So nice.

When I stopped by Toys R Us on my way to work yesterday, no sign of the illusion Chopper Purse...

All they had (that was close) was this:

Not in blue :/

That is the case my five year old has for his XL. It's a nice alternative. :-)

I played a few hours of my old 3ds this weekend an my index and middle finger hurt for about four days afterwards from holding the system and using the R trigger. Has anyone that experienced pain in their fingers tried the XL and is it any less painful?

GAME are now giving away copies of Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Heroes of Ruin or Kingdom Hearts with 3DSXL purchases.

WTF? I only bought mine two weeks ago and they're giving games away for free? I'm really pissed here.

Yeah, I notice that NES games are a tad blurry, yet the 4:3 3D Classics look sharp and pixelated, and there is a little bit of space on the top and bottom (in Kirby at least)... I don't get it, shouldn't NES VC games look sharp too, or is it just Nintendo fooling around with filters and such? :/

wow, GBA looks great, too bad only 90+% of people can't play GBA games on the 3DS
I'm sure they'll introduce them at some point, they have to unless they're playing it stupid. It covers most of the screen and doesn't look too bad for most people. Besides I'd like more GBA games from 3rd parties, GBA library is amazing. Nintendo should get cracking on that, so far the VC library is embarrassing (+ more updated 3D classics damnit!)

Then maybe it wasn't just me... Weird that they'd do that when it's the same resolution

Too bad they look like a blurry mess in motion. It's really not worth it. The ambassador gifts were poisoned :(
With games like Wario I find it worth it, the game looks too lush to play small screened, other games like Minish Cap definitely look a lot better 1:1 tho yeah

NES games don't render in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The games are stretched a little horizontally to simulate an NES being played on a real TV. It's supposed to look that way basically. The games back then were designed to be stretched like that.

The reason for the extra space on top and bottom in 3D Classics is that they're displaying in a 256x224 window at the game's original 1:1 resolution. But in the VC emulator, they actually display an extra 8 pixels on the top and an extra 8 pixels on the bottom that were cut off on the original NES versions, bringing the vertical resolution from 224 to 240 to match the 3DS screen.

You can confirm this by looking up some screens from Mario and Zelda, where, for example, in Super Mario Bros on NES, you could only see 1 and a half tiles of brick at ground level, but on VC you see 2 entire tile levels, and the score text has 8 pixels of extra sky above it. Similarly in Zelda, screens with bushes along the bottom only showed the top half of the bushes on the NES, while they show the full bushes on VC.

As said above, the blur comes from horizontal stretching to correct the aspect ratio so that games don't look horizontally squished compared to playing them on an NES. Personally this is one case where I would prefer to have the option of 1:1 pixel ratio and lose the original aspect ratio, since it's really not different enough to notice the "squish" but the blur is certainly noticeable.

Got my OG 3DS back from repair today, scratch-free, baby!

They shipped it with a white foamy package material in between screens. Planning on keeping that between there from now on.

So good to have it back. Now we can have one last week together. =)

They do, the vertical resolution of most NES games just happens to be the same as the 3DS', so NES games can actually only be played in 1:1.

The NES had a resolution of 256x240, so they run at 1:1 vertically. However, the NES (and the SNES) didn't produce actual 4:3 images so the image has to be scaled horizontally by 25% to look correct.

To put it short: it's impossible to display NES and SNES games at 1:1 on an LCD with square pixels without some horizontal distortion.

I thought I noticed some blurring! I had heard that NES games were supposedly 1:1, so I had convinced myself otherwise.

just pre-ordered mine from lockerz. went with red.

all i really play is mario kart online.

gonna trade in my regular 3ds for $88 at amazon, not really into trading in stuff but might as well, don't really need two 3ds and that price seems fair to me for not alot of hassle to trade it. hopefully it doesn't drop too much.

pretty excited :3 the pics posts in here have been awesome.

Recently been reminded of this website, was about to go through with the pre-order when it wanted me to process through paypal. Doesn't that mean that they will charge immediately? Or have you not been charged at all?

Is lockerz reliable? They ship to Australia and are reasonably priced. I'm thinking of cancelling my pre-order with Play-asia, so I can save $150 odd dollars. I've just never heard of this site before. Any help would be much appreciated!

I just saw that. It's an incredibly good deal, and it's unfortunate that many people probably missed it.

That's a fine game selection. If there's anyone who's looking to buy, I think this is the best deal yet.

Man that is a good deal. Hopefully they will have a similar deal here in the U.S. (especially since I am planning on getting New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kid Icarus with my XL).

Great game selection for UK peeps, KH is brand new and Nintendo first part games don't drop in price (at least in the US they never do, NSMB/MK/M&L:BIS all still full price). Too bad for those who already bought the system though

Damnit Amazon UK, the Hori 3DS XL screen protectors just got delayed to the 16th august instead of the 10th :(((

Can't play unless i install those (won't)

Just received the same protectors from PlayAsia (took about 9 days to ship the to the Netherlands ). Great quality. You can't tell they're on the 3DS. One small airbubble on the touchscreen aside ( a tiny hair on the screen I guess ) they're a great fit and easy to apply. Once the 3DS is turned on, you don't see the bubble so it doesn't bother me. At least I'm very relieved knowing that the screens won't get scrathed now. Hori delivers.

Actually there have been arguments made that protectors could potentially exacerbate the issue.

i've been charged/pending, but i remember reading something like it'll stay a "pending" charge till it ships, whatever that means, either way my balance says my balance-$168. it was $168 /w the points discount, hella good price and it comes out in a week or so anyways. too bad it's really hard to earn the "points" there now to get a good discount for stuff in the future, luckily i had some stocked up. never ordered from them before but alot of ppl ordered a vita from them and were happy with it.

So does this version of the 3DS have the problem of the top screen getting scratched by the bottom half of the system when closed?
Some have the problem, some don't. Seems to be a crapshoot if it scratches or not

Keeping it out of tight spaces (pockets) would be a wise thing to do

Damn. £175 for big screen 3D online Mario Kart?

If you don't own a 3DS yet that is one super deal. For Mario Kart online it's worth the price of entry.

Nintendogs, Pilotwings, Steel Diver, etc.

So what's the deal with the 3D on the Xl? Worse, better, or the same as the original? I asked earlier and one person replied saying that it was worse, only to tell me it was the same a few hours later. What's the general consensus from XL owners in Europe/Japan?

Easier on the eyes, deeper due to the size. Overall better.

Just spent a few precious minutes with the silver model. Beautiful.

Love my silver unit, I find it way better than red/blue.

it was hard at first while looking for a sweet spot. Once found, it's same/better than the original for me

second that. No scratches here. It didn't happen with the original 3DS either

The fact that it didn't happen with your first must mean you didn't take it out and about very often?
Even in my man-purse moving around as I walk was enough.
