It will only split developers, some will use it and some won't..most will not because they know 100% of xbox2 user base will at least have the console.

add-ons never work.

Was going to make an Xbox 911 joke but decided against it.

Any word on any extra bells and whistles the HD version would have?

I for one would like to see a Tivo type device in it.

Also without the hard drive, does that mean no MMORPGs for the 360, or could they store data on their servers?

No, for MMORPG's, you'd have to buy a big enough flash drive to support the game if you had the non-HD version :)

...with the way MMORPGs work right now

if someone changed the way they work though..

(not a tease, im just sayin')
