360 VGA Cable Users...

Wasn't there some sort of optical out for all the cable hookups or was I just imagining things?

The base of the plug (where it connects to the Xbox) has a port for you to plug in a TOSLINK digital optical cable; the same thing supported by the Xbox packs and the back of the PS2 itself. Unless Microsoft is generous you're going to have to supply the optical cable yourself.

1) Yes
2) It goes to your stereo system, or PC speaker/headphone if you use RCA stereo to 3.5mm adapter.

Shog thanks for answering the 1st question. But the 2nd question I said next to the red/white cables...If thats what you were talking about I apologize.,

If your monitor only has a DVI in, you'll need an adapter.

Buy a female/female converter for VGA so you can plug it to your monitor's cable.

Apparently, I can't read. :| Sleepy and all....

That's your standard D-Sub/DB15 VGA monitor out.

Well this is interesting i'm thinking about getting this cable. But i want to know something. I was looking around the net and i saw a few sites that said that DVD movies do not display when you use the VGA cable. Can someone prove them wrong and tell me if it does display properly in 480p.

Its sad it cant upconvert but i'll take 480p right now.

VGA cable has optical audio out for 5.1 AND stereo RCA. I am surprised there's no "headphone" audio out for PC speakers, but a $2 adapter will fix that.

Now THAT is what I wanted to know. Thanks Stinky :)

Didn't know there were notebooks with VGA or Composite in. May I ask you what device you have?

He's talking about using the signal through his TV tuner adaptor(a component signal if Im not mistaken).

There are NO LAPTOPS WITH VGA IN! Trust me, I've looked :)

Crap, you guys are right. I was told that if I had the proper port on the back on my laptop, the VGA cable would work fine. Didn't realize that it had to be VGA in. Now I'm screwed :(

Mmm... The VGA cable...

In my opinion, the VGA Box was the best thing to happen to Dreamcast; it's the primary reason why the DC ended up being my favorite console of all time.

It's so awesome that there's a VGA cable for Xbox 360. I envy you people who are gonna use it on a PC monitor.

The Dreamcast VGA adapter was great, but the one for the 360 isn't going to be quite as significant now that HD sets are much more prolific than in the Dreamcast days. Chances are you'll have a better experience playing on a decent-sized nice HD set versus having to sit close to a traditional monitor CRT. I see the X360 VGA adapter more as a cheap alternative for those that can't yet/won't buy an HD set, but still likely have a computer monitor.

How? Do games have to support this feature or is it standard? And to which refresh rates can you select?

It's in the Xbox dahsboard where you select your resolution. When you have a VGA cable plugged in, a metric shit-ton of resolutions and Hz rates appears.

Monitors with a hard wired VGA cable are pretty common, but all those need is a little male/female adapter or a Y-splitter.

VGA switchers are still weirdly expensive. And a ripoff.

Do any res over 1360x768 appear if the monitor supports it?

That reminds me, the new System of a Down album is great. :D

Not understanding if I need an extra adaptor to hook this up to my monitor or not.

My monitor has one cable coming out the back that goes into my computer with the end looking like the end of the VGA cable. Will I need a female to female adaptor like this:

Also, my HDTV only has two component inputs and one DVI input. Could I use a VGA to DVI adaptor like this:

30dv-05200.jpg

with the 360 VGA cable? Would there be any signal degredation?

Thanks for the help.

There's no degredation because there's no conversion. The DVI-I spec allows an analog signal to be carried, which is why you can hook a video card up to a VGA monitor with DVI with a cheap adapter. However it's almost certain your TV is DVI-D, digital only. Buy a component switchbox.

I have a Sony WEGA KV-36XBR800 that has a DVI-HDCP (24 pin digital DVI).

While this thread is here, would this dell lcd monitor be good for 360?

For those too lazy its the 24" one, my worries (ie the things i have no idea about) were the response time (is 12ms fast enough?) and the fact the aspect ratio is 16:10 not 16:9

Also, it has all these ports..

1 x composite video input
1 x component video input
1 x S-video output
1 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)
1 x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI

Does anyone who has one know if you can have the DVI & VGA plugged in at the same time (ie 360 & PC) and switch between them?

I could also get this Acer monitor for slightly less money, it just has one VGA port, but it has a response time of 6ms.

If the Dells 12ms is good enough and theres no other problems that people know of i'll most likely go with that but id appriciate opinions/possible pit falls of both.

I've got the Dell FPW2405 and have my current xbox connected to it. Most of the games I play are in 480P and look a bit blocky because of the low res. Sitting a little further from the screen solves this. Response time is not an issue, according some the panel is actually 8ms. It al comes down to how it's measured I guess.

I'm using Xbox Media Center in 1080i mode and it looks great and razor sharp. There is an option to make it true 16:9, this creates small back bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

DVI & VGA is possible, I used to have my laptop on vga, pc on dvi, tv tuner on composite and xbox on component. It's a great monitor and I'm planning to connected my X360 to it as soon as I'm able to afford one :)

There is a button to switch between the inputs.

There is even a picture and picture and picture besides picture mode.
The inputs are:
1-VGA
2-DVI
3-SVIDEO
4-COMPOSITE
5-COMPONENT

You can use 1 or 2 in pip mode combined with 3,4 or 5.

So using vga and s-video with pip mode works, vga and dvi doesn't. Component and s-video also doesn't work. Component and dvi works etc.....

Any of you contest winners using VGA yet? Let us know your experiences! Will it support resolutions over 1360x768 if your monitor does? Will the scaler letterbox 720p on a 1280x1024 4:3 monitor?

I said god damn. Mmm...I am feeling the cash for this Dell monitor draining through my hands as we speak. My current set-up only caters to 480p at the moment although it is a projector. But I've got the feeling that when I get my 360 I really am going to want that extra resolution. The Dell would be a great stop gap until 720p projectors drop in price.

Mmmmmust buy now. I 'suppose' I really should wait and see how happy I am with my 360 at launch before buying this...but it is very very tempting. Thanks for the heads up on this Dell screen, looks ideal for the 360.

I'm hopefully getting a tree sitty premium pack with the component cables. And I have a flatscreen CRT tv (Sony Wega) non-HD. And a fairly new Dell (Samsung?) 17 or 19" flat panel LCD monitor from the uber comp I bought 10 months ago.

Should I connect the component cables to the Audio Authority switchbox that also handles my PS2 and GCN and play on my TV, or go out and buy the VGA cable and use it with my monitor? IIRC, my monitor is currently connected to my computer via DMI cables, so the VGA slot is free...

You are probably better with the VGA cable. Do you want PGR3 to be scaled twice? Multiple scaling is more likely to introduce lag and make artifacts more noticeable.

I don't think this has been posted yet, but the 360 VGA cable comes packed with a female connector (and the sound adapter for PC speakers.) :)

Six posts up :lol

You know, I gotta give them credit, that is the one thing that MS has gotten right with the Xbox 360 - they put the right stuff in the box and in general, stuff works the way you expect it to. Glad to hear the VGA cable comes with everything that just about anyone would need to get it going out of the box...

for those who don't have a 360 yet, my VDigi VD-Z3 works great with the 360! no worries about a VGA cable :)

Thats what im using, and getting a component switcher so I can connect my other consoles at the same time as its a arse to keep unplugging them.

Still getting a VGA cable for backup and incase I want to use someone elses monitor, good to know it comes with all the needed equipment as I was about to buy a few more wires.

Thanks for the advice. I should have picked up the VGA Cable when I had it in my hand. Ah well. Tomorrow, then.
