We've replaced the original 480i 4:3 PGR3 pics with blown up Need For Speed: Most Wanted DS shots. Let's watch and see if anyone notices.

:lol

These pictures pale in comparison when shown side by side with the 720p pics. So much detail is lost. Although the lighting is still nice, it looks very muddy and undetailed. I feel bad for SDTV users.

In motion it still looks damned impressive, even on an SD set. It's not a humongous generational leap like we got last time around, but it was still enough to make me nod in appreciation when I saw the commercial.

Damn, if I did not recently get a new Computer Monitor/HDTV Combo, I would seriously rethink my purchase of the Xbox later this month, at least until sometime next year.

Edit:

I have not seen the comercial yet.

Aside from the expanded draw distance (obviously involving more polys), it doesn't really stand out as looking next-gen in those pics. From the standard views the car models aren't obviously improved, the textures aren't espeically higher res, etc.

... You'd think in 480i mode they could afford to turn on some fucking Anisotropic Filtering for cryin' out loud. :/

It's a shame, because the pics really don't show how impressive it looks (and believe me, I'm no Xbot). There's just something about the game in motion that is undeniably next-gen.

If I hadn't seen game footage on my own TV set, though, I would be agreeing with you right now based on these screens.

Are these pictures 'shopped? Something looks off with the text...

[EDIT: could just be compression artifacts]

This post makes me feel better.

It doesn't look very next gen at 480i. It's comparable to say Burnout 3.

burnout runs at 60fps too, impressive feat by the guys and gals at criterion by matching a next gen game with 5 year old hardware. i can't wait to see their first true next gen game, it should be a magnificent feast for graphics whores.

Damage Control must be on tonight because that shit looks horrible. :lol at everyone defending this game. It seriously looks no better than Burnout 3.

Where are all of the so-called experts who said to expect letterboxed SDTV, downrezzed from 720p widescreen? Get in here and eat some crow!

Well, this is better for the casuals who don't want "black bars", but it looks like ass.

Are there SDTV screens for the non sports or racing titles? I could really care less what this looks like but it'll piss me off to no end if something like Oblivion looks this assy in SDTV (I really don't want to play Xbox 360 games on my LCD monitor).

Although I've hacked my TV to play 1080i... perhaps that looks better?

Don't blame me, I went through the xbox IGN site. I guess IGN just uses one set of pictures for their multiplatform reviews.

That said, if a PS2 game matches the X360's premiere technical title at 480i...

Black bars are great for movies where a cinematographer is meticulously composing each shot, and downright retarded for games where you are dynamically running or driving around. Cutscenes, sure. Gameplay, no.

But its low rez. ??????

Actually, in the old PS1/Saturn days, we did call 640x480 'high res'. Today we call it 'standard definition'.

I'm still kinda weary about these pictures. I would like to see another source confirm that this is how PGR3 looks on a SDTV.

Good to hear. Those screens show a total lack of detail (good draw distance though), it really does look like something current-gen. Though by the time X360 arrive in Australia I plan to have a HDTV so this won't affect me.

I think it'll look like that, minus compression artifacts.

However, we are in an age where you really have to see a game in motion to fully judge the visuals.

Thats very true. So even when the images look "less appealing" then their 720p counterparts it will probably still look amazing in motion (as it already is). This seems to be happening alot.

PS: I'm not one of them, I have a 60" Sony HDTV :D

Shit, Xbox games look fine on my 60" Hitachi. They'll look better on my soon-to-be-owned HD set though. :)

The haters can go stick trumpets up there asses and toot those horns to someone who can stillgive a shit. Consider that the game will still look fantastic while playing it and that these shots are still better then any racing game available. That screen of burnout comes close with its car model but the blur , the textures and IQ are far worse. Plus burnout , despite running at 60 fps has slowdown and screen tearing all over the place.

Funny because for 2D games 640x480 is still considered high res where ppl always bitch for "high res sprites" for fighters (Guilty Gear series) :D
