3DS Streetpass Experiences

Nice, finally got some Streetpasses yesterday. I work in downtown DC and managed to get a some Animal Crossing and Etrian Odyssey 4 (which I need for SMT4) Streetpasses.

It appears that "spoofing" a Nintendo Zone works perfectly well for cross-country/continent Streetpass relaying.

Could you link to the thread? I can never streetpass with anybody down here and I have an extra router laying around with DD-WRT in it. I could totally make it a plug-and-play nintendo hotspot.

5 passes in my home town today. Not as crazy as yesterday's city trip, but I'm ok with a solid 5.

All people I have never seen before, so Relay is succeeding in that regard.

I recently got a streetpass while sitting at home. I was quite surprised to wake up to that, as I didn't think the signal from the device would be strong enough to travel through so much.
Either that, or this person broke into my house. If they did, I got Animal Crossing data from them anyway; worth it.

I always like getting streetpasses while I'm out and then try to guess who they might have been when I see their Mii; some people's Mii characters are so spot-on.

Does anyone know - when you go into the plaza and see your wee collected Miis all lined up, are they in chronological order from earliest to latest or the other way round? I'm trying to link Miis to faces on my commute.

Superchuffed. I got my 10 today and farmed the pure bladestone of UK Miis at some point along the way. Mii Squad is so much easier with 10 than 3 so managed to clear mission 4-3 then went into Mansion and found my first two plaza tickets in chests. And I think I get the
console
hats in the rotation tomorrow. Woo!

Got ten Streetpasses out and about today (previous record in the same place was four) so relay is obviously working brilliantly.

I still can't decide if I like it, though.

I'm getting close to 20 flowers in Garden, but I'm far from finishing any of the other new games.

I have apparently passed 100 people since the new games were added, so that's cool.

If anyone wants to try this, we just need to pick a MAC address for the NeoGaf Virtual Relay...

If this actually works I'd totally be up for joining this, I too have an old router with dd-wrt installed.

I don't really understand how it would work though. How would the two routers know to communicate with each other?

I'm starting to enjoy these wee walks at lunchtime now where I stand as close to an O2 shop or a Caffe Nero as possible and pretend to check my phone for a bit, then move on to the next, purposely seeking out groups of tourists in between locations to stand near or shadow for a while to hopefully give me a pass from some exotic foreign region. This isn't weird at all.

We've got the Commonwealth Games next year, I hope the 3DS is still a thing then.
Haha, this made me laugh. Good luck getting international hits.

They don't. It's all done on Nintendo's servers.. that's why they didn't have to update the hotspots, just the 3dses (and the Nintendo servers)

Basically what happens is that if you are in a Nintendo Zone hotspot it connects to the Nintendo servers and your street pass along with your mac address is sent to the server.. you then receive the most recent streetpass from that mac address.

It's neat that people have created their own "relays", but they aren't relays. You can get passes from people from anywhere in the world. What's neat about that? The neat thing about street passes is that you get the data from someone whom you actually crossed paths with during your day. Relays time delay that by a bit, which I'm not thrilled about, but it's still local at least.

Well, my circuit is planned...
gottastreetup_zps2686cc95.gif

Now, watch me completely fail to memorise this at all...including the shopping centre (point R) there are just over 20 hotspots going by O2 and The Cloud
I'll still fail to fill the queue, namely due to not finding some of the places on street view and unsure of signal strength outside of them

Now I'm wishing I had a 3DS at the London Olympics last year. Damn.
Remember, LTD goes up. There would have been less potential passes last year due to fewer overall owners.

My brother got his first relay streetpass the other day...from a guy who cared enough to carry his 3DS to McDonalds with him but not well enough to get any puzzle pieces or buy any of the new games :(

So many people around here like that. Not saying everyone NEEDS to care about streetpass....but they should!

Hey, Home Streetpass Relay spoofing works.

Just got a Relay StreetPass after setting everything up and putting the 3DS in sleep mode.

I wonder if we can, indeed, create a overall NeoGAF StreetPass, or if we need to use one of the "enabled" mac addresses.

Edit: From what I'm reading in this Reddit overall guide, it seems that we can yes use whatever mac address we want. I wonder if Nintendo's Servers will be overloaded with random Mac Addresses and they'll somehow make adjustment to the service, so new mac addresses cannot be created. I don't really see how they could, though.

I generally agree with you -- I'm more interested in the fact that it can be done, rather than actually using it heavily. It might be fun to use once or twice to SP some other NeoGaffers, but otherwise...

(Actually, it would be nice to see what the Centipede Infestation SP functionality entails, given that neither the manual nor the game explain it.)

I agree with you. However, I live in a place that's even worse for Street Passes than the US. It's a "small" city in Brazil where people don' t walk around with their 3DSes. The usual "let's gather everybody that have 3DSes and let's meet somwhere oh god puzzle pieces" gathering usually only has between 5 and 10 people.

If that's a problem in the US, can you even imagine how it is here?

I probably won't use it much (as there's an 8 hour cooldown per mac address and I don't see me leaving my other router plugged in all the time), but it's neat. If I worked at a shopping mall or a place that has a high rate of people coming and going, I'd totally set up a bootleg-ass local relay, because nobody else is going to in my country.

Edit: I recently bought a powered HUB for my Raspberry Pi, so I could, technically, buy a compatible USB Wifi Dongle, run a script in it (as it's always on) that cycles through the 10 mac addresses (as just changing the mac address triggers a new relay spot pass) so I could get all the 10 Street Passes every 8 hours, but that's more of a lazy sunday project. We'll see.

5 passes again today. That might very well be the number of relays in the town centre. But I'm not anal enough to attempt to plot my passes against the times/route.

I seemed to get about 5 from my tour as well. Returning home I got about 3 from zones I passed. A few misc ones I passed on the walk bough that up 5.

I was not testing each one and did not go into most places but a number of them have the problem of two places being next door to each other so I assume it can not connect to a given one.

Also Streetpass battle. Wasn't I supposed to get troops from kind greetings? I did so 3 times and got nothing. I might have been able to beat one of them too (if their army was lopsided).

I think you get soldiers occasionally if you don't fight them. I don't know if there are rules regarding that.

My 17k army lost to an 11k streetpass army, snapping my streak of streetpass victories at 9. I messed-up.

I wish there was a way to stockpile folks at the gate. Especially now with the new games, it can get annoying to have to play through 6 games to clear them through. Or, to be more specific, some of these games you want to play more often than others (looking at you, flower town), and it would be nice to not be forced to play them all serially.

Of course, look at me complaining, now that I'm finally getting more hits! :) #miiworldproblems

Always a fluke, that gets dumb victory streak breaks. I hate when I have a clear advantage, and yet, I mess things up!

Though lately, with 350,000 plus troops... I can plow through almost ANYTHING!!!

Question: When is the timing on critical strikes? I have accidentally activated them a few times, but can't recall how

I've had it happen when I had 1 win, 1 loss, and on the third round that I would have normally lost (less units and other army had a type advantage) which is when the critical strike occurred and made me win the round.

I just realized something today...

Many folks (myself included) are unlikely to use the "Nintendo Zone Spoofing" idea as it seems to mess with the whole "local passing" aspect of streetpass.

However, there is a way to use it that really doesn't disrupt things THAT much -- just use the MAC for a local Nintendo Zone in your area. You're only getting hits you'd be able to get "normally," without needing to trek out to that specific location.

Actually, using "real world" MAC addresses for the spoofing makes more sense anyway, as you'll be tapping into an existing source of streetpass exchanges.

Well for people like me who don't have (and never will have) a Nintendo Zone spot in my country, I would like the do the spoof thing just a couple of times to 'top-up' my StreetPass experience.

Like get the 1 or 2 extra ones I would go and get if I had a Zone to go to. I wouldn't go nuts and get like a billion hits with it because I actually really love StreePassing for real and don't mind doing them properly.

But I gotta get it working first! :P

I suppose this is off topic from the spoofing conversation, but it's been 5 days since I've last gotten a Streetpass hit, and I think it's been just over 5 days since I've started doing the time trick (moving the date forward, then back) in order to get more step coins. Could this be effecting it, or has it just been bad luck?

The last hits I got were at a McDonalds (Nintendo Wifi Zone) a day after the Streetpass Wifi system got set up. I assumed the hit was from that, but it may have just been from someone else in the store, since I've walked past that McDonalds every day since and got nothing. And I'm not in a small city.

ARRRRGH! How the heck am I supposed to get the 3rd gem of 4-3?
The Japanese wiki says: Simultaneously destroy the two big ships that appear at the end of the downward scrolling section.
But one always explodes [milliseconds] before the other. I've been using two level 3 Ensnaring Plasmas at 45°, but one ship always get more damage first (and their positions aren't constant).

Edit: and as soon as I post this, I get it. Do enough damage to one ship so it starts flashing (red), then focus on the other one until it flashes too. Now that both have received a similar amount of damage, wait until they are close enough of each other and shot them at the same time (weapons at opposite ends, inclination of 45°).

Such a shame that the Greggs or Caffe Nero aren't giving out passes. They're in such perfect positions.

Nothing today. I know it's Sunday, but it has been around 24 hours since I last walked through.

I was thinking of just setting up my router as basically a new unofficial nintendo zone. Its not really cheating, not any more than using official nintendo zones, its just putting one right next to me. There's a bus station within range of my router, and maybe people driving by would also get on it.

And in fact I hope this practice catches on because the more nintendo zones the better. It won't though.

No relay passes on the day that the O2 store and Phones4U were closed. Kinda sad that phone shops are my main source of 3DS connectivity.

I'm glad I bit the bullet and bought the bundle of new games. They're all great! Definitely worth $15, considering Mii Plaza is my most-played 3DS title. I don't know why I didn't get them sooner.

Back from Otakon. NA puzzle collection is once again complete, and managed to get three more pink pieces for the Chibi Robo puzzle on JP (for a total of four, with the Special Mii that came down last week). Army in Warrior's Way is hovering at around 1.4 million, though the berserkers just ate a good chunk from that. I'm also at around floor 21 in Mansion and I'm a master gardener with perpetual storage issues.

just had my first defeat ever at Warrior's Way... sigh I was up against Berserkers and I had almost twice the army size and I lost :/

hmm is there any way to reset the Manor? I'm officially stuck as I can't defeat the boss and none of my set pieces work (no space to put them)

In Settings (scroll all the way to the left of the Plaza main menu) there's an 'Other Options' setting where you can erase your progress from each game.
You'll start right back at the beginning though any Plaza Tickets you've earned will still be unlocked.
