"360"?

asking dangerous questions
Xbox 360.
What does the "360" mean?

Yea yea, I know there are 360 degrees in circle.
But what does that symbolize? I really want to know.

Perhaps the surround sound standard on all games? The all encompasing sensation one would get from playing the Xbox 360? The fact that it uses wireless controllers? All those seem like pretty weak arguments.

So really. Why "360" MS? It doesn't even sound that cool.
"yBox" would've been cooler imo.

I don't think it really means anything. They just used it because Xbox 2 would sound inferior to the PS3.

In an interview I saw somewhere Peter Moore said 360 came from the Xbox 360 being the centre of your home entertainment system, with everything connecting to it - like connecting from all directions, 360 degrees.

So lame. No one is ever going to think of that concept when they see "360". They are going to think of skateboarding and fake "coolness" created by marketeers. Preventing people who know nothing about consoles thinking Xbox 2 is automatically < PS3 would be the real reason for the name.

only people with narrowminded vision will think that way.

360 means taking your product and expanding it to new plateus, but still keeping in touch with the same original vision that you had with the original Xbox.

Thats my take anyway.

It's obvious that they couldn't go with "Xbox 2", for the reasons mentioned above.
It just seems like they needed a number, that wasn't "2", and decided on "360" (cause honestly, what other number is there? "666"?)

It just seems like a BS name.
I'm sure their marketing team will do some nice things with it. But still...

Previous consoles have used "Super", "64", "Advance", "2", "3"...those names were just as BS. But at least they meant something that was easily understandable.

Then again, it could've been worse..."Xbox xhorn!"

The only cool thing that came out of the 360 theme is the Circle of Light. It's a nice way to be an indicator (for player status/messaging).

Because they were worried that "Xbox 2" would seem way too weak a name up against "PlayStation 3".
That doesn't make ANY sense.

"Why did you decide to name your console the Microsoft Faggot?"

"Because we didn't want to name it XBox 2."

...

It's also interesting how Sony and MS have to stick with "Playstation" and "Xbox" because they are not pure videogame companies.

Nintendo and Sega, on the other hand, created new names for each of their consoles.
E.g. Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Revolution, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Genesis, etc.
vs.
Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation 2, Sony Playstation 3, Sony Playstation Portable, MS xbox, MS xbox 360.

"Nintendo" and "Sega" are kinda like "Playstation", "Xbox", (and "Gameboy"). They are strong enough brands to exists on their own.

It's just kind of lame that, since Sony and MS have to stick to "Playstation" and "xbox", they can only append numbers to their brands. Cause, honestly, "Microsoft XBOX Xenon" is just too damn long.

Actually.
Now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense.

"xbox" does not even make sense. I guess the 'x' is supposed to connote EXTREME!!!!
If this is the case, then "360" just extends the EXTREME!!!!! (as a poster above noted).

The next xbox (i.e. xbox 3) will be name "XBOX SICK 1080!"

The original code name for the Xbox was the DirectX Box. That's where the name came from.

Wasn't XBox1 originally called DirectXbox?

One of the stories that went around for awhile was that the Xbox's code name, "Xbox" (named for the reason you mentioned) stuck after the press got wind of it and people latched on to it.

Why not call it something new? Naming consoles like they were movie sequels is so lame.

Viva Dreamcast!

They threw a ton of money into establishing the "Xbox" time. Not a chance that they will drop it anytime soon.

There will be no new Xbox in the next hundred years. How do you think Microsoft will get 1 Billion users on their side?

I'm seeing the 360 monkier behind a lot of products these days for some reason or another. From razors to toothpaste to televison shows, the 360 number is popping up all over. Seems like Yahoo is getting into the act too. Look for yourself:

Seriously, though, that is one of the reasons for the 360 number. It sounds stupid as all hell, but there are some consumers out there who would invoke the "3>2" rationale.

360 = coming full circle, or being 'complete'.

Anyway, it's like msn messenger for mac. Disregarding which has more optiions, they're current ly at version 4 for mac, and version 7 for PC, but that doesn't mean the version 7 is newer...though many people think that it is. For the record, yes, it is a more complete version, but the numbering is the point. or another thing, we have software at work that is version 9.0, but a rival software package has been released, that has many more features and is more user friendly and advanced - it's version 1.0. Seeing as Joe average has no idea, and X 9.0 is on the shelf next to Y 1.0, they'd nearly always go X9.0. In the case odf consoles, yes, everyone is aware of teh Sony and MS brands, but it advertising and brandnames can be a subconcious thing. Better to not play that game at all.

There was a hilarious (and not tongue-in-cheek, mind you) explanation about the name in some old thread by some member. Something about doing a 360, a new beginning etc. etc.

It's called 360 because it revolves around you.

Now doesn't that make ya feel special? Good, now buy our fucking console [/Microsoft marketing]

I've always thought that the name is totaly oxymoronic. Xbox 360 (circle)?

So it's a square circle?

OMG revolution! MS invents new genre of shapes with Xbox 360!

Microsoft empowering the "Circle of Light"
Circle = 360 degrees
The 360 will shower you in 360 degrees of light blinding us all
WERE DOOMED!!!

Are you serious? Really? Wow.
I'm completely serious. People continually dodge the question by using this answer. When someone asks, "Why did they call it 360", replying with, "Because they didn't want to call it XBox 2 since it would seem weak next to the PS3 name" is obviously not a valid answer to the question they were asking. If someone asked why they didn't call it XBox 2, sure. But the question was how the hell they came up with "360", why they decided to go with it (over ALL other names, not just XBox 2), and what exactly does it mean.

It's getting really annoying having to spell things out for people in the gaming forum, thank god e3 is at an end.

Mike: if it had been specified as such, well, maybe people would have come to that conclusion. :)

As is, FfF has the right idea--360 = circle = all aspects of media.

Actually I am glad they eschewed the "Brand + Version Number" naiming convention Sony has championed. I really like the pattern the rest of the industry follows.

Ok, since we're here, I would've figured the question, "Why call it XBox360?" inherently carried with it, "Why not XBox2?". You know the unspoken question.

Anyway, XBox had to keep the name - you don't successfully set up a brand name then ditch it. You use teh same name to let people know you're dealing with the next one.

Playstation -> Playstation2 -> Playstation3.

Nintendo -> Super Nintendo -> Nintendo64 -> GameCube ?!

Yes, it's NINTENDO Gamecube, but most refer to it as simply GC. Anyway, I believe the nintendo company name is so tied with videogames (seeing as it's the only thing they do), it stands on it's own merits. You can argue wether something like GameCube was a wise decision elsewhere.

So, XBox has to be there somewhere, to really emphasize it being the next step. You could do the 2 thing, but they may have not liked teh whole 2 vs. 3 thing as well as not wanting to be contrived. Why 360? Well, it does mean complete (180 means half). And it doesn't necessarily have to refer only to a circle, seeing as any foursided shape has angles that dd up to 360. They may want to emphasize the complete entertainment that is the XBox. It has that extreme factor, geared towards it's userbase.

It's a number with at least some meaning.

Why a number? Well, why not? They could've called it XBox next, or Super XBox, but maybe they simply liked 360.
