Xbox 360, PSP Connectivity Demonstrated

Back in Redmond headquarters, Microsoft’s Jeff Henshaw told us that the Xbox 360 will work with rival companies’ products and then at E3 2005, J. Allard mentioned specifically the Xbox 360 ability to connect with the PlayStation Portable and even Apple’s iPod.

Looking pretty sweet!

Right above Morning Wood... Microsize :lol :lol

Yeah, if Microsoft comes right out and brags about the PSP thing again, Sony might just try to find a way to lock it out. But if they did that, then surely the PSP would stop synching with some computer somewhere (given the 360's configuration, it'd probably only affect Macs, too).

I dunno, I think the front-end looks pretty functional, even if the design is still a little too "Windows Media Player" for my tastes.

Wow, a game console which supports mass-storage devices is able to play open-format files off of a standard mass-storage device.

Now let's see it play some tracks bought from the Sony Music Store or iTunes. Oh, wait, can't do that.

Good thing I never buy proprietary formats.

why buy files in a proprietary format and be locked into the mercy of the controller of the format?

Well, I own an iPod and a PSP, so I guess it'll be a useful feature. Maybe to transfer Xbox360 saves without buying a memory card?

And that's why us old farts buy our music on CDs and rip it to our PCs. Having it on a physical medium that's pretty much got unlimited play options is a lovely thing I don't ever want to give up.

oh my god what an overwhelming negative!

whatever.

Ken's gotta be thrilled by this one. I wouldn't be surprised to see some firmware update that breaks it post 360-launch. :lol

Uh, if I recall, Sony sent a PSP to Bill Gates before it launched, sort of as 'thank you' the Sony-Microsoft partnership for Sony PCs running Windows XP.

If they thought Bill would plug it into his 360, they might not have. :lol

Why is this even remotely a big deal? I was laughing my ass off when MS announced YOU COULD EVEN PLAY MUSIC OFF THE PSP! GASP! OMG! Oh wait, the PSP is just a standard USB Mass Storage Device. There's no special support or anything remotely interesting going on here. The Xbox 360 can't tell the difference between a PSP and a thumbdrive, so why is this at all a big deal?

Because I said so.

It would be funnier if people took UMD's ripped to a memory stick and tried to emulate PSP games on the 360.

Uh, only time "PSP" is shown in those screenshots is in reference to the fact that there's a folder named "PSP" on the memory stick. Rename it "Bill Gates is a fag" and that would be displayed instead. Doesn't mean the Xbox team has it in for Billy G.

When they get the PSP working as a controller for the 360, it'll be news worthy.

This kinda news... its kinda bragging about putting BMW floormats into a Mazda or some such.

the reverse would be true, if hooking up a 20 gig cigar drive to psp wouldn't make it complete contraband.

I feel offended with this paragraph.

A gaming console able to recognize mass-storage devices... Recognizes mass-storage devices!!!! WOWWWWW!!!

I hate when i'm treated like a fool.

*Shrug* Didn't know that the PSP kept its files in directory labeled "PSP" on the mem stick, I thought it just had Game, Music, SaveData and all that as directories in the root area. So my mistake, then.

Wouldn't this if anything make Sony happy? It'll get all the Xbox fanboys out buying PSPs ideally, that or no one will use it, in which case it might as well not even be there. I'd have to believe that Sony would gladly even want to see games offering additional content when hooking up a PSP to an X360 because thats basically a double bonus, more devs supporting connectivity (connective games would almost definately be on PS3 as well) plus it'd sell more PSPs, Sony's #1 objective at this point in time.

Seriously... so what? You'd get the EXACT same effect of you connected a memstick reader to a 360 with your PSP memstick inside it. Its got pretty much fuck all to do with the PSP.

Konichiwa Bitches? :lol :lol

Never heard of that one before.

Heh, it's a recent song by a very popular Swedish artist called Robyn. Who is really good, btw. :)

I like "be mine" (or that's what I think it's called) :)

Yeah, I think Be Mine is great. Actually, I think the sound of her latest album in general is cool and very refreshing.

You've got to love how Cesar forgets to mention where these dashboards shots come from (posted on psp-vault, then first reported by xbox365). Reading that news you'd think it's official stuff from MS.

you gotta love how they watermarked them too

Shitty GAF search engine to the rescue. My thread's better. The news is hardly "new dashboard shots"

GAF search works fine, and how are they not new dashboard shots? Because I didn't cream myself over the fact that it happens to be a PSP connected instead of any other external storage device?

Ya, this isn't a big deal.

What is a "big deal" is the iPod support. They've written special drivers (i.e., HFS+) and handling routines to get it to work (without Apple's help or consent). Nice to see them supporting it though, since I only have a Mac and no media center pc to stream from.

Where have they said they've added HFS+ support? Vast majority of iPods are FAT formatted, I don't see why it's necessary.

They haven't said it anywhere. ;)

And, not all iPods are FAT, as you said...but some iPods working, some not would be a tech support nightmare.

That's...wrong. Did MS actually lincense the psp sdk out or is simply connecting to some standard universal output on the psp?(Not out in the uk yet, so I've yet to examine one..)

Who would want to defile their 360 by attaching a peice of crap to it like a PSP ?

What are they thinking ? Someone who owns a PSP is more likely to go for the PS2/PS3.

As for the screens saying PSP... many USB devices identify themselves.

Do you people even read the thread? I can't believe some of the responses in here.

Once again: The PSP is nothing more than a MASS STORAGE DEVICE.

That's it.

It's the same as hooking up most any mp3 player or ipod via usb to a pc. There isn't any OMG CONNECTIVITY magic going on here. It doesn't have SHIT to do with SONY or PSP or APPLE, it's just simply a mass storage device.

And thats why us young whipper snappers buy music off the itms, pay 4 bucks less, have it in under a minute and just burn it to a cd where we can re rip it as necessary if we really want a non protected version :P

I'll trade 9.99 and 10 minutes of cd burning time over a trip to a store that probably doesn't have what I want anyway.

Don't forget most digital cameras.

Sidenote though it DOES have to do with Apple, because you can't access the music on an ipod in mass storage mode.

So you can't play videos from the PSP, that makes me sad :(
Says who? This guy never went to the video option so we have no idea (or atleast he didn't take screenshots of it or mention it)
