What do you think? Sony tried once with the PSP and was unable to come through; will that experience help or hinder them with the PS3?

Answer. NOW.

I don't think Sony's even going to attempt it. Considering the demand the PS3 is going to have they'll shoot themself in the foot by launching it WW and then going through a long period where they can't keep up with the demand.

Sony should first release in japan as soon as possible and let the rest of the world get hyped watching japan play the PS3. A japanese launch is ps3 advertising for the rest of the world.

I don't see how Sony really needs it, of all the players in the market. It's reasonably safe to assume that consumers will bear the territorial delay for some Sony dominance. Better they focus on launching right in every territory.

Gamefront has recently reported they're considering it, but even with PSP they wanted to launch worldwide :lol
At the end of the day yields of key chips (Cell& RSX) when they go in mass production will determine production capacity and so the possibility of a ww launch.
Imo they'll launch in Japan and USA in 1H 2006 while in Europe in 2H 2006.

A worldwide release outside of the holiday season can be done. I think it's pointless to even try during the holidays, because you just can't support the rush from both sales cycles at once. I also don't think Sony needs to.

If Nintendo actually does a worldwide release, they need to make sure they release in time for Easter!!!

I'm going to call:

Jpn: Summer 2006
USA: Nov 2006
Europe: 2007

Not all worldwide launches are created equal.

Sony has to ship 2-3x the number of units their competitors will have to in order to meet demand for the next Playstation.

They couldn't do it with a much less sought after product like the PSP so I just can't see them doing it to any satisfactory degree with the PS3.

I think Nintendo and Sony can achieve close NTSC launches, but PAL gamers will have to wait a little while. The Nintendo wait will probably be shorter this time around, though.

It'll release in Japan first. But realistically, the US is a much bigger market. So they should release there first. And try not to fuck Europe over again.

360 = Christmas launch; Rev = likely Christmas launch; PS3 = maybe not Christmas launch???

It makes a big deal whether or not it makes sense to bother with a worldwide launch if it's not hitting the main buying time.

If would be commercially, probably the wrong word - sorry, impossible to launch the PS3 in all three territories at once.

Demand is going to be absurd. So unless Sony can crank out a couple million every week, they had best hold off until they get a decent sized supply for sale in each region.

Same goes for me. As a European, I honestly don't see us getting a PS3 till 2007. Even then no doubt we will be screwed on price, unless they finally follow Nintendos and Microsofts lead.

PlayStation
JP~ 12.03.94
NA~ 09.09.95
EU~ 09.29.95

PlayStation 2
JP~ 03.04.00
NA~ 10.26.00
EU~ 11.24.00

PSP
JP~ 12.12.04
NA~ 03.24.05
EU~ 09.01.05

....something tells me no.

I'm expecting the Rev to be worldwide.. and the Rev will be after PS3 in some regions and before PS3 in others.

I think the PS3 launch will probably not be worldwide. Which really isn't a bad thing when you consider the very "limited" launch the X360 is supposedly having in Europe and Japan and Nintendo will probably face similar difficulties with the Revolution.

demand doesn't matter. Having demand and no supply can also help in a territory. eg release in Europe with trickle numbers, get units in stores, word of mouth out - just to stifle the X360. Even if it takes 6 months to get reasonable production ramped up, just soft launch in a few main territories.

The only thing stopping them is capacity. PS2 and PSP doing lots of units doesn't help that either.

europe will get its ps3 around christmas time. they will use the games convention 2006 to advertise the console to the people, so a christmas launch seems likely.
